You come home tomorrow to find 2 dudes stealing your stuff. They have big sacks full of your valuables and are carrying your TV out.

Before you could spell your name your dog goes ape and attacks one of them. The second runs off in fear, dropping your TV in the process.

Then you discover your dog went right for the face/throat of the thief and ripped out a chunk of flesh. The thief is dead on your floor in a pool of blood.

Inverse to cat or other pet if you don't have a dog.

How would you react?
What do you do?

In honest response, I wouldnt feel bad for the burglar, but Id be worried that my dog is capable of such an act. For my own safety and my family's I would put it down.

Why am I spelling my name? At least my dog's reaction has something to do with what's going on.

Honestly, I think I'm gonna put the dog in charge of my finances, since he's clearly the brains of the family.

The cat I had was a massive coward... soooooo many levels of shock going on.

So after giving him a yummy treat for defending the house, I'd probably have to neatly store the dead body until I can discreetly dump it, and make sure the blood doesn't stain my floors... nobody would ever believe the cat could have done what he did, so I'd have to do the damage control.

After all, as the saying goes - a good friend will help you move, but a true friend will help you move a body.

I live in a state where as long as it wasn't a cop they're at their own risk on break-ins. So I'm not fussed.

Would be confused how an 8 pound socially anxious cat managed to get at somebody that way though

Part of having a large dog is security.

I have a huge chocolate lab who is very intimidating and protective when it comes to my wife and it helps me sleep knowing hes there to protect her when Im not. (I travel a lot for work).

Also pretty sure one of our two cats would do some wicked damage in the event of a break in.

I feel zero sympathy for anyone who breaks into a private home and catches teeth. You get what you deserve.

Not a situation I have to worry about for multiple reasons. I don't have a dog or any other pet. Tomorrow is a Wednesday, and I'm not scheduled for work, so I have no reason to leave the house, and thus at no point will I be returning home. Any thief smart enough to know what my valuables are (mostly comic books) would be smart enough to not put them in a sack where they'd likely get damaged, and thus be worth less. Even if I did leave and return for whatever reason, if they are carrying my TV out, that means they are coming out the door I'm going in, so they'd have to get by me.

  1. Wonder where I got a dog or other pet from.
  2. Wonder where exactly they robbers were carrying my TV to. I live on an island and the only way on or off is via passenger ferry, and it's a long walk from my home even without carrying a massive TV.
  3. Wonder why I was away from home in the first place. I work from home and don't have anywhere to be on Wednesdays, so I would have no reason to be out of the house.

Honestly, this whole situation creates far more questions than answers.

I would be horrified, as I dont want to see anyone lose their lives.

Butthat is how I keep my house safe. Instead of guns, I have two huge and highly territorial German Shepards. They are incredibly sweet and loving dogs, absolutely devoted to protecting the family. One cracked one of our front windows at our last house because he saw my son getting into a car with a friend who he didnt recognize and wouldnt stop throwing himself against a window trying to get out there. When we are at the dog park, they are always placing themselves between our kids and anyone that comes in. And just the other day our property cameras caught a poor salesperson running away because they rang the bell and both dogs started throwing themselves against the door. I didnt even train them to be guard dogs, we just adopted them and they have been relentlessly protective ever since.

I know dogs arent for everyone and again: my dogs have never actually hurt anyone in the years we have had them and I would be devastated if they did. But not going to lie-I sleep a like a baby each night knowing those two awesome knuckleheads are on patrol.
