In comparison with a lot of Final Fantasy games, I feel like 8 is the one that would benefit the most from some Remake style changes. I think it had some great ideas and some really intriguing narrative plot elements that were not followed very well. I think it was maybe a bit more ambitious than what Square could pull off at the time. Combine that with the fact the narrative itself has a LOT of opportunities to do the whole, "alternate universe/alternate timeline" type shenanigans, it just makes the most sense to me.

It has some fundamental flaws that could be addressed with its combat engine on top of that.

I really badly want to see a 2025 version of FF8, taking what worked from the original and changing what didn't!

FF8 has so many areas that it would also be impossible to recreate in just one game with the same high fidelity graphics as remake. Guess we gotta wait and see what they're cooking with the ff9 remake to see if its financially viable with 8.

I wonder how much they would change the junction/draw system. No way they would leave it as esoteric and busted as it was.

I don't trust SE at all after the 7 remake. Rather than a thoughtful rewrite of the original story, it felt like they were just giving us (mostly) the same story but with extra tangents crammed in-between the original set pieces to fuck up the pacing.

That said FF8 does have a lot of potential to be really good with a modern remake. But it would require them to actually re-do the script from the ground up and fix its shortcomings, rather than just adding a bunch of side-quests and missions in-between the stuff that was already there.

That asshole with the cowboy gimmick was annoying at first, then almost became an interesting character during the assassination plot, then was promptly ignored for the rest of the game, for instance. >_>

FF8 needs lots of rewrites before any remake. Same with Chrono Cross.

I watched a video recently which went into detail on a lot of cut content from 8.

I wish we could get the Laguna story fully told. Those were some of my favourite parts of that game. Laguna, Kiros and Ward need more time in the spotlight!

If they do a remake, they should add the cut stuff so the flashbacks make more sense in the long run.

Weirdly enough for what they did to FF7, 8 would've legitimately been a better choice for the kind of story changes they did.

The whole game should look like the cutscenes
