The voice acting is also really charming in the Souls games, but I think the acting in LOP is fine. I get wanting a more theatrical voice dialect though. That much we can agree on
i am incredibly picky when it comes to voicework. i have a lot of appreciation for the craft and for one reason or another, i have a very keen yet disagreeable ear when it comes to voice work, even in other languages

i will say this, the voice work in lies of p definitely sounds on par with most of the rest of video games, fwiw. that level just happens to not meet my standards is all

These are what I think of as Soulslike:

Risk and reward gameplay (punishment for failure)

Methodical combat

Difficult gameplay (but fair with player control)

Impressive bosses

Character customization

Foreboding/ dying/ etc world

Lore based storytelling

I don't think every aspect is required but the more there is, the more Soulslike it is. And yeah, Lies of P has more direct storytelling but otherwise fits the bill IMO.

But the reason I think Remnant doesn't count is that it lacks my first 2 criteria.

Dude, I am obsessed about a lot of things, so if it is a dig, then I am being very harsh on myself.

i get that you might not mean it as one, but we dont get to decide how other people take our words. that word to me strikes a negative chord, and souls games are one of the very few things in this life of mine that im passionate about - i think to call it an obsession is a disservice

i won't argue tho just providing why i said that.

That's fair, but know that I didn't mean it that way. I am sorry if hurtful.

On the other hand, many gamers feel the same about the word casual, and you throw it out there with a "no offense" as well.

casual doesnt have a typically negative connotation in the way that obsessed does, i think that much is obvious. if someone asked me to refer to their comparably passing interest in a different way tho, i would gladly oblige them without arguing

Casual does have a negative connotation with many gamers. All I am saying is that if you get upset about someone using a word that you don't like, even when not meant negatively, you need to accept the same.

For me, I am passionate about games in general, so I won't typically replay the same ones over and over. You are using the word casual different than most. I don't know what the right word is.

Casual is not a bad thing for normal people. Only chronically online Gamers that get tell you yeah but you used summons tho when you beat Elden Ring use it as an insult.

Mario and Zelda are two of the most popular and top tier series in the world, and they are incredibly casual.

this i do not believe. i think you are focusing on a sweaty few, whereas the gaming industry by and large creates for and caters to casual gamers

That is certainly possible that I mainly hear it in negative situations from shitty people. To be clear, I don't take offense, I only know that some do.

I understand what you mean. People who aren't trying to experience and master every element of a game. I usually have no interest in doing that.

like i do stupid shit like this, bc i want to rush a particular weapon

this is like, a lvl 35 ludwig fight with no runes and a +5 kirkhammer im not specced for

https://vimeo.com/858508046?share=copy

no other game motivates me to do stuff like this. that's what i mean by "more casual"
Sounds like one of my runs. I wanted to use the Bloodletter most of the run so ran straight to the DLC. After getting it, I kind of dropped the run once I realized I already did the hardest stuff (Ludwig and Maria at a low level without a fully upgraded weapon).

No, can't stand them. I'm old school and prefer the old style of hack'n'slash games. Stuff like Heavenly Sword, Blades of Time, Genji: Dawn of the Samurai, the Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors series, Way of the Samurai. Too bad you don't get any games like that anymore.

I played Nioh and managed to beat it, but probably would never have finished it if it wasn't for the ability to summon other players to help you out.

Lords of the Fallen I started but quickly got bored of and thought it was awful.

The Surge I was interested in, but when I played the trial and realised the kind of game it was I quickly lost interest.

No one else has mentioned Sifu but I would put it in a similar category. Fantastic combat but the bosses are ridiculously hard and take hours of trial and error to beat. I never did finish the game because I couldn't even get close to finishing the last boss.

sifu is a near perfect game but i have no clue why some ppl echo this sentiment. totally diff genre to me. ig for some ppl all it takes is hard bosses, which, fair, its ur criteria

unforgiving combat and ultra-hard bosses are really the only criteria I think of when someone is talking about "soulslike" games.

I mean all the other RPG elements can be found in non-soulslike games.

souls is really forgiving, the unforgiving part is just the rep that sweatlords have perpetuated it having

world, writing, ambiance, "vibes" all need to go hand in hand with the combat for me

I typically avoid the genre but I've been getting more into the non-Fromsoft one's. I've LOVED Fromsoft games for a while now(first one was Armored Core IV, but I didn't become a fan till Dark Souls 1), but a lot of the copycats didn't look too good so aside from Nioh 1 and 2 I didn't try any until Lies of P this year. I plan to try Thymesia and Code Vein at some point.

Salt & Sanctuary was pretty meh for me, and is actually the reason I avoided non-Fromsoft Souls games for so long.

Souls didn't invent or popularize difficulty. Soulslikes have similar gameplay elements/structure(bonfires, fog walls, stamina, the level system) that you'd find in the actual Fromsoft titles.

Sure. Ancient City is cool if you can stomach the slow controls, but the atmosphere is pretty great

Came to say this. I played it years ago but it was shocking how much of a dark souls feel it has to it aside from the clunky controls
