multiple options in some cases, where you can resolve things through dialogue

no random encounters

there's more to combat than just scrolling through a menu - distance, barriers, environment, etc. have some kind of an effect

Overworld/world map
Final Fantasy X is solid proof that this isn't necessary. Unless you count the airship as a world map, but I'd say it's more just a primitive fast travel.

challenge and variety, usually. i don't really have a battle system preference, but if the game's too easy and mindless i just don't care to finish most of the time

Any kind of manual movement or placement. I know that veers closer to turn-based strategy/strategy RPG, but it's an automatic pass if it has that.

And no random battles isn't a deal-breaker, but I tend to always enjoy ones where you can see the enemies more than ones where the encounters are random (Grandia, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and Lunar are all great).

Not even just FFX, CRPGs had been doing "no worldmap/overworld" for years prior to JRPGs being a thing. Needing an overworld is just an extremely reductive take on what an RPG is.
