I just wanted to show the breakdown of where Pokemon makes its money, according to Wikipedia:
  • Licensed merchandise $91.6 billion
  • Mobile games $6.13 billion
  • Box office $1.156 billion
  • Jet aircraft livery sales $3 million
I like both how it doesn't separately list non-mobile video games, and how jet aircraft livery sales gets its own category, and how that category is so tiny.

I'd ask what your favorite is, but we all know it's Pokemon

How did you know?

I never really cared for all the others except Star Wars. But, Star Wars has the same problem for me as Final Fantasy where I've experienced such a small part of it (and none of it recent) that it would feel weird to call myself a fan.

I found your source, but don't understand the criteria.

It lists Barbie as 33.9B, citing merch, video, and box office. But then Lego is only listed as 2B, only citing video game sales. Why doesn't Lego get credit for merch?

I would have guessed, like, Hello Kitty in its place.

It's a Japanese childrens' character that's existed since the 60's that's been a mainstay in childrens' merch strictly in Japan, Winnie the Pooh would be the closest comparison here I guess. It's kind of amazing that it's by far the highest grossing franchise on here that isn't an international phenomenon, we really take for granted just how good Japan is at capitalism

I'm pretty sure that by this list's standards, Legos the toy doesn't count as a "media franchise" - it's ONLY counting video games (and movies? or is it JUST the games?) that are Lego-branded, as a media franchise. I guess for some reason that doesn't hold true for Barbie though, which I think is including sales of the dolls

Hah I'm the first person to vote for Mickey & friends. More because I'm not super wild about any of the other franchises than immense enthusiasm. It would either have been that or Pokemon, but my entire interest in Pokemon is the OG 151 - I would struggle to name 10 after that.

I can kind of understand the logic behind regular Legos not being included. I'm sure there's some more academic, semiotics-ass way to explain it, but are they really "media" in the same way as Barbie? A Barbie doll is a representation/portrayal of a human female, her Dream House is a representation of a house, etc. Legos ARE Legos. There's nothing being portrayed or communicated. I mean, obviously there are exceptions, but there's probably no easy way to tease all of that out of the overall sales numbers.

Just nothing going on there. I'd legit be more hyped for a Barbie movie sequel than anything Star Wars could present which means I'd vote Barbie over it too.

I don't give any more of a crap about Pokemon as I do most of the rest of this list. Really, none of these move the needle for me much any more. Once upon a time I might have cared more about Star Wars. Some of the MCU was entertaining, but I was never really a fan. As a kid, I had a few things with Mickey or Winnie on them. That's about the extent of it. I guess the fact that I still have my copy of gen 1 means that I own more of Pokemon than I do anything else on the list, weirdly, but that's only because I gave away the HP books I owned the last time I moved.

I unironically think there's enough material left over for a sequel. At least one.

On a side note, I'm wary of the fact the first Star Wars movie released this decade will be a Mandalorian one, given how relatively unpopular Season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett were. Oh, I trudged through Boba Fett. I enjoyed Morrison's performance but other than that and the production values carried over from The Mandalorian I don't think there was much to really recommend. I quit Season 3 after two episodes because it just seemed like same old same old.

On the wikipedia page it is lower than this but it delibarately ignores the box office numbers for it for some reason. It would be second to Pokemon otherwise.

It's really hard to actually gather the data to really determine how big these things are anyway, there's so much to keep track of, a lot of which isn't well known, and there's questions of definitions and such etc etc. The only thing I feel pretty confident about is that Pokemon is #1
