Yup, i googled it, there are like 70 years old who still have these dreams. Mine was always stressful, almost a nightmare. Did school really subconsciously traumatize people this much?

Oh it's very common.
I even had a year where most of my dream was back to highschool despite already being a college student.

Probably related to the stress and wanting to return to those fun days.

Pretty much the only recurring dream I could temper for years is where, due to some clerical error, my entire graduating class had to repeat their senior year even though we were all adults.

I had that dream for like a decade.

Yep, have this dream often.

I'll also have dreams where I get back to school after being away, due to being sick or something, and I've just... Forgotten everything. I don't know my locker combination, I don't know the order of my classes or how to get to them, etc.

I had a dream last week I was starting my senior year again, only now my school was a boarding school and I got the room I would be staying in (it was more of an apartment really).

I have this one, except it's just me. I basically get a call from someone in the government saying they were reviewing my records and I missed a mandatory high school course and now have to go back and repeat a year and my engineering degree is invalid until I do.

I also have a variant of the one in the OP. My university's registration system was horrible and you had to cross-reference a bunch of different documents to figure out what classes to take. I have a recurring nightmare where it's exam week, I look at my registered courses online to double check the final exam date/time, only to see a course name on there I don't recognize. Then I realize that I registered for a course at the start of the semester, forgot about it, and now the final is in a couple of days and I have never even seen the material. I also follow the exact same thought process after waking up: "Oh, thank fuck, it's not exam week, I can spend some time studying tomorrow and make sure I know the material. Wait... what course? Didn't I graduate decades ago?"

Oh, and there's a similar one that I have which, for some reason, I only started having in the last couple of years. I'm back in high school, but I keep sleeping in and missing classes, or else skipping them (which, notably, I literally never did during high school), and I find myself consumed with this dread as I realize I'm slipping farther and farther behind, missing more assignments and screwing myself for the final.

How are these dreams so common?

The weirdest version I've gotten was where I had to repeat the third grade because of some technicality. So I'm just this grown ass man in a class full of eight year olds or whatever coloring in butterflies or some shit.

the dreams are common b/c we run our schools like prisons and capitalist hellholes, instead of the hippie-dippie free form, no requirements, institutions where everyone is free to pursue their own research interests that they should be.

have schools anywhere ever had no requirements and free form subjects tho?

Our school system is wack but every institution has to have some baseline to work off of

I have them too. Most of the time they are overall fine but sometimes I'll wake up suddenly confused worrying about some homework I didn't do. It'll take me a moment to realize I haven't been in school for a very freaking long time and what am I worrying about.

I don't think children are ready to be treated like corporate slaves with full time jobs, which is basically what modern school prepares us to be. Being thrown in with a bunch of other kids who can be assholes with basically no protection from harassment even if you tell someone.

I still have dreams I'm in elementary school once in a while. Usually without shoes on for some reason and I don't know what class I'm supposed to be in.

I haven't had one of these for a while especially as I've gotten deeper into my job, but in the year after graduating college (2023), I had a recurring dream where I realize that I basically forgot one of my classes and now I'm guaranteed to fail it. Like I hadn't gone for most of the semester.

Part of why it's such a stupid dream is that after COVID they let you withdraw from classes up to the end of the semester so it literally couldn't matter in the time I was in college >_>

plato's actual academy (closed by a christian emperor)
Pythagoras's commune
non-profit research institutions, etc.
star trek

no they really don't have to have baselines. degrees can be awarded if you complete certain requirements like publishing peer-review articles in a field or passing comprehensive exams.

you could have both systems also

we could literally do anything, but our schools are run to make money.

if we were interested in nurturing ourselves and humanity we'd supply UBI and then fund public universities where anyone could go to study. you could still have teachers and stuff, but you wouldn't have much of the bureaucracy.

i mean, really, how many people want to be in college? just let those people do that, and let them continue to peer review each other's research.

they already do it without getting paid

k-12 is straight up prison, but less yard time. do you really think that wasn't traumatizing?

it's brainwashes people into accepting servitude.

*Britney Spears - WorkBitch is playing*

to be clear I don't think colleges are prison or traumatize people in the same way at all. they are plagued by economic forces and special interests, and so is everything else. in terms of human institutions, throughout all of time even, our current university and college system is one of humanities greatest accomplishments--but that doesn't mean they couldn't be better

and they are absolutely under attack. just a normal day in 2024.

edit: grad school definitely does fuck ppl up. they call it permanent head damage for a reason. most of the time, you're barely surviving in a high-stakes environment for years.

Maybe it's weird that it's incredibly rare for me to dream about school or university. Every couple of years I might dream about some of the people there, but even then it's not usually in a school-related situation (the last one I can recall we were building a mountain bike track together).

dawg you did not just list star trek and 2 literal ancient scholars in an argument about freeform educational institutions. To teach children skills they MUST have to succeed in the modern world there needs to be a baseline, end of story.

College is already way less structured compared to K-12, and thats by design. Anything before that absolutely needs heavy structure though.

I graduated HS in 2001, but all these years I keep dreaming that I am still in school. The odd thing is I'm always my current actual age. So I just keep getting older and older but I'm always back in senior year, which I keep repeating endlessly all my life. Doomed to never graduate. I'm 43 now so I always feel very awkward sitting class with a bunch of teenagers

This is why it's more akin to a nightmare for me. Even worse when I'm back in high school, but nobody I know is still there.

I don't really have school dreams but I still have dreams of the house I grew up in (age 4-18) which is kind of weird because I haven't lived there in over 20 years.

Anytime I have a dream where I'm at "home" it's always that house even though I've never even lived there as an adult.
