I am getting my oil changed and went for a walk while that was happening. And I did two miles. I was all proud since my feet have been hurting I have not been able to walk like that when I use to do half marathons. But anywho did two miles and only wasted 241 calories . Like I know running and HIIT two miles will be better. Just talking about walking. Should have walked to the gym and lifted

Walking sucks, you gotta do it multiple times daily to see results as well as stay committed to a strict diet.

for me, its not really worth that kinda lifestyle change

Running 2 miles is similar in terms of calories burned if I recall correctly.
Running/walking for calorie loss is generally not that "efficient". It's why diet end up mattering much more.

Keep in mind the calories burnt during exercises like walking are in addendum to calories burned in a neutral state. You didn't *only* burn 241 calories that day. You burned 241 *more* calories.

I do about five miles a day.

I dunno, no way in hell am I running so

Bicycling is ok but it's not safe to do after dark and that's the only time there's time for it.

I actually very strongly disagree. Walking is maybe one of the most underrated tools for exercise, for several reasons:

  • it's extremely low fatiguing and low risk of injury, perhaps the lowest of any form of cardio outside of an elliptical or swimming
  • Unlike either of those though you can walk anywhere, and you can insert it into your daily routine. Walk to work, walk at lunch, walk to the gym
  • Because we're such practised and efficient walkers you can walk while you're on the phone, listening to a podcast, etc.
  • Because of all of this you can get in your low intensity cardio without disrupting your training or life routine
You could certainly burn more calories in less time if you ran or did some form of HIIT, but with the barest amount of conditioning you could get to a place where you could walk for hours and hours with little to no problem. The upward trend of calorie burning is basically endless with walking, because the fatigue always remains incredibly low.

Great take and info here. 1x or 2x a week I go on a really long walk. It's a great supplement for my gym work.

Walking is great for general wellbeing and activity. I enjoy walking listening to audio books.

But no, it's not a workout. Still does you good though, enjoy it for what it is.

241 calories is a good number to burn for that amount of work. If you did that every day, you'd burn 1687 calories a week. That's nearly half a pound of fat.

It helps a lot for cardiovascular health to keep your heart rate up for periods of time, walking is great for that. There's a reason athletes do cardio and strength training. You gotta do more than just lift, if you want to be fit.

It's not ideal if walking is your only cardio but it definitely helps in conjunction with other things.

Plus calorie loss is only part of it, may not be great for fat-burning but it's helpful for other things like balance.

Spent about a year with a cane due to injury and part of my physical therapy had to include strengthening accessory muscles that had atrophied from the change in my gait. Couldn't balance on one leg at all because the muscles in my ankles couldn't keep me upright anymore.

Ultimately when it comes to cardio, the thing you enjoy is always the right answer. Marginal difference in calorie burning or fatigue are secondary to "I actually want to do this and will keep it up".

The net difference is what matters, not the way something feels in an individual session. All this shit takes a ton of time whichever way you swing it. Do the thing you're happy to do every week forever.

walking is basically the only sort of "workout" I ever do, mostly because it's a side-effect of doing other things. Could drive or bus to the store? Nah I'll just walk

and then over time the more you walk the more able to become to just walk to further places without getting super tired, it's like self-perpetuating and useful all the time

Walking is great. I walk around 25000 to 30000 steps a day at my job. Sucks for bulking up though because I have to eat 3500 to 4000 calories to hit my bulk needs.

Walking is great. Especially if you go off in one direction, because you have to walk back home, meaning you can't just quit.

And 240 calories is a massive amount of extra calories burned.
If you had a neutral intake/outtake of calories and added that 240 per day, that would add up to 1,680 calories a week, or 6,720 a month, meaning you burned over 2 pounds of fat a month. Not too shabby for just walking, not changing diet.

I've been walking (and later jogging) every day on a treadmill since 2019.

Walking 3.0 mph with 11.5% incline (6.56 angle) for 1/2 mile burns 76 kcal for me.
Walking 3.6 mph with 10% incline (5.71 angle) for 1/2 mile burns 67 kcal for me.
Jogging 5.6 mph with 1% incline (0.57 angle) for 1/2 mile burns 50 kcal for me.

Walking with an incline wins by far, but jogging is much more fun.

Running a mile burns me about 130 calories and walking is about 100, plus I can do twice as many running miles in the same time.

Running is one of the most efficient ways to burn calories, especially if going many miles. I burned almost 1500 calories yesterday running 11 miles. And that is about 150 calories per 10 minutes.

Walking is a great foundation for eventually doing heavier cardio. It may not feel like much, but as you get more acclimated to walking longer distances your legs do get stronger, as does your cardiovascular health.

It is absolutely not useless exercise, you just need to do more of it if its your primary form of cardio

Also, walking is far from useless. Let's say you make a habit of walking just 2 miles a day, which can also be a good time to relax, destress, listen to music, etc

2 miles = 200 calories

200 * 365 days = 73,000

73,000 / 3500 (calories in a pound) = 21 pounds a year

It isn't ideal on its own. But there is no question that running (or other high intensity cardio) sheds a ton of calories if you do at least 30 minutes. Also, lifting helps transform the body and muscle burns calories.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I do know that it isn't perfect at all. But yet they still recommend a 500 calorie deficit a day if pushing for losing a pound a week or a 1000 calorie deficit a day if pushing for 2 a week. So, math...

This isn't meant to be snarky toward you but more toward the experts where they claim something is wrong, don't offer an exact alternative, but then give a general guideline that supports what they negated.

Walking is a fantastic tool. You're improving insulin sensitivity and keeping your metabolic rate high. It's more about the calories burned throughout the day than the action itself.

Calculating calories burned is actually very fruitless. Even going on a run will burn surprisingly few calories during the action itself.
