Victim blaming on natural disasters always was the weirdest twist. We call them literally acts of God, hard to be a bigger victim when you're up against acts beyond human control or understanding.

I was able to eat and hand out food and water to thousands of people because my workplace dominos set up a generator so I reported for work and we gave out tons of free pizza.

Like, even if they've lived right in the heart of hurricane country for years, if your reaction to their suffering is "lol just move" you're seriously lacking in empathy.

That's dumb and basically climate denial. It's random but we do have models for it, and the whole insurance industry runs on it. What we don't understand is just how quickly the climate is changing. The models weren't designed to be updated multiple times a year like this. Eventually we'll have the models and the computation to predict danger much better.

Then it's a classic political problem. Dangerous areas will be abandoned, safe areas will be overwhelmed. We understand those problems very well too, but like the climate problem, we aren't willing to do what's necessary to handle it.

Said insurance industry is just now beginning to crack as several areas become in their view completely uninsurable. We've seen this in areas of California where our fire season which used to last 2-3 months is now year round.

A lot of policies run on the idea that these events are going to be scarce and impact small areas. When you start seeing catastrophic damage over large areas repeatedly over small periods of time, the concept of insurance doesn't work.

gotta remember that this is talking about people victim blaming.

if you're firmly in the "climate change ruining everything" camp then victim blaming doesn't make sense because you're aware that models aren't accurate anymore and that people can't be at fault for major shifts to the way they live their lives. i don't think anyone in this camp is going to be a dick like this.

but if you aren't fully there, especially if you don't believe climate change is a big deal, you probably fall more under the 'act of god' camp (which, if you talk insurance, is something they don't cover explicitly as 'act of god' provisions). at which point, it's literally god, wouldn't make sense to victim blame here. weirdly some would despite that, it's just never processed. that's why i said this is the weirdest twist: it's like you identify that the person can't be at fault because it's something literally at the level of a divine being's actions, yet blame them anyway.

It does though, like you said it becomes uninsurable. That is the destiny of a huge portion of Earth.

Jesus christ, if I wanted to see this sort of post, I'd be asking to be let back into Current Events.

hey, if it bothers you, just go move to Mars where you don't have to deal with the largest humanitarian crisis we are and will face in our entire history.

Our planet is fucked and will only get more fucked as the climate crisis hasn't been addressed and likely will not be able to be.

Death toll has now climbed to over forty. People still need life-saving medicine like insulin desperately. I have still seen no government or national guard response like we were promised on the radio. Supposedly were getting air drops but I havent seen it. Random rednecks with backhos and bobcats are fixing the roads, places like Dominos and independent food trucks are keeping people fed and hydrated.

In all of North Carolina, but there are still hundreds missing.

EDIT: Actually I was wrong, the death toll is up to 57 now, and that is just in my area. No account on how many North Carolina wide.

My power is back on, but no water or internet still. The water line mains were washed away completely and so were the roads leading to them so they have to repair the road before they can even attempt to restore power, and we all know how long it takes them to repair the road. Generous estimate is a month for water. I just hope they dont forget about us like Flint. They are saying the water and mud is basically radioactive so stay away from it outside. Death toll is now over one hundred in my area alone, hope fading for finding people, and over 200 in the state. Two acquaintances of mine, a little old man regular customer of mine and this woman Ive spoken to several times at the comic book store, among them. My partner is still hoping for information on a missing friend of theirs. My partners Grandmother lost her home and her pets and basically everything she ever had to the flood. Hospitals are asking citizens to stop helping with the debris, trees and roads as the hospital admitted 33 new chainsaw related injuries yesterday and that isnt helping. This organization that works with mules delivered a ton of supplies Wednesday into our area including things like insulin. I have a comfortable amount of supplies at the moment and Ive seen people giving out supplies on every corner now, the community really coming together. Ive heard far more nice stories than looting lately. Well keep hoping for the best.

Yeah, I live just northwest of Woodfin and southwest of Weaverville. It's been brutal without electricity and water for a whole week. We should be getting those back in the next couple days. I've heard the worst part is Asheville itself, especially near the Biltmore area and the water plant there is completely ******.

Ahh man, just gotta love those people who want to be of help but end up making things worse.

Glad you're hanging in there, and nice to hear about the community coming together and working to get through this. Some lifelong bonds could be formed from this tragedy at least.
