Next up: one of the most oddball nominations. Yes, even odder than Clippy! - 65. Bob Bell (Sam & Max series) @Prince46 https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/2/2d4d6bf2.jpg The Computer Obsolescence Prevention Society (C.O.P.S.). From left: Bob Bell, Bluster Blaster, Curt 286, and Chippy. Bob Bell is one of the members of the C.O.P.S., the Computer Obsolescence Prevention Society. Modeled after an automated telephone, Bob works with the other members an arcade machine, an ancient personal computer, and a Pong home game console to attempt to maintain their self-worth and relevance in society. Bob speaks like an old telephone helpline. I watched the relevant scenes in episodes 5 and 6 of Sam & Max Save the World and read the C.O.P.S. article on the Sam & Max Wiki. I did not watch later appearances of the C.O.P.S. in subsequent Sam & Max games because I assumed I would get the gist of what the characters were about from Save the World. (Also, this material really isnt my kind of humor, so I didnt want to watch more than I needed to.) That said, Bob is a unique nomination in that hes very much a side character whos also part of a group of side characters, and his actions arent inherently friendly or unfriendly. I appreciate the out-of-the-box nomination! Activity: 8.5. Shockingly high for an old telephone that doesnt seem to have mobility! Bob, along with the other C.O.P.S., maintains Reality 2.0, a fantastical video game-based overlay of normal reality. Future appearances show him on the moon, operating a car shop, and even functioning inside an actual car, helping Sam and Max on their missions. Bob specifically operates as, well, a phone inside the car. The C.O.P.S. are constantly down about how the rest of the world looks at them as obsolete, but Bob does plenty of really cool things! Backup: 4. Tough to judge this one. Bob would presumably be there for his fellow C.O.P.S. members, but given how most of their time together is sort of spent talking and not taking action, its hard to say. He isnt even especially supportive of them verbally they all agree with each other about things, but theyre all pretty stoic characters who dont need a lot of comforting. Bob does strike me as somebody more concerned with himself than with others, though since thats more extrapolation and less in-game evidence, I cant fault him too much for it. Conversation: 1. This is where Bob really suffers. Hes modeled after a speakerphone helpline. While hes certainly capable of conversing, a lot of his responses are framed like if you want this thing, press 1 and other such stock phrases. That would get very old, very fast. He seems to not have any issues communicating in the actual game, but likecome on. Would you really want to have a conversation with this guy? Demeanor: 3.5. Kind of a one-note personality. In the clips I watched, he doesnt really change his tone the entire time. Hes like a placid motivational speaker, or a Zoloft commercial. Granted, thats good for consistencys sake like, would you rather want to be friends with someone whos boring all the time or someone who has extreme highs but also extreme lows? Bob is definitely the former. Sometimes you want that consistency, even if its not the most interesting thing in the world. Effort: 6. Bob is willing to go to extreme lengths to make sure he and his friends are taken care of. Though they seem ignorant of the true purpose of Reality 2.0, they still are responsible for maintaining aspects of it, which would seemingly go beyond their electronic parameters. And he takes up other software projects, even going back into intended usage as a (car) phone. All of this is good hustle, but would Bob be willing to do things that, say, a hypothetical non-C.O.P.S. friend would want to do? Id like to think hed at least consider it, but maybe wouldnt be too enthusiastic about it. Total Score: 46. Fun nom! ... Copied to Clipboard!

64. Homura Akemi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) bea https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/3/390d160c.jpg Homura is a seemingly ordinary middle school student. However, she, along with her only friend Madoka Kaname, is a Magical Girl who fights demonic entities. Homuras abilities are time-based. As per the nominators request, I only familiarized myself with episode 10, I Wont Rely on Anyone Anymore, which is a spotlight episode for Homura. I also read over her page on the Madoka Wiki. Beware of spoilers. Activity: 1. Yeesh, superheroes have it rough in this world. Homura and the other Magical Girls make pacts with Kyubey, a cat-like familiar, essentially selling their souls for wishes. Theyre forced to battle horrible monstrosities to the death and even run the risk of becoming monstrosities themselves. Homura is only a Magical Girl herself because, in her original timeline (see below), she witnessed Madoka, her only friend from school, transform and die. When Kyubey appeared to her to request a contract, she said shed give her soul to him in exchange for the ability to rewind time, and she spends the rest of her time attempting to reset the timeline to save Madoka. In that span of time she watches the other Girls die horrible deaths, fights evil beings, and barely holds it together emotionally. Its a pretty crapsack existence, all things considered. Backup: 10. So Homura willingly becomes a Magical Girl after seeing firsthand the hell that Madoka went through just to attempt to save Madoka in another timeline. Eventually, once she sees Kyubeys deceptive true nature, she resolves to go back in time and try to prevent Madoka from making a contract at all. She tries this again. And again. And again. And again. At some point, most people would give up. Not Homura. She outright says shell do it forever if it means she can save Madoka. The Wiki says she does this around 100 times. She really likes Madoka! Getting a high B score often involves sacrifice (or at least the willingness to sacrifice) and Madoka sacrifices herself so many times. She even attacks Kyubey directly on some loops, which doesnt amount to much, but she shows a willingness to play outside the rules. Conversation: 1. Does not seem to reallylike conversation all that much, lol. In the original timeline, Homura was much friendlier, though still very awkward; she was recovering from an illness that made her reluctant to get close to other people. Even when Madoka befriended her, she still kept her distance. In the present timeline, shes all business, sometimes eschewing conversation altogether. Shes got one goal, and she will achieve it, no matter what. Demeanor: 1.5. Cold and distant in the present timeline. As said in C, she was warmer in the original timeline, but even then she was unapproachable by virtue of being incredibly awkward. I wonder what would have happened had original timeline Madoka not died a horrible death would she have come out of her shell a little? Maybe theres a parallel universe out there where Homura can be happy with Madoka, without Kyubeys malicious influence Effort: 10. The very definition of an extremely polarized character in the Alphabet System! Despite her less than winning personality, Homura devotes all of her existence to saving Madoka. Like, everything else falls by the wayside; it is entirely about Madoka. As she herself puts it: I'll do it over, no matter how many times it takes. I'll relive it over and over again. I will find a way out. The one path that will save you from this destiny of despair. Madoka, my one and only friend. I don't care because if it's for you, I'll stay trapped in this endless maze...forever. And its all because Madoka was kind to her on the first day of school (and that she saved her life from Witches, sure). Truly a stellar example of paying it forward. Total Score: 47. ... I watched Kuuki's show, and I'm rather mixed on it. It got some big laughs out of me, but they slowed down as it went on and I got accustomed to the show's sense of humour. The unoriginal premise and cheap animation also do it no favours, although there is the occasional clever gag to get around this (like the teacher in episode 4 being a blurry photograph instead of a drawn character). I definitely don't regret watching this, and there were parts I enjoyed. The extreme brevity (without the opening and closing credits, you could watch the entire series in around 20 minutes) is its greatest strength, which is telling as I think it would have overstayed its welcome if it were much longer. Thanks for linking to it! The low ranking for Roxas makes sense because it's based purely on the KH2 prologue. I think if it was based on the entire series, he might get an extra point or two in his weaker categories, but even then he would still come in pretty low on this list. --- Call from demon - with dark power to tempt your mind, very proud of the power. 63. Venom Symbiote (Spider-Man) @Fluttershy_Pony https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/6/6e1abfeb.jpg Another cuddly little bunny. He's even in roughly the same pose as Malos! When Spider-Man is off on the Secret Wars, he finds a strange substance that turns his suit black and augments his abilities. Turns out that substance is a symbiote, a sentient organism that bonds with its hosts through covering their bodies and communicating with their minds. Over the years, this particular symbiote, whom Eddie Brock dubbed Venom, has had multiple hosts and gotten embroiled in many conflicts, sometimes on Earth, sometimes with its own kind on a larger scale. I read the highly detailed Marvel Database entry on the Venom Symbiote. I also read three issues of Venom storylines that were cited in the Wiki article: Venom: Space Knight #11, Venom (2018) #4, and Venom War #1. These are going to be cooooomplicated scores. The Venom Symbiote has such a lengthy history full of twists and turns. Ive tried to take into account older storylines as well as what the symbiotes been up to lately. Activity: 0.5. The symbiote has strengths (well get to those later), but for Activityit has a history of allowing its hosts to slip into anger, amplifying their greatest desires. Like hosts literally start murdering and eating people. So thats not good. Venom hosts fluctuate between corruption and purity, and even when the symbiotes been purified it still has a fear of relapsing into corruption. At one point it runs away from Eddie Brock, its most frequent host, because it thinks of itself as a parasite who can only ruin lives (it literally hides in Spider-Mans closet lol). Theres no denying that most of the hosts have committed crimes under its influencesat the same time though, its capable of great things. When it was bonded to Spidey, the symbiote fought crime, even going so far as to use his body while Spidey slept! But this isnt a positive for A though because he started to feel the fatigue as the symbiote put his body through all kinds of tough situations without his knowledge. Really, if you were the symbiotes friend, you probably wouldnt have the best time. Backup: 6. The symbiote often amplifies what its hosts want and gives them an outlet to manifest those desires; the fact that said outlet is often violent is a side effect. Eventually it comes to understand that what its doing is wrong, and it takes a more helpful approach, falling on the side of good more often than not. Has helped its hosts get out of tight spots a lot. Bonds with Dylan, Eddie Brocks son, and shares with him all its checkered past in some weird attempt at healing the family. Conversation: 8. C score here depends on the answer to the question: How good are you at talking to yourself? The Venom symbiote has a personality and motivations of its own, but it also has access to its hosts memories. As Venom likes to say, We are one. The symbiote is often very persuasive, for good or bad. Demeanor: 2.5. I mean its kind of a monster, right? Not in the sense of doing unspeakable things (although its certainly done unspeakable things over the years) but in terms of its appearance and Demeanor. Like look at this thing. All the scary teeth and the horrifying tongue. I know Demeanor and physical appearance arent the same thing, but heres an example of how inner and outer reflect each other. It also has a very quick temper and often flies off the handle, struggling to be reasoned with. Even as it reforms, it still tends to have an alien mindsetthough as Spider-Man points out, it cant pretend like it doesnt understand morality anymore after living on Earth for so long and bonding with so many people. This ones tricky (theyre all tricky!) because the symbiote truly does care for Eddie, even saying it loves him at one point. A number here seems insufficient given its history, but Im trying to take a lot of different things into account; looking at the 2s and 3s in D, I think it winds up here. Effort: 9. Say what you will about the Venom symbiote, it normally goes out of its way to keep its hosts. Sure, in the early days with Eddie it wound up abandoning him for Peter at least once, but it wanted to hold onto Eddie so bad it gaslit him and gave him fake memories so he wouldnt reject it like Peter did. Speaking of Mr. Parker, the symbiote recounts its history with Spider-Man by feeling compelled by his incredible sense of justice, even going so far as to call him Saint Peter. I would have done anything for him, it says. So I did everything for him. This perhaps explains why it takes Peters rejection so hard, why it fluctuated between wanting to return to him and kill him. If the person you loved and gave everything for wound up forcibly denying your friendship, wouldnt you be hurt too? Total Score: 52. Fun nomination! ... Copied to Clipboard!

62. Legoshi (Beastars) @Paratroopa1 https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/3/3b4fff9a.jpg At Cherryton Academy, all the students are anthropomorphic animals, divided into herbivores and carnivores. Amidst a culture of mistrust, gray wolf Legoshi must fight against his animal instincts while also making friends and helping out with the school play. I read the first two volumes of the manga, up to the second and final performance of the school play. No spoilers after that. Activity: 6. Legoshi is tall, hulking, and muscular, but hes super awkward and shy. He handles lighting for the drama club and shuns the spotlight (no pun intended). Spending time with him would likely involve lots of quiet time while he works on something beside you. Theres nothing wrong with that, really it just doesnt net high A marks because it would probably be a bit on the uncomfortable side due to his awkwardness (see D). Backup: 6. For somebody so shy, Legoshi actually has a lot of friends! Hes on good terms with his dormmates, all of whom are canines like him, but his closest friend was Tem, an alpaca whos killed at the start of the manga. We dont see the two of them interact much, but Legoshi backs up Tem by hiding a love letter Tem wrote to another student. He assumes Tem wouldnt have wanted it to get out. But as the letter falls out of his pocket in front of the other student, Legoshi ruminates that maybe its for the best that it worked out this way. Legoshi also is tasked with standing guard over a secret rehearsal involving Louis, the lead actor in the school play, which he does (albeit with some reservations). Generally Legoshi does his own thing but winds up helping out anyway. Conversation: 1.5. Very awkward and prone to noncommittal, often confusing answers. Genuinely seems to struggle with communication on a fundamental level. When hes confronted by someone at night about being a suspect in Tems murder the animal even goes so far as to brandish a pair of scissors at him Legoshi doesnt stop and defend himself. Instead he just marches forward without saying anything and grabs the scissors out of her hands! What is his gameplan here? And during the school play, he gets conscripted to be on stage during a fight scene with Bill, a tiger student, but Bills done something particularly heinous. Instead of attempting to talk with Bill, Legoshi just beats him up on stage, repeating Ill never forgive you over and over. This guy is bad with communication! Nobody really gets him. He even admits that he stands apart from everyone due to not only his status as a hulking carnivore, but also his awkward personality. Demeanor: 3.5. Off-putting. Legoshi frequently puts everyone he meets ill at ease with his long stretches of silence and inability to articulate his thoughts. Once you get to know him though, hes surprisingly sweet and can even be a bit of a practical joker. He smiles twice in volume 2; both times are called out because its so rare to see him do it. This rating might go up with more character development; like I said, I only read two volumes. Effort: 10. Here we go. This is where it gets really interesting. So Legoshis got a bit more to him than being a socially awkward nerd in the body of a fearsome predator. Hes also constantly fighting his predatory instincts to kill and eat herbivores. Not every herbivore, mind you; he doesnt get this reaction around Louis, a deer, and presumably he didnt around Tem. But when he sees Haru, a tiny bunny, he is just overwhelmed by the desire to kill and eat her, to the point where he loses control to his instincts (manifested as a tiny person egging him on), holds her down, and claws at her flesh. He doesnt get further than that because she manages to escape, but the memory of it haunts him. Other characters, even some herbivores, keep demanding that Legoshi let go and show them the true power of a carnivore. Still, Legoshi is able to resistat least most of the time. When he sees Haru again, its clear he still retains his earlier desires, but theyre mixed with something sexual as well, further compounding his misery and self-loathing. Like, he really hates himself. He hates himself for having impure, socially forbidden thoughtsbuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut. In spite of that! He is able to maintain close friendships with all kinds of animals. He can hold a conversation (an awkward one, granted) with Haru without tearing her limb from limb. The sheer amount of willpower Legoshi has to exert basically all the time to not succumb to his murderous instincts, in a world where animals tend to retain some level of instinctual behavior, and even in the face of added social pressureholy hell, dude. This guy deserves a fucking medal. Total Score: 54. ... Copied to Clipboard!

And now, Scenes from the Class Struggle in the Friend Ranking. - 61. Charlotte La Bouff (The Princess and the Frog) @Raka_Putra https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/f/f4b8c335.jpg In this Disney animated classic, working-class Tiana knows she can achieve her fathers dream of opening up a restaurant in the 1920s if she just works hard. Meanwhile, her pampered wealthy friend Charlotte dreams of only finding a prince and having a fairy tale wedding. Charlottes courtship with Prince Naveen takes place in the background of Tianas adventure. I watched the movieand I was stunned that this wasnt a nomination for Ray the firefly. But hey, we must work with what were given! Beware of spoilers. Activity: 7. Charlottes family has money! Shes at the top of the social hierarchy in town. If you were her friend, youd get some perks, as Tiana does. She and Charlotte are playmates from an early age, and theyve kept up their friendship throughout the years. Tiana doesnt really get access to the La Bouff inner circle or something, Big Daddy La Bouff isnt that type of rich man, but as a kid Tiana gets to visit the La Bouff estate on playdates. Charlotte takes a hand in planning Mardi Gras celebrations, so if you like that sort of thing, she might be your kind of friend. Backup: 3.5. Its obvious Charlotte cares for Tiana. Its equally as obvious that she doesnt understand the problems that Tiana, a young, working-class woman of color, experiences. We see Charlotte provide Backup twice, and theyre both things she can easily understand. When Tiana gets knocked into her table of baked goods shes made for the party at the La Bouff estate, Charlotte isnt distressed about all Tianas hard work going to waste. No, she immediately is like, Lets get you into a new dress! The climax is a more effective example of Backup: as princess of the Mardi Gras parade, Charlotte agrees to kiss the real Prince Naveen, whos been turned into a frog along with Tiana, so the two of them can be restored to human. Thats about it, really! Shes not a bad person at all; she just doesnt seem to be the kind of person who thinks of other people first. Conversation: 4.5. Seems to exist in her own world of fairy tales and romance. In fact, shes such a bad listener that she doesnt even notice that the fake Prince Naveen, whos courting her, is turning into somebody else she keeps going on about how glorious their wedding will be! I have to wonder what Charlotte even talks about to other people, or if she even lets other people have their turn in the conversation. Demeanor: 8. Genuinely a lovable character! Disney walked a fine line here. They could have easily made her a clueless rich bitch, but they gave the character heart. She very clearly adores Tiana, and even more importantly, Tiana likes her! They have a friendship seemingly built on mutual respect, despite the class and racial differences. Charlotte is flighty and spoiled but we never see her lash out at anyone besides her daddy, and even then its played for laughs. At the end of the movie, she could have easily been envious of Tiana finding a prince before she did, but shes moved to tears, happy that her friend gets a fairy tale ending. Really great writing from Disney here. Effort: 4. The La Bouffs are probably the wealthiest family in New Orleans. Its clear Big Daddy La Bouff is well-respected and uses his considerable funds on the town, but I get the sense that Charlotte isnt exactly putting any of that money toward her friendship with Tiana. She offers Tiana a ton of money so Tiana will bake at the party, but why doesnt Charlotte offer to take out a loan so Tiana can start her precious restaurant? Such an act would surely be trivial for Charlotte. Thing is, we dont know if Charlotte has offered, and Tianas turned her down, in keeping with her hard work American dream nonsense. But its just as easy to assume the thoughts never even occurred to Charlotte to ask. I know this movie isnt really intended to be a meditation on classism, but Charlotte exemplifies the well-meaning upper-class socialite whos so moved by injustice in an abstract sense but doesnt ever really think of the injustices happening blocks from her home. This movie would look a hell of a lot different if it got made today, thats for sure! Total Score: 54. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I was expecting the C to be his best pillar, but it seems it backfired... honestly, the quirky catchphrases feels like a trait injected in the writing rather than something unique to him, such as Max or the Maimtron 9000. In my imagination, he could be a hours-long conversation pal, but I fully understand why that would be a deterrent. Perhaps I'm too tolerant of how much fun the game has with its dialogues. However, yeah, I think this is a great analysis, thank you for featuring him! ... Copied to Clipboard!
