Seeing it Saturday.

Saw Megalopolis last Saturday so it doesn't look like my luck is changing. <_<

I did see The Wild Robot in between at least.

Saw it tonight

Plot free spoilers but I'll tag it just in case
Movie was messy and felt like a 30 minute epilogue to the original stretched out into a 2 hour musical.

That said there are some good parts, and the two leads are both pretty good. Just feels needless.

can't say i intend to because i don't really see the point. Joker was a complete movie. Quinn doesn't need to be made relevant and she's literally an add-on from the TV show that got famous. yeah she's got a story and development now but it's just not the same, she ain't The Joker. doesn't help that we've already got a very serviceable version of her by Margot Robbie so... why, really. for the darker tone in that universe? doesn't seem like a setting she really fits in and definitely doesn't seem like something i'd ask Gaga for since she's nowhere close to Phoenix as an actor.

There's something in there about people who badly misunderstood the first movie being firmly put in their place by this one. Like it's Phillips trying desperately to undo some kind of damage. But...yeah, still messy.

It's a little funny how this one's being taken because the director's been kind of a douchebag since the first one, and god is the budget inflated compared to the first one. At least Gaga got another album out of this one, and probably had a bunch of fun making the movie.

Okay but who actually cares about those fucking weirdos. They won't learn anything from it and they'll keep being weirdos. There were a ton of people outnumbering them who understood the original movie and appreciated it and enjoyed it for what it was and didn't get really weird about it, and this seems to bungle it entirely for some misguided statement against the freaks.

i don't think that works either. based on spoilers it seems like the clearest lesson isn't gonna be what the director wants again, again. if he just kept being joker then he would've had it all. clear takeaway is "don't flinch, give no quarter. if you're going mad then embrace the madness."

though i also don't know exactly what you mean on the first movie, generally it seems most get that yeah, he's a villain by the end, they just can relate to that descent on some level and sympathize. also that final scene is just absolutely amazing and gives a feel of "yeah he's wrong but i get it"

Tbh I don't get what was supposed to be so objectionable about the first movie. The only thing offensive about it was how inoffensively toothless it was. It became the first of FOUR DC Comics movies I personally felt wasted considerable opportunity to make genuine examinations of sociopolitical issues, followed by Wonder Woman 1984, Black Adam, and Blue Beetle.

And no, especially now I think it's fair to expect more out of comic book movies. Even on THIS front movies like The Suicide Squad and even Iron Man back in 2008 had more substantial things to say. Yes I'm bitter having gotten into comic book movies in the late 2010s because of all the storytelling opportunities provided by the subject matter, only for the genre to largely degenerate into corporate sludge this decade. More pronounced with DC but Marvel's not off the hook either - might not help I've skipped a lot of the more contentious installments in the Multiverse Saga (e.g. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, The Marvels).

Holy crap, are Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine SERIOUSLY the only comic book movies to reach the billion-dollar mark this decade? Two movies all about fanservice? Comic book movies are dead.

Somewhere in between. Borderlands was legendary bomb territory, as a proportion of its budget goes it might have been the all-time record holder until Megalopolis came along. Madame Web was a normal flop.

Right now this is headed for 200-250 million on a 190 million budget. Domestic takings are terrible but international is saving it a bit. Likely to lose about 100 million. Thats very bad and one of the worst of the year but not all time bomb territory. Its only another Flash not The Marvels.

Megalopoliss crown as the years biggest bomb is probably safe. $8.5 million on a $136 million budget!!

I'm not going to say that they made the movie to counter the people who misunderstood and liked the first movie for the wrong reasons, but I am going to say that this movie has zero ambiguity, and every detail is spelled out for the audience in a way the first movie didn't do.

i'll always disagree with this notion of "oh they liked it for the wrong reasons." like no, you just presented a character that had traits which were so obviously likeable and understood, despite the negative aspects, that he resonates well with people. the idea of liking him for the "wrong reason" is essentially admitting that you accidentally made a good character with depth.

it's basically Rorschach and Watchman all over again. though considering the way this movie ends, while everything is very spelled out it's done in such a way that i don't think there's argument against the idea that he should've stayed evil. and that's a wild result to leave because it's totally not the desired takeaway. it just happens to also be an answer hard to argue against.

No, it means you have poor media literacy - you don't get what you're reading. This is especially true of Rorschach.

borderlands, the crow, joker, megalopolis, madame web come to mind immediately. don't think many cared for ghostbusters either. there's way more financial flops but eh. i also don't think we've seen the biggest one yet because gladiator 2 is either gonna be amazing or make every one of those look like blockbusters.

Ah I forgot about The Crow! Like most people evidently. Though tbf that was only a $50 million budget so not the same scale as the others. Id say Ghostbusters narrowly escapes on both counts too, it doubled its budget so probably roughly broke even and got poor reviews but didnt get panned either.

I definitely hope Gladiator II both is amazing and does well!

oh i totally forgot the crow existed too. it's one of those movies that when i saw the trailer i was absolutely baffled as to why this was a thing, forgot about it, and then saw the pitch meeting title and went 'wait this came out?'

actually maybe that's more of what it is on my end, just recency bias. The Crow was August, Borderlands was August, Megalopolis was September, Joker was October. Webb gets remembered for the memes but the past 2 months have been absolutely cursed.

i also want Gladiator 2 to be good but after Napoleon last year... i don't have high hopes for Ridley Scott anymore.

Just saw it last night. For what it's worth, I don't agree with the interpretation that the rape is what causes him to stop being Joker. I think when he hears the young inmate murdered by the guards after he is thrown back in his cell after that scene is when he comes to the realization that he is a bad influence on his "fans". Possibly also the Puddles testimony played a part in that as well.

I don't want to defend it too strongly because it's still an obviously bad movie. But I do think it's slightly less crass than people are saying.
