Probably because most westerners prefer the convenience of western utensils they grew up using. (assuming tc is a westerner).

They did the same thing to me when I went to Vietnam. My friend is Vietnamese American and they would give me fork and him chopsticks.

My wife is Asian, I am not. They always ask me "chopstick or fork" while handing her chopsticks.

I'm used to it.

On a somewhat related note.... I went out with someone from Taiwan last month, and apparently she was impressed that I was able to use chopsticks in the first place, and that my ability to use them was actually decent for someone who was self taught in an area of the world where the closest thing we have to Asian cuisine is a takeout Chinese Canadian restaurant that may as well not be Chinese in the first place. Very different cultures when it comes to eating and buying food. They are used to paying, and in my province we do the same, so it was a cross culture standoff before I suggested we each pay for our own the first time around.
