INTRO

Welcome to my series of topics! I'm asking the question of if a movie is "Good" or "Bad". Feel free to caveat in the topic, since there are definitely movies that are objectively terrible that someone can like. Also, I'm gonna go alphabetically usually so if you have a movie you want tossed in here, go for it and give me a recommendation.

NOTE : It is unlikely I will put in universally beloved films since I mean, the jury is kinda already out on that. No reason to really ask if Jurassic Park is a good or bad movie. I might break this now and then with my own personal favorites or universally beloved movies that I personally don't like since you know, it's my series of topics.

NOTE 2 : Why is there no "Meh" option? Cause that would dominate the topic every single time. I'm usually not picking universally loved or hated movies, so forcing you to pick whether it's good or bad, that dichotomy? It's kinda the point. If you can't hedge and you just gotta say it's a good movie or not... what is your answer.

FILM DISCUSSION *SPOILERS*

Now 26 years old (Holy fuck I'm old), Rush Hour saw the latest buddy-cop action flick, this time with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan as the unlikely partners working together! While the whole idea of unlikely duo's has existed for pretty much as long as we have been telling fictional stories, and the buddy cop genre has existed for a long time, that doesn't mean that a rote genre doesn't have something to give to an audience. The devil is in the details of course.

Jackie Chan was always the plan for one part of the duo, as director Brett Ratner basically demanded that it be a role for Jackie Chan to do. That is who he wanted and that is who he got to do the role. Interestingly, there was a whole host of other actors considered and offered the role of James Carter, including Martin Lawrence, Wesley Snipes, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Dave Chapelle. (Snipes decided against it to do Blade, so not a bad decision. Eddie Murphy passed to do something called Holy Man? Oooof). For his part, Jackie Chan wanted it to be Martin Lawrence, but the dude wanted too much money so he passed on it as well. Eventually Ratner flew Jackie Chan to meet up with Chris Tucker, and everything fell into place! Brett Ratner said he always envisioned Jackie Chan being the equal to a native English speaker for a role like this rather than being seen as a sidekick or a supporting character. Despite this the studio felt that English speaking audiences might not see Jackie Chan in that way and only did allow for a budget around like 35 million dollars... thus the "low offer" to Martin Lawrence.

Despite all the hoops and not getting who they initially thought, the chemistry was very spot-on between them as audiences loved their work together. Nearly everyone enjoyed it... and I say nearly everyone because Jackie Chan has publicly stated he doesn't like it at all! LOL! "I didnt like the movie. I still dont like the movie ... I dont like the way I speak English, and I dont know what Chris Tucker is saying .. If you see my Hong Kong movies, you know what happens: Bam bam bam, always Jackie Chan-style, me, 10 minutes of fighting" So despite it reviewing decently well and performing exceptionally well at the box office, Jackie Chan did not really like it. Of course that wouldn't stop him from doing the two sequels, but whatever, we will get to those later potentially.

Speaking of Rotten Tomatoes, Rush Hour was the first new major film to get the "Rotten Tomatoes" treatment, as the website was designed primarily by someone who was a big Jackie Chan fan! He collected all the reviews for some of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong releases and then in anticipation of Rush Hour's release, he coded the website and it went live a couple of days before the release!

I'm a Jackie Chan fan, pretty big fan and I loved Chris Tucker in Friday and Money Talks. Not to get sidetracked but Money Talks is absolutely hilarious and his best movie. And really I knew Chris before his movie days when he was on Def Comedy Jam on HBO multiple times doing standup. Honestly his movie/tv career is rather sparse. You take away the Rush Hour franchise and the two movies I mentioned and he has almost nothing else.

Anyway I absolutely like this movie and series. Definitely a good movie.

I can never hear that Mariah Carey song without seeing that little girl in the limo.

I hadn't watched it the whole way through in years and wasn't prepared for this part when I finally did. Her singing her heart out and the two bodyguards expressions while they listen it is such a great small scene.
