That does look like something that I would enjoy but I don't have a PC and have never used Steam before.

I've been pretty much Playstation only for a long time now.

I used to, but one particular game made my blood pressure rise too much, and I kept having to take breaks every 30 minutes, ruining the flow.

So now if it's during the day, I'll let some light slip through the curtains, and if it's night I'll turn a lamp on.

I still play with headphones on regardless though. Silent Hill 2 Remake's sound design is excellent.

I hate headphones and don't go for horror games much anymore (the last one that actually did anything for me was the original Dead Space, shortly after its release).

So D. I did play DS in the dark though.

Dead Space 2

It was the part where you go back to the Ishimura, and it's pitch black in places where the only thing you can see is the red streaks of the monsters' eyes darting around as they stalk you. I said fuck this I need a break and had to turn a light on.

Honestly, that one just felt like more they were trying to make a shooter with a scary vibe to it rather than the horror of the first game. Though I admit that I definitely felt uncomfortable during the "stick a needle in your eye" promise-like sequence. However, that was less scary and more one of those things you NEED to use right. I think it fit well there, but normally, messing with eyes is something you need to be careful using because it is very much a thing the average human is repulsed by. This is actually a major issue with some adult "comedy" cartoons that failed to be anything remotely amusing. Because doing that to that organ of the body goes against basically every rule of traditional comedy. And yes, I realize its weird to bring up failure late night comedy cartoons here in a topic about horror games.

EDIT: Part of the issue with DS2, beside the point that you already know at least some of what those things are, is also local. You are not in some boondocks location on a giant isolated ship. You get right into it with some pre-plot and being in a major city with full official and military support efforts at least trying to do something.

The atmosphere is just so much different from the "You are out in the middle of nowhere in space, investigating something weird and now being stuck there" vibes of the original. I never played Silent Hill, but even I know it didn't take place in the middle of, say, New York for a reason. At a certain point, being too close to the heart of civilization, if you are not going full and total collapse with extra wings, is just another zombie survival game. And in many cases, even if you go all out, it IS just a random zombie survival game. A critical aspect of horror is to make it clear that hope and salvation are not possible at any point of the near future, and that a single misstep will be your end.

Why not? Why do some horror games have a message screen saying that the game is best experienced while using headphones?

Why do most games have a headphones/headset sound setting in the options menu?

I dont recall ever seeing that. Why not though? I use headphones when trying to listen to something without disturbing others. Thats not an issue for me with gaming.

Id imagine because some people like to use them. And thats fine. But I dont see any reason why I would.

There a few that do, but one of the first screens of the new Silent Hill 2 Remake is all like, "Use headphones bro, makes this game better."

That game's sound design is amazing. The creepy random ghostly whispering in some places feels like an ASMR session massaging my eardrums.
