Martin didnt grow up speaking English, but he did grow up listening to pop music in English, so the meaning was always secondary to the sound. Thats how he writes, too. Martin regularly mangles English-language grammar and slang because its not important to him. With Baby One More Time, he figured that everyone would understand the whole hit me, baby, one more time refrain meant call me, that it wasnt about violence or S&M. Jive changed Martins title to Baby One More Time, trying to avoid controversy. (Technically, the title is Baby One More Time, but Im not typing a million ellipses into this column.) It didnt work.
