They're not an audiophile pick or anything but I do want to call out for anybody who's looking for a really good budget pair, this cheap set of headphones I got off Amazon about three years ago

https://www.amazon.com/DOQAUS-Bluetooth-Headphones-Wireless-Microphone/dp/B08PY9LYQ8/

I initially bought them for watching TV since the headphones I had at the time didn't have Bluetooth, but these ones quickly became my go-to pair for everything

I think my dad has some $400 Sennheisers. He likes audio stuff but he's not dropping money on like Meze headphones or whatever. That's like the extreme audiophile stuff along with the amplifiers with like 6 vacuum tubes and La Scala speakers.

If you wanna go easy just like get a Amp with one or two vacuum tubes, Sennheiser headphones and basic Klipsch speakers. Then you get your spiffy record player and play ... I dunno whatever you have on Vinyl, whether it's The Fat of The Land on vinyl or the limited Streets of Rage vinyl with the uncompressed soundtrack. So warm, so... smooth.

Not by anybody Ive ever met, but as Ive said, Im not an audiophile. They were almost 500, so I doubt that crap is the right word for them. Its possible that theyre not great value compared to other things in the same price range though. I wouldnt know.

I've had a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50Xs for a couple of years now and they're good enough for my current purposes. From what I understand, there's only so far you can go with closed back headphones, especially if you don't want to use an amp/DAC, and that kind of setup is too cumbersome for me right now. I also have a very large head, so that opens up another can of worms when it comes to headphone shopping; I actually had to bend my current set quite a bit to make them comfortable, and you can't always do that with every set.

The xm4s dropped to $130 for about an hour recently and I managed to snag a pair. I like them more than I thought I would. Hated them and found them muddy and bloated when I tried at a store a while ago but the bright profile actually sounds significantly better than the default. Still prefer my Bowers PX sound wise but better ANC on the Sony.

Sony's noise canx is really good. I bought the XM4s because of how highly rated they were - I had a pair of 770s before and they were extremely average. The XM4s are brill.

That said, if we're looking at a gear change between MDR-770s and WH1000-XM4s, what would you recommend as a next step up? I like headphones with bass and volume. Let's assume a budget of 300?

For now, yep. I have a sim rig and it's tangled in wires all the time. I just want something to beep boop and it's good to go.

Unfortunately I use iphones and they're wank for that - I miss my Android phone for the tap to connect, but it's what I deal with.

TLDR - bluetooth fun stuff would be lovely. And I fully appreciate that's like asking for a V8 in a Prius.

Yeah I have been using the DT 770 Pros as both my music listenin' headphones and my video gaming headphones for the past like 6 years. (Bought a modmic attachment for it for the times I am playing online with somebody).

I pair it up with this old astro mixamp pro TR I still use and a fiios portable amp. (I commonly use this when I play on the PS5/used to use on my PS4 since the audio quality via usb is way better than using the dualshock 4's or dualsense's 3.5 audio jack).

Another thing I like about them is how easy they are to repair. My original sliders broke apart ages ago but I was able to slap some 3D printer replacement on them for like 15 bucks off ebay. I also paid someone like 50 bucks on etsy to make a replacement 3.5 audio cable mod since the original hardwired cord got a short in it like a year or so back.

Also replaced the velour earpads

If anyone here is browsing to get ideas for headphones to buy, look into the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (80 ohm) that a few have linked. They were my first "big" headphone purchase and those suckers lasted me a good ten years. Right now I have a pair of AKG K701s that are on year 8 or 9 and only needed a cable replacement. I'm sure I could have gotten a lot more life out of the DT770s if I had my soldering stuff back then.

Also a fan of the Etymotic ER-4P

Would just stick with xm4 tbh. They're more bass heavy than most of the higher end options and with battery degradation I don't think it's with spending huge amounts on Bluetooth headphones since they all have a limited lifespan.
