I will always point out that despite having cake in the title, cheesecake and carrot cake are almost always offered in pie shops alongside standard pies and not, say, as an alternative option to chocolate or birthday cake. They may technically be considered cake the same way a tomato is technically a fruit but culturally cheese cake is a pie.

Which is to say it's arbitrary nonsense and thus I vote that cheesecake is actually a form of cheese on cracker and belongs on a charcuterie board.

On the other hand, I'd argue that both cheesecake and carrot cake are stored with the other cakes in the refrigerated cake section of my local supermarket, and not the pie section with the pies.

Though now you've raised an even more interesting question - why are things like banana bread and zucchini bread called "bread" when they're actually much more cakelike in nature? And almost always served in the same social/culinary context as cakes are rather than bread?

Cheesecake doesn't necessarily have a crust (see basque cheesecake)

it is neither cake nor pie, it is its own thing: a cheesecake. It has the word cake but that doesn't mean it is a cake.
