I mean if you want to fall in love with something that has essentially no personality aside from doing whatever you ask (unless it's answer questions about politics), you probably aren't in the headspace to be in a relationship anyway.

Falling in love isn't cheating. Whether it's with an AI or a human or anything else, it's not cheating as cheating is an action, falling in love is a feeling.

if that sort of emotional crutch is what somebody needs to do whatever it is they've gotta do, to be a functioning adult in society, I don't see a cause to mock them for it.

In an ideal world it wouldn't be necessary, or would have ample support networks in place such that people don't resort to those sorts of artificial methods. We unfortunately have an end-state capitalistic dystopia, so we don't have that.
