You can play to win without being a cheap asshole.

Don't sign up for the game in the first place if people playing it without letting you win pisses you off so much

I hate it when its obvious they aren't even trying to guess the price. The ones who only ask what the highest bid is, then go for the $1 over.

The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.

That's literally scrub mentality.

No, it's usually "I are smart! I bid $1 more than highest bid!" Going $1 more isn't always the best move, since it tends to backfire on you, overbidding instead of being smart and conservative bidding. It's not Final Jeopardy, after all.

Okay, not the point. If you think the price is higher than the highest bid, you bid $1 higher, not any other amount higher. Just because they were wrong about the price doesn't make the strategy wrong.

The final person should always bid $1 more than someone else's bid or $1. If the bids so far are $1000, $1200 and $1400 the ONLY good final bid is $1, $1001, $1201, or $1401. Any other bid is stupid.

If there's an optimal strategy that's allowed within the rules of the game and you're not using it then you're not playing to win.

TPIR could have it so that the players all punch in their bids on keypads and only show them once all players have bid so that no player gets to bid with knowledge of what any of the other players' bids are, but they don't do that.

Going last is a big advantage, for sure, but the game is meant to work that way.
