I always thought Mt Rushmore would be a lot bigger than it is. Its pretty underwhelming.

And I knew the Grand Canyon was big, but no picture you can Google really gives you the full scope of how insanely huge it is. You get there thinking Yeah, its gonna be huge. Then you actually see it and its fucking mind blowing.

Yeah The amount of personal items that you can see over the ledge is pretty haunting.

Right? Youre driving over an endlessly flat landscape. Then bam.

Never been to the Grand Canyon, but I had a similar feeling when I visited the Great Wall of China. Just being on this massive manmade structure that you can see continuing infinitely in both directions as it climbs over literal mountains is ridiculous.

Never been to Rushmore either (despite being from Minnesota), but Ive heard tell of its mediocrity. Makes perfect sense, given the story behind its creation.

how I felt when I was in a plane that flew over the Sahara.

I knew it was the world's biggest desert, but seeing how "endless" it was, it felt like an ocean.

also, I've always wanted to see the Grand Canyon but never went that way.

My girlfriend at the time told me I was being a bummer because of how boring it is. And there are tons of kids climbing all over areas that have signs posted not to go past them. And none of the workers there do anything to enforce it. Easily the worst monument or National Park Ive been to.

The ice cream was great, though.

I did a hike there a few weeks ago. Started at the rim, went down to the river, then back out of the canyon. The last three miles were tough.
Awesome experience, though.

My dad is from South Dakota so I went to Mt. Rushmore a bunch of times as a kid. I always liked it but I associated it with camping in the Black Hills, which I loved.

I did love camping in the Black Hills. I found tons of quartz from when they blasted the faces. Then the Badlands isnt very far from there.

Mount Rushmore is small and shitty if you look at it with the perspective of Mount Rushmore instead of as Six Grandfathers as a whole, sacred site.

Have you seen the Crazy Horse monument? Now, 70 years later, the same family is still working on carving out the warrior and his horse from a mountain... still mostly by hand.

Monument photographed behind 1/34-scale model used to sculpt the mountain.

Honestly, I went to see the grand canyon and I wasn't impressed. After 5-10mins of staring, I was like, what do we do next? Lol

Also, I remember our tour guide said that people spend more time at the gift shop of the grand canyon than the grand canyon itself. I can see why.

Just echoing what a lot of people already said, went to Rushmore as a kid and was really underwhelmed. Went to the Grand Canyon as an adult and obviously you here still all the time about how great it is but nothing can really prepare you for it. I was completely blown away, it kind of reminds me of seeing the ocean in that it makes you feel so small but in a good way.

Really wanna go back sometime and spend some more time out there, I just took a day trip out there while I was visiting Vegas.

Eh.

As long as you keep general city wariness it's fine.

Reflection pool is okay, Lincoln is pretty cool.

WWII memorial is also neat.

The Smithsonian is where it's at, the Natural History one is possibly my favorite museum.

For sure. Big Ben in pretty much every piece of fiction I've ever seen is a freestanding structure, black or very dark brown, and so large that people look like ants from the top. Actual Big Ben is attached to one end of the Palace of Westminster, light brown, and only moderately tall. I thought Google Maps sent me to the wrong clock for a second.
