Unfortunately, it didn't seem to go very well and some Japanese netizens are putting their transphobia in full display.

Really depends on the sport. Went through in the 2000s and it was certainly divided when we played things like basketball, soccer, etc. Basically, any time it was competitive we were divided. Even on the fun days where we played dodgeball, the girls were typically the ones getting smoked and the first ones out. And the boys were clearly targeting them

The underlying issue here is that women have a disadvantage in contact sports against men. It's become more common in coed gym classes and has raised some numerous controversies on what is and isn't fair in female sports. While transphobia is definitely a prevalent issue that needs to be addressed, how should schools approach the problem without reminding biological women that they're the weaker sex in terms of physical prowess?

Japan apparently thinks they haven't done it then it doesn't count.

Seems we have a lot on common there.

What hurts the most is that a lot of young Japanese voters are more conservative than the older generation. Even though momentum for marriage equality is growing in the country, a number of people there continue to cling to patriarchal values.

I had PE with girls mixed in 20 years ago.

Not a single person complained about it, and us boys didn't attack the girls.

This seems to be a problem in many countries. Even America. Apparently while most young women are leaning liberal, a lot young men are not. It's very disappointing

Japan and Korea in particular have their share of right-wingers. Thankfully, there's no sense of coordination between them at the moment since they hate each other so damn much. It's not the case in the Western world where English-speaking conservatives team up with one another to collectively attack those outside of their group.

Its not the same as right-wingers holding on to their beliefs. They have completely different issues, worries, and things they want to hold on to here. Just look at how they dont all hate on LGBTQ like western Conservatives do.

Not defending them at all, just saying, dont think it means the same thing.

Which school did you go to in Japan? Because apparently, the middle school that's being talked about recently made their soccer classes coed three years ago, making it rather recent.

You have to keep in mind times have changed. It's naive to pull the whole "back in my day" card. Unfortunately, as the social space evolves, we find ourselves both progressing and regressing in various ways. You'd be hard-stretched not to find a modern day youth not engrossed in social media which is deepening the divide between genders and furthering animosity.

It kind of is. We live in a world that's more connected than ever before so we have grade schoolers quoting Andrew Tate in the classroom for shits and giggles slowly blurring the line between what's a meme and something they should actually believe. Young men are being further radicalized to either adopt or tolerate attitudes that are disrespectful towards women, LGBTQ, DEI, etc. Do you not see us regressing as a society?

I can agree that I didnt have any issues personally with coed PE, Im trying to consider their POV. I do think the most competitive guys tended to take over in competitive games when we played them. It was mostly basketball and floor hockey. On the other hand, those werent overly common. While most of the statements in the original post are rather needlessly abrasive, Im not too sure how PE works over there. As others said, we didnt do contact-type sports too much, but I cant remember everything we did. If they do those types of things more, I could at least see the justification for some complaints, to a point. But this is me trying to just not immediately throw out what theyre saying, rather than necessarily agreeing.

In many ways, yes, of course. But I'd rather get to the root of the cause than apply band-aid solutions. I gather America isn't into all of that stuff though.

Fair. But you can't find a solution if you're going to dismiss the state of things and say there aren't any problems.

Main thing I'm getting at is it's reductive to look at something and go "well back in my day" when it's no longer back in your day. There could very well be something happening, and dismissing it isn't how you catch it and nip it in the bud
