It comes from a French word pronounced like "core," which means "body." "Corps" is, basically, "a body of men," referring to it as one unit.

A town in Colorado is named Buena Vista and the locals call it Byew-nah-vista.

Same thing with Salida, CO. They call it Sah-Lie-Dah

Yeah some of these make literally no sense. For example, Bexar, in Spanish, would be "Beh-har," not "Bear."

"Corps" is literally a French word, so that actually makes sense. The rest of these, though... Not so much.

When I lived in Ohio I worked for the railroad for a little while, and we used to take trains down to Lima. I hated it when they would try and correct me and say its pronounced Lie-ma.

Fun fact: coup de grce means "blow of mercy" but when you pronounce it "coo de grah," what you're actually saying is coup de gras, which means "blow of fat"
