I mean, Trump won. Not really much that can be done.

Especially that Trump has made it obvious he will extra-judicially target his enemies and treat himself and his friends as above the law.

We've always had a pretty separate legal system for "important people", it just usually isn't this obvious.

To be clear, Garland was most definitely soft on Trump. Despite your dear leader whining and clutching their pearls of "weaponized justice department", the JD was more invested in trying to appear unbiased, than actually being unbiased.

Because if they were actually unbiased, Trump would have been prosecuted month 1 of Garlands confirmation. The man dragged his feet on touching Trump due to optics.

And it makes me so fucking angry they did nothing about it. What was the reason? They damned the whole country (and perhaps the whole world) due to their gullibility and/or cowardice. So many innocent people will suffer and die now. It has also ruined what little faith and trust I had in Democrats, and I'm sure I'm not alone, unless the party completely changes, which I doubt.

Considering McConnell was the shot caller on court appointments, no, it really wasn't on Trump. The entire premise of appointing Garland as AG was to annoy the people who held up his nomination rather than do anything substantive.

Garland was presented as a compromise moderate for Rs to vote on and Mitch refused; the premise that Dems should've offered up a compromise AG after Jan 6th is a great microcosm of why Biden's handlers should be exiled from politics.

tbf, a 50/50 Senate majority with Cinema and Manchin blocking everything meant the first like 2 years of Biden's term was spent with everything being obstructed as much as possible. And this wasn't just the case with federal legislation - this was every single committee and department.

Garland absolutely could've gone much harder, but he was also stymied from doing anything until like 2023.

Since the party refuses to give us true leftist policy or even New Deal policy, "rule of law" and good governance stuff like this was supposed to be their calling card. They dragged their feet and couldn't even deliver that, and now here we are. Genuinely, shit likes this makes me want to become an independent or support a brand new labor party.

They failed the whole country, the world, the concept of accountability.

This is horrible, and inevitable once Trump won the election. Trump has done a lot of horrible corrupt stuff while President, but his attempts to undermine the 2020 election is the greatest threat to our government as a whole. Now he gets to walk away with no consequences and be President again. It is so gross.

Obviously Democrats and the few Republicans who actually care about a functioning government should have moved faster and done more. But as I have been saying since the election: I blame the voters more than anything. Trump is an obvious criminal, and has been well before he was a politician. And holding a former or current President criminally accountable was always going to be difficult and fraught. Our system was not designed to handle anything beyond impeachment. So much of our system presumes good faith, and that those elected to office take the public trust seriously. That is why it is pretty important that the people dont put a criminal in the Oval Office in the first place.

Trump has been screaming exactly who he is as long as I have been alive, and we certainly got to see his obvious corruption, immorality, and incompetence up close for a full term. Our voters are either too dumb or too ill informed or too hateful (often all three) to care. They voted for what they wanted, and it is going to mean bad consequences for all of us. The most immediate of which is Trump tried to steal an election on national tv and now will get away with it.

Democrats are going to keep being a punching bag. But lets not forget that we are in this situation because a lot of voters, twice now, have said they dont mind that their leader is an utter scum bag. The Democrats could have done better, but I am angry at the electorate. The voters in this country are simply ridiculous, and we are going to get the dumb, incompetent, catastrophic leadership that you get when people refuse to think or learn about anything.

That's unfair. There's literally no point to trying to push the case, because it is entirely based on legal rule. Any work he does will merely be met with "this is legally irrelevant and we will not proceed".

And it's an entirely self inflicted wound by the DOJ at this point. Garland dragged his feet on prosecuting Trump for election interference and stealing classified documents, making it easy for him to run out the clock.

Its because Smith officially has no more power here, and Trump has made it abundantly clear that he will punish anyone who goes against him, and picking spineless sycophants to run the DOJ basically guarantees that.

Smith can't really do anything anyways, because the second Trump takes office the DOJ will force him to drop the case, and then Smith will have to flee the country at best. Dropping the case first is at least bending the knee because he can't do anything anyways.

This is disgusting but when Trump won it was inevitable. People talk for days about corrupt billionaires never facing consequences, but we(the people) had the opportunity to send one packing and we failed to do so.

So the next time I hear somebody screech about how Trump didn't sign the ethics documents or transition documents, I literally don't care. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, or shut the fuck up. It's getting pretty draining hearing about the corrupt, illegal shit they're already doing in Trump round 2, but unless there is any sort of plan of action, I just don't give a shit.

That's not what Guides saying. Smith has no authority here to expedite this case. And even if it was expedited (it wont given the elements that were delaying things are still in play), Trump won and will be president in Jan which will further nullify Smiths efforts.

Smith continuing is quite literally pointless other than to put a larger target on his and families back given who his possible boss might become.

But ya, no doubt the DOJ fucked up.
