Cops claimed she approached them with a kitchen knife while she was holding the baby. To call it a kitchen knife undersells it I think.

So how would you sell it?

Yeah apparently only partial body cam footage was released. I really haven't followed much of this story since last time, as this happened in my town. But there is still waves of people showing sympathy towards the cop for killing a 2 month old. I will never understand it.

There were two cops there. I wish I could tell where she reaches for and grabs the knife from. It seems like one of the cops should have looked over the room to see if there were any weapons around, but it could have been hidden pretty well.

If the conflict was between the mother and her mother-in-law and that conflict was over, why did these dumbfuck cops insist on entering their apartment instead of waiting for a counselor? Did the mother-in-law tell them the baby was in imminent danger?

Independence PD isn't really known for using their brains.

I can understand shooting the woman if she was threatening them with a knife. (Note, I didn't say "it's right", I said "I can understand it".)

But what reason, ever, is there for a cop to need to shoot a fucking two-month old baby?

Well, in this case the latter only happened because they did the former. She was holding the baby. They didn't like, aim for the baby.

So baby doesn't die if they don't shoot at the mother.

Well from the footage, it's not like the baby is off to the side and the cop just turned and shot it after killing the mom.
The mom was holding the baby in front of her body in one hand and had the knife in the other hand, raised above her head.

Safe for life video (doesn't show the actual shooting). Apparently they went into the apartment because the grandmother reported a domestic assault.

Well as long as we can absolve the individual officer for one poor decision in the heat of a difficult situation, we can just ignore all the systemic issues that created the situation in the first place, right? No outrage about an infant death for us.

Proof the cops care more about their own lives than a baby. They could have done something else to disarm and subdue her. Why aren't cops trained in unarmed combat? They should have tried all in their power to avoid hurting the baby. But they were unwilling to take any risk to themselves for the sake of an innocent

There was also another incident recently where an intruder broke into a home and took a young boy hostage and the cops just shot the boy to kill the intruder behind him

Agreed 100%. I hate that the default response of police is to just mag dump at any sign of danger. So many innocent people die because they're trigger happy.

Did you guys even watch the video? You should be blaming the mother not the cops. They tried to get the mother to put down the baby for 11 minutes but she refused and grab the large knife. It just a shitty situation.

If you're unarmed and the other person has a knife, the only thing you can do is run.

Chances are, there was plenty of room, especially if the apartment in question has the sliding glass patio door. Although if the woman came from the kitchen with the knife, that might change the "was there room" bit, because not all the units in that complex has the same layout, and the kitchen might be close to the door into the apartment.

Gotta be a psychopath to be accusing the cops of doing something wrong here. Like there isn't even logic behind it, you're either thinking cops should let themselves be murdered or be capable of inhuman feats.

I don't care to see videos of people being gunned down, even if it's critical to watch. Sorry, but I'm not some sicko. Also, initially my understanding was this happened in the living room, and not the bedroom. I actually used to live in these apartments from 07 to 15, which is what my response is based off of.

No one is gunned down in the video. It stops right before that. Your speculations and guesses based on you having lived there offer nothing since we actually can see where they were in the actual moment

And that's fair. Like I said, before the video, I was under the impression it was in the living room. I was also under the impression that it was on the ground level when the story first broke here in Indep. After not watching the video, but fast forwarding it, I see it was in the bedroom/walk in closet.

Hard to be 100% certain, but feels like an unfortunate tragedy rather than blatant disregard of the child. There are probably good arguments to be made about points of prior deescalation, but you're not going to be able to safely disarm someone like that at that moment. If there was a wide space to back away and give commands, that'd be one thing, but I wouldn't say there's enough space to safely, quickly back away or turn around to run away.

This is the point. The exact act, in the moment, can be argued as making sense, given those exact circumstances.

What DOESN'T make sense is why it got there in the first place. What doesn't make sense is why it seems to always keep getting to these kinds of situations, when cops get involved. The fact police keep escalating things to these types of situations is incredibly alarming and something needs to be done.

What was the cop supposed to do? And no "Don't shoot" with no additional info isn't the answer. Watch the fucking video unless something crazy happens after the cut off that is a very short range charge with basically no time to respond in a way other than shooting.

OK, I haven't seen the video, but if the descriptions of what happens in it from this thread are accurate, it REALLY sounds like the cops aren't at fault here. If the woman really charged the police with a knife while also holding her baby, what else were they supposed to do, besides let her stab them or TRY (emphasis on try, because anyone stupid enough to charge cops with a knife while holding their baby is probably not a rational person) to retreat?

Disarm her? How do you do that in any form that doesn't likely end with her dropping the baby?

Hand to hand? Again, she's holding a baby, so any serious hit potentially ends with her dropping the baby.

Remove the baby from her? Good luck wrestling a 2-month-old from a woman holding a knife, without either getting stabbed or hurting the baby.

Really, I know so many people here have massive hate boners for cops, but this one doesn't seem nearly as black & white as most people would want it to be.
