So, you're telling me a guy went from Pennsylvania to New York just to shoot one guy & went straight back home? No matter how much they might have grievances with insurance companies, I doubt the average American has the time & money to pursue a vendetta on that level. I hate being a conspiracy nut, but really feels like they just set some poor guy up.

Luigi Mangione's family is wealthier than Brian Thompson was. He's a right wing techbro obsessed with birthrates and obsesses about Japan's in particular.

Yeah, the thing that tends to break the whole we must respond to a violent attack by addressing the societal issues that motivate by the violent attacker model is that often times the violent attacker is motivated by somevery strange issues
IDK, has the public really been interested in conversations about how to prevent this kind of attack? The whole discourse has been more like venting about how shitty US healthcare is and distrusting the country's business leaders more broadly. Like fundamentally, the feelings people have about this aren't anything like after a school shooting or most mail bombings. They at best don't give a fuck about the victim or they're actively glad he was murdered. And discussion about the shooter online has mostly hoped he never gets caught and that therefore the circumstance of the crime speaks for itself.

People wanted him to get away with it because they liked what he did, not because of which books he read. That feels like a very different situation than people feeling the need to justify the violence against kids or random grad students because "oh but you gotta read about his ideals bro".

Given how many are cited as being "paycheck to paycheck", it really is hard to believe most people have time & money to traverse state lines just to shoot one guy.

Yeah but "paycheck to paycheck" really means "to cover my standard of living I can't save and accrue wealth", not "I literally don't have a single penny in my bank account ever". If we are assuming this person really wanted to kill someone, I imagine they could I dunno, maybe default on the electricity bill for a month or whatever. I think wanting to commit a first degree murder might be sufficiently important enough to forego some other life thing for a while.

It should have not come to a point where violence or murder was necessary and I in no way condone that action but the fact is that it already happened. Nothing anyone can do about that. So we just choose not to celebrate the life of someone who dedicated their life to ruining the lives of countless families all in the name of greed.

Whether it happens or not, the fact that so many people are acting like the excited crowd at a public hanging is maybe a clue to what people are feeling.

People on the upper end of the wealth divide are really confused, because they've probably never had to watch or consider a loved one/friend/associate die or go in poor health because a chatbot decided the box ticking was insufficient.

Sure, but I don't think you're really responding to my post? You're saying people jumped the gun by glorifying the situation based on the suspect's assumed motives and will eat crow if he did it for some weird incel reason. I'm saying that the public's reaction to the crime was been based on who the victim was. Pictures of the shooter only trickled out after the initial reaction.

I still remember talking to a libertarian in grad school who didn't care at all about health care as a public policy issue because "once you have your first $10 million or so, health care costs aren't a big deal."

Also! Make a note that this board has gone from praising the murderer for standing up to oppressive elite and hoping he makes a clean getaway to now hoping that the underpaid fast food worker loses their job, and gets doxxed for the "crime" of turning in the murderer.

This board wants a worse outcome for a guy who turned in a murderer, than the actual murderer.

Some of you really, really need to take a long hard look at yourselves.

More about the handwritten note

He was found with a two-page, handwritten manifesto that was heavily critical of the healthcare industry and warned that violence was the only answer to changing it. "These parasites had it coming," he wrote in the document, a police official who has seen the document told CNN. "I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done," it continued. The manifesto also stated that Mangione was acting alone and had funded himself.

And you can bet that's all we're going to hear from now on. The discussion about class divide will be shut down because he was also wealthy, the concerns about health insurance will be dismissed if they weren't the motivation (and if they were the narrative will shift to that he could've afforded it), and him being conservative is all liberals needs to further chastise the idea that healthcare needs reformation.
