Posted this in the animation forum so at least there the content will remain up, but I figured this would make for some nice trivia.

In 94, Disney presented the five part pilot to audiences in Disney World and thus cut it down to be just 80 minutes long.

Said cut was used for the movie version, though there was a brief intro to the show from crew and cast members, plus an interactive VCR game at the end (I'll include them in the last post)

A fellow visitor to the Comment Room of Ask Greg and myself finally attempted to list these differences from the five parter.

Awakening Part One
The scene with the Captain of the Guard encouraging the soldiers to hold out until nightfall, along with the threat of dealing with him if they don't is cut.

The scene with Broadway taking time to eat meat and then using the food to attack the vikings is cut. As well as Mary and Tom observing the action.

The scene with Goliath and the Captain figuring that Hakon and the rest of the vikings followed the band of refugees given shelter in the castle is cut.

As the vikings flee, a soldier says "Who needs the gargoyles?" as opposed to suggesting the vikings will think twice about attacking the castle.

The scene in the dinner hall with the Captain speaking of Goliath's name in a positive light while Princess Katharine reminds them how the Biblical Goliath was a bully and savage is cut.

Demona speaking of how Goliath's patience astounds her is cut.

The Magus looking through the Grimorum Arcanorum is cut.

The entirety of the Trio's time in the rookery is cut.

Awakening Part Two
A brief bit where the vikings are happy with their victory is cut.

The quick blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot where Hudson gets his sword off a Viking is cut.

The fight between the clan and vikings are cut, including Broadway reaching for the leg of meat.

Goliath's request to the Princess about caring for the eggs in the rookery is cut.

Several shots of the present day the castle in the present while Xanatos arrives is cut.

After Owen brings up that work on the castle will be astronomical in cost, a new line from Xanatos ("Then it had better be worth it") is added before his request of a crew.

Owen bringing up the castle supposedly being haunted is cut, as is Xanatos response.

The disassembling of the castle as well as gathering up the clan by Xanatos Construction workers is cut.

The music played while the clan awakens for the first time in Manhattan is replaced with another track.

Goliath's awakening is a different effect in the movie, and there is an additional shot in the movie that's not in the episode of Xanatos stumbling backwards while shielding his face.

Goliath asking how long they were asleep is cut, while Xanatos answering him is kept in. Mention of the eggs and them being gone is also cut.

Broadway's fight with a Commando (voiced by Greg Weisman) is cut, as is his "Nice mask." line.

Xanatos firing at the Commandos while saying "Time to take the gloves off." is cut.

The music playing when Elisa's arrival is replaced with another track.

Goliath going over the edge of the building and climbing up is cut.

Lexington being restrained by a Commando is cut.

Brooklyn asking about the weapons used against them is cut.

Goliath asking Xanatos why he was attacked up to the former declaring that he won't trust humans again is cut.

Awakening Part Three
Xanatos clarifying that the claim of an exploding generator being info for the press only is cut.

In the episode, Elisa's line about weapons permits is, "I assume THEY have permits." In the movie, it's "I assume YOU have permits."

The trio's exploration and mishap in the [kitchen is cut, though the references to the scene are kept.

Hudson checking out the TV room is cut.

Brendan and Margot's appearance starts with the former looking for the cause of their car stopping. The scene before it where it stops is cut.

The scene of Goliath fighting the thugs has an additional shot in the movie, where we see Goliath bash two of the thugs' heads together. In the TV version, it's not clear what Goliath does to cause these thugs to be unconscious.

Awakening Part Four
The Trio finishing their exploration of the city and attempting to hail a taxi is cut.

Hudson channel surfing while in the TV room is cut.

Elisa shooting a Commando is cut.

Elisa stopping shaking off Bruno and the other Commando is cut.

The Jogger going by and asking about the statue is cut. So yeah, the Wyvern Clan eggs aren't the only casualty of cuts.

Prior to stating that the clan better not be harmed, Goliath has added dialogue ("Godspeed lads"). Though Demona reassuring him that though they are young, but trained by the best (i.e., him) is cut.

Goliath and Demona's happiness of being able to glide together again as well as Xanatos watching their departure is cut.

Near the end of the episode, when the Trio is breaking into the Cyberbiotics Tower, Brooklyn has a line deleted, resulting in Broadway's reply being redubbed from, "No problem", to "Come on. Let's do it!"

Awakening Part Five
The scene with the Cyberbiotics Commander and his men being informed of the other Fortresses being hit is cut.

In the movie version, the Station 2 Commander has an additional line when he sees Hudson on camera: "What on Earth?".

When Hudson and Bronx jump onto the subway car roof, Hudson has an awkwardly-dubbed line in the movie that is not in the episode: "I know, boy, but any port in a storm.".

After the Captain of Fortress-1 asks who Goliath is, there is an additional line from Goliath answering, "Your nightmare.".

Lexington also had an awkwardly-dubbed line when he's dodging fire from the Steel Clan: "I think it's safe to say they're not our friends!"

Hudson's line, "And they said the middle ages were barbaric." is cut.

I watched the movie version to death on VHS, it came with an ending for a Gargoyles board game that I never had and desperately wanted.

When I saw the actual five parter just 7 years ago, it was incredibly surreal to see the rookery and gargoyles eggs. I was like so they did foreshadow all this stuff, Disney just unnecessarily condensed the movie version!

The game is a rare example onscreen where Xanatos speaks like a typical villain. And Goliath's fantasy in The Goliath Chronicles episode Seeing Isn't Believing.

The fact that I have never found a Gargoyles fan online (and forget ever finding one in real life) made me sad that I couldn't share this discovery, because it felt like a neat tidbit and made my watchthrough of Gargoyles all the better, a combination of nostalgia AND the show actually holding up even better imo today, dated 90s references and all.

Because kid me was obsessed with the show. I had toys and everything.

Yeah for the most part as they especially just took a cut used for a special showing and even some scenes that made for some nice breathers, even the kitchen bit referred to twice.

The eggs was mandated for removal as the movie version is supposed to be more self-contained and their presence brings up questions that the story presented doesn't explore.

Ironically the one time that Greg Weisman and crew did make an episode to push for a new figure, Kenner didn't go for it. Referring to the Eye of Odin empowered Goliath from "Eye of the Storm".

Gargoyles was such a great show, its a shame what happened to it, I still hope that one day Disney will bring in Weisman to make a Disney plus show similar to what they did with X-men 97

Well it has been continuing in comic form. Starting with the 12 issue maxi Here in Manhattan, the recently ended 5 issue miniseries Gargoyles Quest which is the first time since Hunter's Moon we've had Present Day Demona.

Plus a Halloween Special last year and a Winter Special this month. Next year is another arc which will be preceded by Gargoyles Demona on Free Comic Book Day.

@JKwaffle
@saspa

For anyone else that didn't read it previously as well.

We were close to a Gargoyles revisit in the early 2000s.

Before it's theatrical performance proved disappointing to Disney, Atlantis The Lost Empire was going to have an animated series called Team Atlantis with the finished stuff used for the last minute sequel Milo's Return. There was to be an actual 2nd movie which would set the show up called Shards of Chaos.

It would end with Milo and Kida sealing the main entrance to Atlantis with the show centered around them looking for another means of entry, plus finding problems caused by Atlantis.

An episode which was completed in terms of voice recording would start with a Hunter named Fiona Canmore (voiced by Sheena Easton) destroying gargoyle statues as sunsets only to fail in destroying one which awakens and is Demona (reprised by Marina Sirtis).

From there Fiona gets injured and is treated by Doctor Sweet, the two also a former item.

Milo actually has a book written by an Angus Canmore who decrys gargoyles to be unholy monsters.

Kida and Mole when splitting up from the group earlier find Demona and offer to help her find what is the Praying Gargoyle statue from Hunter's Moon. The statue is revealed to have been created by magically fusing the stone skin of a gargoyle, plus an Atlantean Crystal. Not to mention, gargoyles did once aid Atlantis in the past and seen in a positive light.

So the team is a bit at odds until near the end of the story where Demona uses the Praying Gargoyle to bring regular gargoyle statues in Paris alive (animated, not flesh). Team Atlantis stop the statues, with Sweet although saving Demona from Fiona, smashes the Praying Gargoyle.

Episode ends with Demona getting the shattered remains of the statue and crystal which as long are both together, mends after a period of time if kept on Holy grounds.

The episode itself, is canon, but otherwise both properties different with the events of the episode being the only thing to happen in both continuities.

As a tribute to the abandoned, crossover, Gargoyles #3 (from Slave Labor Graphics in 2007) shows Demona repeating the process in her only then modern day appearance prior to the recent Gargoyles Quest mini:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/f/f24568d8.jpg

And yeah even though Atlantis The Lost Empire wouldn't be canon to Gargoyles, that is basically the same crystal from the movie lm

Fiona Canmore did make an actual appearance as of Gargoyles Bad Guys Chapter 6 (SLG lost the license for single issues, so 5 and 6 were trade exclusives):

Oh and several year prior to the first Gargoyles comic revival was JLA Showcase #1.

Had a handful of stories with Justice League members. One of them is The Flashback of Notre Dame where Captain Atom and the Europe branch of the League encounter these guys:

Story was originally titled A Case of Self-indulgence. Can't imagine why.

Which is weird because I specifically remember the movie ending with Elisa staring out at the morning dawn as the gargoyles turn to stone and says "I wonder if this city is ready for you guys"

So that clearly indicates that there was gonna be more, so the rookery eggs removal was unnecessary. On the other hand it would definitely have been confusing for kid me to see giant eggs from what I presumed were mammals (although probably not)

That episode was pretty scary, seeing Goliath become corrupted when they had previously shown him to be incorruptible.

OK this and the Atlantis crossover synopsis are fricking wild.

The idea of a crossover with Atlantis of all properties sounds goofy and reminds me of when Hercules had a crossover with Aladdin.

I actually wanted to read that Gargoyles bad guys comic from the 2000s, but it was in black-and-white so I just couldn't read it. Shame they didn't color it even for a digital release.

If the current Gargoyles comic runs are canon, does that mean the 2006 Gargoyles comic isn't canon? I liked that one and the art matched the show exactly, something that can't be said for the current 2020s comics if I'm being honest (I'm still gonna read them all, but just putting it out there)

Yep. But I hear some people new to Gargoyles did feel informed enough to enjoy them and merely made it fun for them to look up info on the property.

Wow, you must've really missed out. There was a big web site where people gathered on where people talked about the episodes as they aired (unfortunately it's down now). Had a bunch of commentary from Greg Weisman and everything. The Internet wasn't a complete dumpster in the 90s.

Oh wow that just unlocked a core memory from the deepest recesses of my mind, I remember this from the video we had. I think I still remember being rather bewildered that Xanatos was the one narrating, because it made me think the story of Gargoyles is being told... from the "bad guy's perspective" or something. Of course I loved Xanatos and those episodes where he became a good guy/allied with the Gargoyles were insanely mindblowing for me; I still remember jumping with excitement and joy.

I absolutely loved Goliath, his voice his presence his gravitas, and by extension that made me a big fan of Keith David.

That board game and timer on screen confused me soo much. You know if Community season 5 had chosen this to do an episode about this instead of what they did, I would have loved it and it would have provided some much needed clarification for childhood me.
