https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/13/us/duke-lacrosse-accusations-crystal-mangum/index.html

Crystal Mangum, the former exotic dancer who accused three Duke mens lacrosse players of rape in 2006, igniting a national firestorm, now says she lied about the encounter.

I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didnt, and that was wrong. And I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believed in me, Mangum said on the web show Lets Talk with Kat, hosted by Katerena DePasquale.

The interview took place at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, where Mangum is serving time for a 2013 second-degree murder conviction for stabbing her boyfriend.

I made up a story that wasnt true because I wanted validation from people and not from God, Mangum said.

On the podcast, she said she hopes the three men will forgive her.

I want them to know that I love them, and they didnt deserve that, and I hope that they can forgive me, she said.

Mangums admission comes nearly two decades after she said she was raped by former players David Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann.

The younger brother of a girl I was friends with in High School was on that Duke team, and I remember talking to him about it about a year after. He wasn't at the party, but obviously knew the three guys that were accused and insisted that they did nothing wrong.

No. The case itself was an absolute mess, with the woman changing the story multiple times. Now 20 years later we know why.

Not before these kids were put though hell for a year-plus, and it also cost the coach his job.

The three were arrested following the womans allegations of sexual assault at a party.

The charges brought broad media attention, forced the cancellation of the teams 2006 season, and cost coach Mike Pressler his job. The district attorney on the case was convicted of criminal contempt and disbarred.

In April 2007, the states then-Attorney General Roy Cooper, who is now governor, reviewed the case and exonerated the three men, declaring that the charges never should have been brought against them.

Duke University and the three players reached an undisclosed settlement shortly after the charges were dropped.

The city of Durham settled a lawsuit by the three men in 2014. As part of the settlement, Durham agreed to pay $50,000 to the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission.

I'd think so, should the state decide to pursue it.

I think the statute of limitations on that is 5 years on a federal level, but I don't know if there are differences between states.

Utterly deplorable. Damaging the lives of the accused, their teammates, the coach, and further fueling skepticism of legitimate cases of sexual assault. I'd say lock her up, but...

I think the statute of limitations on that is 5 years on a federal level, but I don't know if there are differences between states.

Just read in a different article that it's 2 years in North Carolina.

This article has a lot more info than the CNN article:

https://www.dukechronicle.com/article/2024/12/duke-mens-lacrosse-scandal-2006-crystal-mangum- admits-fabrication-rape-18-years-later-apologizes-kat-depasquale-evans-finnerty-seligmann-brodhead-pressler-nifong

Then-N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper did not prosecute Mangum for perjury after the case was dismissed, saying at the time that the investigators thought she may have actually believed the many different stories that she has been telling. The statute of limitations on perjury charges typically lasts two years in North Carolina law, meaning that Mangum can no longer be prosecuted for lying under oath.

Oregon perjury seems to be 2-3 years for statute of limitations. Based on a quick Google and nothing else.
