Are you not pushing in the clutch when you come to a stop? You want to be in neutral if you're not moving.

I'd argue that if you're stalling the car every time you come to a stop that you don't actually know how to drive a manual.

All these years, I've come to realize something. Based on every person I know, real human interactions and relationships. The ones who want to learn anything, no matter how small or how useful or not useful it is- their curiosity to learn or better themselves with knowledge... these people tend to be or are already successful. The ones who are proud to not know anything or are proud to not want to learn anything at all... these people tend to be unsuccessful.

I don't know anyone who still thinks that, but I'm sure such people exist.

I know a lot of people who prefer manuals because they say they prefer the driving experience, but I've never really understood that if the majority of their driving is just stop start traffic.

Mostly I think it's just economics and circumstance. You go to a car dealership, most cars are manual. You have more choice that way. Maybe they're cheaper to build and service.

Personally I prefer automatics, but one thing that does strike me as funny is when a certain breed of American acts like driving "stick" is like some cool skill that only real men know how to do.

All plug in hybrids and EVs are automatic, so manuals might end up just being a thing for specialist sports and 'track day' cars.

I've driven a manual all my life, but switched to automatic when I bought my PHEV. Won't deny it's a lot easier to drive, but still kind of miss the physical experience of manual. (And my left hand does still go to the gear shift at junctions).

I mean the simple answer is that you were never taught... Like me. I never learned manual because no one ever taught me. Crazy too because both my parents knew how to do it but never bothered to teach me. So now I don't know how. I guess I could look it up and learn. I doubt it's that complicated. It isn't like I have no idea how it works.

I mean as long as you can audibly hear the car going into high revs, shifting gears isnt so bad, particularly if youre doing some slow speed driving because then you would only need to worry about going from 2-4 gear most of the time. Then when you hit a hill you down shift into 3rd gear to maintain speed.

then again the last car I drove was a 1980s Cadillac and that car was like driving a portable tank that handles like a M1 Abrams driving off road on a rainy day.

nowadays I drive a motorcycle!

Only thing to dislike about a manual car is the bullshit traffic you have to exist in, particularly on hills where people take the liberties to drive and park really close, and abruptly stop and go - all behaviors that are just as stupid on flat land, but on a hill you're legit burdening your clutch and have a tight margin of error.

I am of the belief that if everyone drove manual, thed probably be more focused on actually driving their 3000+lb hunks of metal.

There's an insane amount of coordination incompetence that people turn a blind eye to and are coddled on top of it. They made themselves into obsolete components of a machine associated society.

in America, not many. even many sports cars over here don't have the option for a stick. that's one reason i bought a new Integra even though i don't need a new car -- i really wanted to get a stick while the option was there
