Compared to years past.
I passed through that mall and literally nothing changed - no screaming discounts or inventory.
What's the point of stuff?
Why so late?
Did we lose the value of Christmas?
It's just stuff. Stuff is so disposable. It's stupid.

"whew, I just managed to find some crap to give people with a few hours to spare!"

Like if I want to give someone something, I'd be thinking hard about it for a good minute and odds are it might not be available at the mall in the first place.

The value of Christmas has been lost ever since we've become a capitalistic society.

Also various strikes might also have to do with malls being busier.

false

Capitalism invented Christmas

it is not a real religious holiday as before the industrial age it was just an excuse to get drunk and act like a thug, and actual literal thug

after the industrial revolution happened the capitalists wanted to sanitize the holiday and make it family friendly because acting like a thug while drunk wasn't very family friendly

so they invented the holiday we today know as Christmas which also btw has nothing to do with the actual birth of Christ other than during the sanitization a suggestion that the nativity sorta be tied to it

My local mall is still really busy and popular, and I am staying far away from it this time of year.

the amazon strike probably had a bigger effect than they want to let on

all the stuff I ordered back on tuesday that was supposed to be here by sunday at the latest got delayed until Dec 27 - January. I canceled those orders, but reordered one thing that will arrive on the 24th. So all the delays caused enough people to cancel orders/not place them at all, that my delivery estimate got moved forward.

I was forced to go to Target yesterday to get other stuff, and even Target's shelves were basically picked clean of all the popular toys

https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/call-me-2021-s-christmas-grinch-holiday-needs-rebrand-ncna1286500

So what happened? In 19th-century America, Christmas transformed from an observance of social inversion to one of familial inversion. Thats because the feeding and watering of workers got out of hand. When Puritans took the reins in 17th-century England, there was so much Christmas drinking that they banned it when they came to power; across the pond, celebrating Christmas was illegal in Massachusetts from 1659 to 1681.

In post-industrial America, things got worse. Bosses didnt live among workers, or even necessarily know them. Drunken laborers turned into marauding gangs of strangers; the upper crust couldnt manage crowd control.

And so Christmas as we know it today was rebranded as a family holiday. Seen-but-not-heard kids would be given gifts, and appointed the unlikely stars of that one day.

his new narrative was promoted in the press and propagated by writers like Washington Irving and Charles Dickens. In 1840, the German tradition of decorating evergreen trees was imported to England, then to the states courtesy of a widely publicized 1848 image of the royal family before their Christmas tree. Finally, in 1870, Christmas was declared a federal holiday. The full-on commercialism of Christmas soon followed, and manufactured goods began to replace handmade ones. The Santa Claus character we know today a jolly fellow in a red suit, rather than the European saint who had no relation to Christmas or Jesus was popularized in a 1931 Coca-Cola ad.

Some people just procrastinate man. Not sure why you're making it something to be so hateful about lol. I've got a gift for my grandmother that's scheduled to arrive tomorrow, the 22nd. It being last minute doesn't mean I didn't put thought into it.

I think grandma would've been perfectly cool if the gift came a bit late. She may even be all dandy without anything. Does grandma really need more stuff? I mean I could understand if it's something like a massage chair or sum, but I think above all else grandma just wants to see you.

Nah, my grandmother sees me all the time. We live in the same city.

But Christmas is her favorite holiday and years ago she made a big deal about how I was the only grandkid that got her a gift that year. So I've made it a point to get her at least a little something every year since then. I'm on a roll, can't disappoint granny now.
