The combo of Companion and Heart Eyes to start out the year has got to be one of the strongest starts for the genre in recent memory for me. Both S-tier hits in my book. Heart Eyes if a lot more of a traditional horror film, especially if you like the style of something like Happy Death Day. Still carries some unique qualities to it though, just about as good as you can get at a holiday themed horror film.

Heart Eyes was a ton of fun! It's Scream meets romcom! I had a really fun time watching this and the characters in this one were great, even the minor ones. I really, really enjoyed this one and I can honestly see them making a fun little series out of it if it does well. Give me more fun, creative horror movies like this and Companion.

One of our local theaters can always be relied on to pick up most Asian horror films that are getting any sort of theatrical play in the US, so we were able to see Dark Nuns today. It's an exorcism film, though it leans much more towards thriller/drama than over the top demons and gore. There are just a handful of grisly scenes sprinkled throughout.

I will say, unfortunately, this film is no Exhuma from last year. Korean horror, which this one also is, can be a little hit and miss I think. For my personal tastes, I thought it was a little too slow and plodding for me. It's not a bad movie or anything like that, and the actors do a good job, but given how the film is structured I just couldn't quite get into it. There are times where it was able to capture my attention, but ultimately I felt it had some issues with pacing. It explains some stuff too much, and other things not enough.

But it could honestly be a cultural thing too. If you like a slow-moving demonic possession film, this one could be for you. It's well-made in terms of how it looks certainly.

Two October Marathons ago, I had reviewed Season 1 of School Spirits. Then I said it was relatively light on the horror and left it in a fascinating place at the end of the season.

Season 2 is halfway done and I can say I'm very pleased with it! There's a ton more horror and mystery. Legitimately chilling stuff going on. Haunting scenes they manage to create. I'm really enjoying how this is playing out.

I think it's one of three horror movies to have done that, including Terrified 2 and Scream 1.

Good! Heart Eyes was great! They obviously weren't sure they could compete with the MCU but hey. Horror is back babyyyy

So after seeing it, I felt personally it was a little bit better than Longlegs. I know to some that might sound like blasphemy, Genny was pretty surprised by my opinion there, but I know some of the regulars in here were also a little bit divided on Longlegs too. I feel like with Longlegs I was led to believe I was about to watch a film that didn't end up being what I actually watched, but with The Monkey you can rest assured you know exactly that movie you're going to see.

I'm still not completely sure what letter grade I'd give this movie, but it's another very strong film to open the year for sure. There's a good mix of over the top silly kills along with a surprisingly likable main character's life drama. But this is another case where I feel like label of "horror comedy" is being a bit misused and overreaching. To mean, a horror comedy is a very specific subgenre. You wouldn't sit this movie alongside Scary Movie for example, which I think is like a stalwart of horror comedy. This is just a non-serious horror movie that has fun with its material, at least that's how I view it.

Just a few spoiler notes for when other people see it: I think my favorite overall kill was with the wasp nest, very over-the-top and I loved the effects on the body after the fact, really gnarly. What surprised me the most about this movie was Hal's relationship with his son though; I never read or had any knowledge of the original Stephen King work so I don't know how faithful all of this is to that, but I really enjoyed that father/son chemistry and watching Hal struggle to keep his son safe while forcing him to be distant at the same time. Also didn't realize Bill was going to be the villain here, as detestable as he was I figured it would be a family affair fighting off the entity.

If anyone sees this message before going to the movie, don't leave right away because there is something at the very end of the credits I wouldn't want to miss.

Oh, and the night before last we watched the new Shudder original The Dead Thing (85% on RT also). It's pretty solid, feels very original in terms of plot (and this coming from the guy who watches hundreds of horrors a year). The brief synopsis is that the main character is a woman named Alex, and she's addicted to this dating app. It's more of a "hook up" app though, since she's just looking for the score at the end of the night. But she can't seem to find happiness or fulfillment through any of these guys, until she meets this particular one. Before she had been ghosting people who were interested in seeing her again, but this time she is the one who is ghosted and left wondering why as she begins to uncover just why this guy that seemingly connected so well with her is no longer responding.

Honestly, it's a really dark and depressing affair of a film but it's very well made and generally pretty well acted. It's another one I'd give a solid recommend to.

The Monkey was a complete blast. Laughed a ton. Somehow always kept getting surprised by how over the top it was. Just a really really enjoyable time for a short little horror comedy. I hope Osgood Perkins keeps making more of these, along with his absolutely dark and dreadful films.

I don't feel the need to not spoil it since it doesn't really impact the film at all, but the trailer for his next horror movie is after the credits. It looks so damn good. Tatiana Maslany is set to star in it too and I'm in awe of how mystifying the trailer was. So definitely stick around to watch that after.

But go see The Monkey for an outrageously fun time!

With no major horror releases in theaters now until Locked in March (from what I can see on the schedule anyway), we'll probably be settling in to watch a handful of random selections from streaming now. I've made a rather large list of things available on Prime, most of it very uh... shoddy looking in nature, but you never know what you'll find looking around there.

Tonight we watched Members Club, which is technically from last year but it's only recently available as of this year stateside (British in origin). It's about an older middle aged group of male strippers out for one last gig, and of course that's where the horror takes place. It's a horror comedy, obviously given the subject matter. The group travels to what they believe to be a show, but it's a setup to summon up a witch by sacrificing 4 men... specifically by taking their penises. If you're looking for a fun B movie sort of experience, this one does a surprisingly good job. I hadn't even heard of this movie until a few hours ago and Genny ended up selecting it from the list I had made. I did have to switch on the subtitles here though, because a few of the actors are quite British indeed. But it's a fun time, definitely a better experience than our last find on Prime.

Tickets for the one day theatrical release of I Heart Willie tonight. It'll be the first Mickey Mouse horror movie we've seen so far; I think there was one late last year, but I neglected it in favor of other stuff I wanted to squeeze in. I think Screamboat comes out in April, probably in a similar small theatrical release fashion. I don't think any of these movies are related to the larger "Twisted Childhood" universe by the Blood & Honey team. What a time to be alive.

Over the last few nights we've watched a few more streaming films:

Are You There?: A film with a similar vibe as the great "Talk To Me" from 2023, but obviously it doesn't quite live up to those highs. It starts out well enough, and throughout I feel it has good production values and a quality look/sound to it. Never feels too low budget in a way you can tell. The general plot revolves around the main character and a summoning candle gifted to her by her grandmother, which she can use to speak to her after she passes away, but you have to be careful of course because if you don't follow the rules who knows what spirit the candle might summon. Sadly the last act of the film destroys any good will it builds because nothing is real! A difficult trope to pull off, and this wasn't it. Everything that has happened so far in the movie is totally tossed because rather than being a psychology student, our main character is actually the one in the asylum. Characters she imagined are either non-existent or fulfill different roles in the hospital. And it just sort of ends, no resolution. And the candle, the driving force of the horror elements of the film, apparently just never existed either. It's a shame because with better writing they probably had something theater ready here.

Inhabitants: This one follows a couple who have recently moved in together but they begin to be haunted by a presence from one of their pasts. Specifically, it's a vengeful spirit of a youth group pastor. This is one of those decent movies that's okay, never really offensive but it probably won't hold a large place in my memory banks either. I will say that it's difficult to really fault the ghost in this case. Even if you are not religious, and I certainly qualify and definitely don't care if two people are living together and sexing out of wedlock, his motive for haunting the guy is... pretty justified really. I mean he dies trying to save the guy from a fire, and the guy he was saving is not actually there because he's off having premarital sex instead. Not only that, he started the fire by accident and was too horny to stop and check the space heater he kicked over on his way sneaking out. It's okay, has some decent spooks and the actors do a decent job.

Yeah uh... just yikes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWMFTfaJaWM

It'll take some work to dethrone I Heart Willie as my choice for the worst horror film of 2025. What a steaming pile of unwashed asses. I mean outside of the costuming for Willie, there is absolutely no saving graces to be found in this movie. The actors are just awful; I feel bad for the guy who played Willie because apparently he's the same dude who voices Chris Redfield now (he has virtually no lines outside of one). The script, a truly horrendous piece of dogshit. Just abominable. I legitimately feel bad for Disney here; to have their IP just totally shit on like this. I mean this movie manages to make the original Blood and Honey look like it's a passable movie. The movie was, mercifully, not the near 2 hours it was advertised as but actually just under 90 minutes. For some reason, once the movie ends (complete with an end credit scene because WHY NOT) the director really thought he was making Terrifier because there's a behind the scenes vignette! I mean are you serious; no one but us even made it to him saying that, and we promptly left after one line about how this movie was shot over 10 days in the mountains of Mexico. I wish this guy would go back there and never return.

Only Skinamarink compares with this theater experience for me. One of the worst things I've ever seen in public.

The Bayou: We decided to steam another of these Prime movies after we got home to wash away the filth. As you might suspect, this is an alligator horror movie. It's okay. I'm not sure if it's because IHW was so terrible and the characters so shitty, but I found myself easily drawn to the cast of this movie. There is one terrible character, but it's on purpose, not like with IHW. It doesn't do a whole lot new or interesting, but it's a competent experience I personally desperately needed after being tortured like that.

Two more streaming films we picked out on a mini-vacation (neither very good at all unfortunately):

The Demoness: There was promise in the premise; 4 couples visit a remote island where they will receive what amounts to couples therapy in the form of various challenges. Unfortunately, that's kinda where anything good about this movie ends. The acting is pretty laughable outside of one or two of the characters, and it's especially bad in the case of the males in this film. Even after having watched it, I could really only tell you much about one of the characters because they just blend in so seamlessly together into a blob of nothingness. There's a lot of convoluted twists and turns with the main character that makes you question if anyone could really be that dumb the main character isn't actually herself, but rather her twin sister who switched places with her... her boyfriend was none the wiser and never was up until he died. Just not good stuff.

Rounding: This is more of a psychological drama about a doctor and his struggles with his job. It had the potential to be engaging, and it's acted decently enough. The problem is really the script, which is all over the place. There are plot points introduced and never resolved, and I feel the overwhelming feeling I had at the end of this film was "what did I just watch?". There was clearly some amount of effort put into this, and I do think some sort of artistic vision is here, but it's not very well explained and just fails to come together.

David Arquette is confirmed for Scream 7 now as well.

Must be about to see a ton of callbacks and/or flashbacks and/or references to the previous films, especially the original trilogy I guess. I'm not sure how I feel about that honestly. Ulrich's specter was one thing, but this seems almost overkill (as much as I love all the characters and people confirmed).

Yeah the puzzles were definitely devilish, but so satisfying once you work out the solution. Yeah I agree about the combat, simple but effective!

Just finished School Spirits Season 2!

As a summary, the show in general is about a girl who dies in her school and is a ghost, and her best friend can see her and they try to figure out who killed her. It ends in a pretty huge twist, and Season 2 is pretty much everything I ever wanted from the show.

Where Season 1 was a lot of just ghost brooding and drama without much scares (except one episode that's quite chilling), Season 2 has so much more of it. There's a lot of legitimately well done horror scenes, haunting memories they all have, and some unsettling interactions with characters. It's such a marked improvement over the first season, which I liked, to this where I thought it was awesome.

If the concept interests you, check it out! Season 1 blew up on Netflix before season 2 came out, so Paramount may actually give us a season 3 here!

I've also been watching Yellowjackets Season 3. And it's honestly extremely frustrating and dreadful. For every scene that is fun, enjoyable, or intriguing in this season, there's a scene that is just maddeningly baffling or frustrating or just makes you angry. It's such a strange, strange division. I'm hoping they somehow pull this season off, but I'm just approaching the point where I'm fed up.

We watched a movie called Bystanders a few days ago. It falls into the genre of "reverse horror" stylings, as in the villains of the film end up being the victims as they're hunted by the "good guys". It's a really formulaic story; teen girls are lured to a college style party where they're drugged and assaulted but these guys also happen to be killers as well so they do a hunting style game after they've had their way with them. One girl makes it to the road and signals help, which is where the movie actually begins. The help in this case happens to be a pair of do-good serial killers who like hunting down the scourge of society. Honestly the film is probably at its best when you're waiting for them to reveal that fact to them. I feel like some of the characters here are written as far too one note; like motives and backstories seem overly cliche at times. Like if you were asked to give an underlying reason why someone turns out the way they do in this movie, then that's probably the answer they go with. That said, I do like the actors and think they bring a certain amount of charm to the bare bones stuff they're given. This wasn't a bad experience, and a lot more engaging than the last couple of straight to stream titles I've seen.

The Rule of Jenny Pen was truly a wild experience. This stars acting legends battling each other in a retirement home and features a lot of the fears and worries about getting older. The acting here is obviously top notch, and I had to at times stop and tell myself that the people in this film weren't actually the characters they were portraying because it became so easy to believe that. Of course, places like this really exist and some people when they reach a certain age don't hold up as well as others might. The hand you're dealt in that can hinge on a lot of factors, and much of the terror here is realizing there's nothing you can do to change or stop it. Geoffrey Rush is someone I'm obviously a fan of given how much I love PotC, and he brings his aura and gravitas to his role as a proud judge who suffers a debilitating stroke that brings on the latter stage of his life. He finds himself confined to a wheelchair and placed into an assisted living facility, which is full of people who are mostly a bit more far gone than he is when he first enters. His initial reaction to this and the way his character progresses are very well done, and though this movie isn't without a few flaws, I think it's propped up a lot by the performances of Rush and the rest of the cast.

Speaking of which... I did not foresee coming into this year and proclaiming that John Lithgow was going to be portraying one of the most interesting and unhinged villains I've seen in a horror movie recently. I feel like his character is going to fly under the radar here unfortunately, but with all the hype and praise for Nic Cage last year as Longlegs, people really need to experience Lithgow in this one. He's so unhinged and insane, just a phenomenal performance really. Again I don't think this is the best film of the year, even at this early stage, but the best parts of this movie are the actors. As much as I love Geoffrey Rush, John Lithgow really steals the show here. I'd have never guessed it.

Most of the rest of the cast besides these two household names are New Zealanders, since this film was shot there and mostly uses local actors. They're all really good though, especially George Henare as Rush's roommate. He really deserves to be mentioned as well so I thought I would. But yeah, this is good stuff. It's definitely a little weird and there are a few times where the pacing gets weird, but it's definitely worth a watch regardless of that.

Saw The Monkey tonight and I think it was a little overhyped

I had fun with it, and the creative kills were like what Final Destination wanted to be. Also loved Tatiana Maslany here and wish she had a bigger role

But I don't think Osgood Perkins is a very good writer and I think he tries to cover up for that by just having the movie be very weird so that the audience doesn't question it too much when dialogue sounds like it's coming from an alien who doesn't fully understand human speech. It's like M Night's understanding of human behavior

The high points are great, with some super funny scenes and some great gore effects, but I also struggled to stay awake through thr last ~1/3 of the movie

Well, if you have no plans to see it at all the doll is pretty much implied to just be an extension of Dave Crealy's psyche; it's more than likely not an entity or alive in any way. There are still some scary doll scenes here and there, but not that much honestly.

We watched a free streaming film on Prime called The Yorkie Werewolf. It was one of the first streaming releases of the year on Prime, but after a few months now it's free so yay, glad I saved a couple of bucks by just waiting it out.

It's decent, funny if you are in the mood for a comedy horror. It's a pretty short film clocking in at just 73 minutes long and is about a teenage witch that gets transformed in a tiny werewolf, then teams up with a vampire to battle the Mafia. It's not a movie that's meant to be or ever takes itself seriously. It has a few fun bits here and there, and the villains are way over the top Italian Americans. The drawback for me is the main character is not at all likable and just never really grows throughout the film. It's at its best when she's transformed, because they use a different actor (an actual person of short stature that has a large body of work as a voice actress) and she just makes the character way more likable than the other girl does. That said, it's fine for what it is. Entertaining mindless fun for a short while.

Heading to see Opus in a couple of hours. I know nothing about this film; I've never even seen a trailer for it which has got to be a first in a while for me in terms of a theatrically released movie. It failed to even outgross Mufasa in its 13th week and fell outside the top 10; it's even an A24 distributed film but I feel like marketing for it was terrible. Doesn't have great reviews either, but we'll see I guess.

Surprisingly, I found this to be a really great movie. It has a couple of issues but the reviews I've read overblow a specific issue a bit too much that most of the supporting characters lack depth or characterization. Honestly, it's a shame they failed to market this film at all. Just a few quick bits of John Malkovich acting quirky couple have brought in some more viewers I think. But yeah, this was actually something I quite liked.

Ayo Edebiri plays the lead role with Malkovich also starring as the subject of the film. A mysterious and reclusive pop icon from the 90's (in universe basically the equivalent of Michael Jackson in terms of his notoriety and success) comes out of a reclusive life after 30 years to release a new album, and invites several different reporters to his isolated compound for a special listen to it as well as a host of other... uh, strange things. It's essentially a cult of personality film, but of course the cult part is quite literal and that becomes obvious from very early on. I could see where some people might say this drags a bit in the front half, and maybe sure they could have spent more time on some of the other characters but I also liked the fact we spent as much time as we did with the main character as well. Much like I felt about Lithgow's performance in Jenny Pen, again an older actor really brings out the weird and unhinged insanity of the villain.

I feel it's worth checking out, if it's been picked up by your local theater. There's a lot of unsettling and tense moments where I recoiled a bit, and even a few surprises. Given the mixed reception it has and the fact A24 did fuck all to market it, this might not be for everyone, but I personally had a good time.

Locked and Ash both have Fresh ratings from RT, though not the strongest ones. Should be seeing them on Sunday and Monday from the looks of things right now.

So we were able to catch Popeye the Slayer Man in a theatrical showing last night; I knew this film had come out on streaming, but I didn't know it was receiving any sort of run in theaters. Apparently, it's pretty limited but somehow where Genny works actually picked it up and nowhere else around here did. Heard this only about 30 minutes before showtime, but we made it.

And you know what, to sort of paraphrase Popeye, "it is what it is". That is to say, you know what you might can expect from one of these B horror movies featuring a public domain cartoon character. You're never going to get an elite film... however, you can get one that's fun and competent. This is the third of this genre we've seen this year and you have the decently passable Peter Pan film on one end and the horrendously terrible I Heart Willie on the other. This one is just about on part with the former thankfully. I was pretty surprised, mostly because I Heart Willie wasn't that long ago and I was a bit scared this might be on that level.

This is apparently the second Popeye horror movie of the year so far, not sure about watching the first yet because it's a ridiculous price to stream right now and I won't be paying for that. But anyway in this film, Popeye is converted into a sort of urban legend about a sailor who kills people while patrolling the docks "looking for something". A typical sort of set up ensues as the main characters want to make an indie documentary on the legend before the town tears down the decommissioned spinach canning plant. The things I liked about this movie was the overall level of quality it portrayed in terms of the people who worked on this actually knew how to make a movie, which was a huge problem in I Heart Willie. The actors here were almost all pretty good, and the direction also seemed to be as good as it could be for a film with a plot like this one. That said though, this movie showed a surprisingly amount of heart. Unlike I Heart Willie, Popeye was treated with respect here. He wasn't just some mindless monster, they made him likable while still keeping him as the central figure to fear for most of the film. I noticed after some time that he seemed to only kill people that were actually not particularly savory, or ones he deemed as threats to his home. Creating these sorts of movies can be 'fun', but this was the first I've watched that actually keep the character as not truly a villain, but rather one you can still root for and not in the sadistic sort of way. This was probably my favorite part of this and a reason why I did like it so much, it was a refreshing change of pace not to just have the beloved figure be some freakish monster with no soul.

But yeah, color me impressed and surprised by this one. Hard to believe it, but I consider 2 of the 3 public doman horrors of 2025 above average now.

Locked was a lot of fun. Apparently, much like Speak No Evil this was a remake of another film from the fairly decent past. Specifically, a movie called 4x4 of Argentinian origin. I imagine most have seen the trailer leading up to this by now, but the synopsis is that a struggling petty thief gets into a car to steal whatever he can but ends up walking into an elaborate trap laid by a vengeful psychopath. He then begins to receive physical and psychological torture as the plot unfolds.

It's a pretty simple movie that places almost all of its weight behind the actors involved, especially Bill Skarsgrd in this case. Even if this isn't the deepest film, I'm always amazed with just how fantastic of an actor Skarsgrd is, just such a great depth and range to his ability. Anthony Hopkins portrays basically the only other character in the movie, and spends most of that time providing voice acting only. But the banter they share and the time they do get to spend physically is all very well done, good chemistry between them for sure. I was surprised at the smaller release this one got considering the name value these two should have, but even less screens were given to it than were given to Ash for this weekend.

Yeah, this is also probably Tony Todd's final on-screen roll so hopefully this film is at least halfway decent.

We watched Ash in theaters last night; very good quality sci-fi horror, at least in my opinion. You can definitely see inspiration from
Alien and The Thing based on how the story goes.
You're thrown in pretty quickly to this world and most of the film is a slow burn reveal of what exactly happened before the film begins, since the main character has no recollection of it at first. Eiza Gonzlez commands a lot of attention with an enchanting performance as the main character Riya. This is another tight-knit film in terms of casting, so the strength of movie rests upon the few people that get decent amounts of screen time (which is really just 2). There are also some really cool special effects, especially late in the film. Be prepared for a bit of storytelling if you do watch it, it doesn't punch super hard until the final act really but I enjoyed the buildup.

Seeing Death of a Unicorn tomorrow at midnight.

I watched Strange Darling on Showtime finally.

God, that has to be one of the best movies that came out last year, in a year with so many outstanding horror movies. A phenomenal movie, from start to finish. Just utterly intriguing. Kyle Gallner and Willa Fitzgerald just do a masterful job here. Just everything about this movie is so good and I was hooked from start to finish. Huge recommend for this one. Go out of your way to watch it.

I'm glad to see the Strange Darling appreciation. It sat amongst my S tiers from last year even though it didn't take the cake, and I'm sad it didn't gain the same word of mouth traction as something like Late Night with the Devil or even In a Violent Nature. While I appreciated them both, I personally enjoyed it much more than the latter.
