I would find that shit hilarious. Trump would likely force the government to fund the statue of America's greatness which is a giant statue of himself in it's place.

It was a gift.

I'd say that it makes sense that France would want it back, given that the US chose to reject everything that statue stands for. If anything, we should replace it with a giant replica of Rodin's The Gates of Hell, and "The New Colossus" with the opening lines of the third canto from Dante Alighieri's Inferno (the lines in question being those inscribed upon the gate to Hell in Dante's poem, which famously end with "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here").

Trump, on the other hand, would be pissy about it and either tell the French to go fuck themselves, or order that it be torn down and replaced with a statue glorifying himself (constructed from the materials that once made up the Statue of Liberty, if possible; if not, then the remnants of the statue would be destroyed). Either way, though, he'd have no intention of giving Lady Liberty back to France.

Why would they?

Hope they kept the receipts.
