Don't let Trump ascending to destroy as much of the US as he can distract you from the fact that the world is now surpassing even the very worst projections of climate change, as the numbers for 2024 are in and the year spent so much time between 1.55C and 1.62C that the entire year was regarded as passing 1.6C of warming. This means that between 2023 and 2025 the average has been around 0.1+C of warming. Now I doubt you need to be a mathematician to be able to add a 5 to that 6 and quickly realize the world is on track to reach 2.0C by 2030 at the latest. For those who don't really understand what hitting 2 degrees means I'll keep it simple. You know all those doomsday tipping points? The Amazon rainforest becoming a carbon emitter because of it dying so much, the icecaps irreversibly melting and ultimately losing their ability to form ice (superheating the oceans in the process), vast swathes of the planet losing its ability to sustain human life in any capacity (and causing mass migration)? Yeah, once we hit 2 degrees of warming that is all locked in and irreversible and starts to very visibly happen. We've hit the scary part of the exponential warming timeline. The Paris Agreement is dead and by 2050 we all have the extremely realistic possibility of being dead as well (coinflip whether it's better to be dead by then or in a slavecamp, those'll be the only two options for us plebs). Source for the claim about 1.5C being exceeded last year. The article came out in November however, December was so hot we actually ticked over to 1.6C. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/nov/18/climate-crisis-world-temperature-target --- Currently Playing: SaGa Emerald Beyond (Switch), Fate/stay night Remastered (Switch) ... Things are so catastrophically bad they won't even get that. Even if the rate of warming stops at a mere 0.1C degrees per year by 2050 the world will be 4.0C degrees. That's literal end-of-the-world-outside-minuscule-pockets-of-human-survivors levels of warming and it's a mere 25 years away at current rates (which are incorrect because things will continue to accelerate). And yes, it's highly likely that topics like this will become outright illegal in the not-distant future. The first step though is going to be the systematic gutting of scientific research and observation of climate change and its impacts and effects. --- Currently Playing: SaGa Emerald Beyond (Switch), Fate/stay night Remastered (Switch) ... Which is to say anyone who stands will stand alone and suffer the full wrath of the powers on high. This will continue to be the case until civilization itself deteriorates to such a point that the status quo itself is a harsher punishment than rejecting it. Unfortunately by that point the horse has bolted and lived out a full life in the wilderness. Anyone who makes any kind of move will spend the rest of their life rotting in jail. This is a large part of why I've been dooming since November. I had some hope that things could improve, but with Trump's victory and COP29 being an oil state circle jerk, it hammered home for me how humanity is now stuck on a downward spiral. Even if things turns around politically, it's going to be too little too late. It's not like the overwhelming majority of people (or even just the billionaires) are suddenly going to turn their lives around enough to bring about a change that couls stabilize the climate. I keep saying that we have to get off Earth, but nobody listens. No matter how much we slice it or develop better green tech, our numbers keep increasing, so any gain is lost by the newborns growing up and consuming resources. Moving off Earth allows us to consume the resources not from Earth (ie: Moon, Mars, asteroid belt, etc). And thus we stop depleting Earth. --- Think of it this way.
