Which is silly since they could just incorporate some of the US' numerous territories as states if they just wanted to do so.

It's inevitable that Trump will at least try to annex Canada. Whether he succeeds is a different story.

Well, you see that wouldn't even be noticable on a world map. Greenland or Canada would hence why Trump fantasizes so much. He wants to be known for another Louisiana or Alaska purchase.

Canada is a commonwealth country (that is still somehow sovereign; I don't understand the Canada Act), and annexing it would provoke some kind of military response from its monarch, one of America's closest allies.

Not that Trump ever cared about alienating ourselves from our allies or outright provoking them...

Canada is too large for the US to annex by force, and any attempt to do so would be ruinous for both countries.

It won't. That would be essentially World War 3 as Canada has no interest in being annexed, and an invasion by the US would set off so many defense pact treaties as to make it pointless to do so.

We're already heading to World War 3 this decade so this scenario would just confirm it.

PR is really the only one that would make sense, though I don't think enough people (either in or outside of PR) really want that. Most of my buddies in PR describe things as "not great", but they're confident things would get much worse if they elevated to state-hood.

Nah. That won' happen. As much as we are generally not nationalistic or patriotic, we take too much effort and pride in being not America. Canada isn't for sale, just our imports and exports.

Looking over a past conversation with one of my friends, it looks like they expect they'll inherit responsibility but not actually gain any real benefit. Too small to have a significant impact on the outcome of elections? That kind of deal, I think. They never went into detail about what that responsibility entailed, I assumed they expected taxes to increase.

Yeah and there's no way any other country would retaliate with their own nukes. Even if it's not a country directly nuked, neighboring countries may retaliate due to being too close to fallout zones.

We don't own Canada. Not any more, anyway. It's part of the Commonwealth and has Charles III as its head of state but that's it.

We outdo many countries in both size of people, and if you look at related links, combat vehicles, navy, etc. It would take NATO countries a large amount of time to mobilize properly overseas as they are not nearly as robust as the US is with military bases around the world. In this scenario, I imagine we are invading Canada (and by we, you can count me outta it), so it would really depend on how long the war would last before one side gives up as I doubt any country will actually be directly attack American soil for the same reason people do not want to go after Russian soil. Canada's population is barely bigger than Ukraine, and they'd be facing an adversary much larger than Russia currently is, which as well as Ukraine is doing, much of that is because the US and its allies are supplying them with equipment that they need to fight back.

The issue isn't that the rest of NATO doesn't have an economy/number of people to fight back, the issue is, Canada would suffer severely before NATO would be able to properly mobilize, and might give up before then depending on the US has a good strategy in the initial months.

Again, I'm not endorsing any invasions, and I don't really see the appeal of America invading allies just to stroke Trump's ego. If Canada wants to be a part of America, let them vote on it (I highly doubt they'd vote yes), and let us vote on it; we should be past the barbaric ways of grabbing land just because we can. They are our friends, not our enemies, many of which we talk to on this very social board. I would never want to go to war with my friends.
