There's a service called Pretendo Network that allows you to continue playing your Wii U and 3DS games online. It's legal, there's no piracy involved - it just tells games to look at a different server instead of Nintendo's shut down one. Nintendo isn't happy and would like you to pay for Switch online instead.

That's not really an 'instead' thing. Switch Online doesn't let you play Wii U or 3DS games online. Also most of the people using Pretendo Network are probably big enough Nintendo fans that they're paying for Switch Online anyway.

Yeah that's how i read it as well. A simple "we don't endorse doing this. If you point your console to a different server thats on you"

That was how I took it too. Nintendo has done its share of "no fun allowed" bullshit but this definitely feels like they're making an official statement that whatever happens is not their fault. They told you not to do it, and even told you why.

This is CYA for them. "If you get hacked or your hardware bricked, don't say we didn't warn you and don't attempt to get anything from us."

I haven't turned on my Wii U since like 2017. I probably should play around with homebrewing it hmm.

Well it could be bricked then. It's been in a bag I took to PAX East like 2017 and I never unpacked it when I got home lol.

Yeah, this is a "wiping hands" maneuver. Let's be honest; if Nintendo really wanted to go after this, they would have, or at least would be trying.

I want to preface by saying I don't blame some people with thinking that this is Nintendo trying to police what people do with discontinued hardware considering their history with fan works and other unauthorized stuff. That's an underlying fear I have with this too.

But legally I don't think they can do anything about it. They officially stopped supporting those consoles and shut down the online servers, meaning they can no longer get system updates. So I think it's just them putting out a warning against unofficial programs so that they can't get involved legally if something happens.

So from what I've read, the issue is mainly that the NAND chips degrade over time when not receiving power. Usually not an issue as it takes a long time. But Nintendo used several chip brands in their manufacturing and the rumor is that one specific brand, Hynix, degrades much faster than the others.

Yeah, it was reported on a while ago because certain components in the system aren't receiving power and end up losing their memory.

Why should they? They want people playing on their current product the Switch. Hell, nearly all of Wii U's worthwhile games have already been ported to the Switch or got direct sequels.

This just makes me ever more happier that I jailbroke my Wii, Wii U, and 3DS.

Yup, with the Wii U long discontinued Nintendo isnt making a cent off of it. Theyd much rather just forget it exists.

They would have to completely change the fundamental gameplay of Star Fox Zero to port it. The game was completely reliant on using both the GamePad and the TV together.
