Pretty sure it's a comedy bit. And being a vocal radical leftist in China is one of the things you can actually get in trouble for. Even trying to organize a labor union can get you in trouble. You can criticize the US, but if you start talking about Chinese workers needing to rise up, you're going to be getting deleted posts and possibly asked to go to the police station for a talk.

Daf** is rednote?

I don't think TikTok radicalized anyone nor was it particularly egregious?

Like, there is no goddamn way it was anymore harmful to society than anything else. We didn't ban FaceBook when they allowed for disinformation and gore, we didn't ban telegram even though it probably have more trading of illegal content than the dark web, we didn't ban Twitter after "cancel culture".

We didn't ban GFAQs after that psycho burned down a church.

The security issue with Chinese government more or less monitoring it and controlling it I get. That is absolutely a problem, especially with the rise of BRICS and the second cold war we are in right now.

But why TicTok specifically? Why not ban the thousands of online games under China's thumb?

It's not hard to live there if you're just a normal person. Like I never had any issues there but I didn't try to start trouble. But if you're an activist into movements and protests you're not going to do well. And you need to be prepared for a much more pro-landlord/corporation/business environment (yes even if you're from the US). As a foreigner you will probably have an okay paying job in a nice city, so as long as you just enjoy your life things will be pretty good. There is a lot of fun to have in China. But if you're an activist and want to be publicly political, it just isn't going to work out for you at all.

I see. For the most part I keep to myself and I'm not interested in becoming a politician, so I'd probably be fine in that regard.

I am very opinionated and not at all afraid of criticizing the government though, so that could be an issue I'm guessing.

Granted with the way America is headed, we'll see if I'm allowed to even do that here.

You can criticize the government, it just needs to be in a way that doesn't actually threaten them. Like in a private chat or just bitching about some local politician or whatever? No one cares. Saying publicly you think Xi should step down as president? You're going to get in trouble (though likely just restricted social media and a talk from the police, you need to really go all out to end up in jail; there's actually more people in jail in the US than China despite the huge population difference).

Can you tell me what the situation is like for social media? I heard Facebook is popular, but I assume they must have some way of dealing with political discussion on there? When I was there I was able to use Google and read news from Japan and the US. Are there major sites that are blocked?

Its not so much that sites are blocked, as you can be prosecuted for what you post and people are. As a foreigner, it can very easily lead to deportation, but if youre a somebody who they have a lot of instances of stuff that will piss them off or youre particularly high profile, youre looking at prison time.

They are laughing at people who are hysterical enough to think that kids are being becoming staunch supporters of the CCP after one day of using a social media app.

By that logic, the right's "Schools have litter boxes in the hallway" shit was true.

C'mon, now.

She took an absurd subject that isn't actually happening and made a comedy bit about it. That's literally all it is. If you can't figure that out, I think you need to take a break from the internet.

China doesn't claim to be communist. They claim they will begin implementing socialism in 2070 (used to be 2050). Almost no one in China believes this but they don't really care. It's pretty much just Western tankies that actually believe in and care about this.

The communist party doesn't claim to be doing communism currently. The argument for the current system is they need to do capitalism and have things like billionaires and no labor laws in order to build the infrastructure to implement socialism in the future. But no one really believes or cares about this in China. They just want a good economy so they can get more money to buy more things and show off their things to everyone else. Like most of the world, but a bit more extreme than most places.
