Hello all!

My latest single player gaming escapade is Dragon Quest 3! I did beat this as a phone release about.... 4-5 years ago? That being said I only really remember the big plot elements (especially the one everyone kinda knows about at this point) so it will be nice to play this again with the HD2D graphics and the remake pizzazz!

I decided to play on Draconic Difficulty since I have already played and beaten the game. Worst case scenario I get pissed off at some point and I turn the difficulty down, but so far not exactly too bad. I created 3 other characters, a Mage, a Priest, and a Monster Wrangler, since that is new, and I am off! I got the Thief's Key and have made my way over to the Spring to unlock the Teleporter.

So far Draconic hasn't been too bad at all. Yeah a little bit of grinding for levels and the slow trickle of gold is a bit annoying, but nothing I've never encountered before.

Monster Wrangler is awesome but is probably only worth using if you plan to fully unlock it's abilities.

With the sheer damage output it gets without even fully unlocking everything, it's just broken.

I mean, I don't know if I'm gonna min/max to an INSANE degree or anything, but I do wanna see everything the game has to offer, so I would wanna engage with some post game content. So I will likely guide at some point to make sure I'm making it possible to actually take on some elements of post game. LOL

Made it to Kanave or however it is spelled before calling it a night. The gold crunch is definitely real, though the combat still is not too bad thus far.

Haha, I spoke too soon. I decided to try and see if I could peel off somewhere else that is clearly a bit higher level than I am, and while I did end up finding some good equipment on the ground, three of my characters died. XD

Made my way to Norvik without dying at least, found the sleepy village there. Awww, a Faerie Princess and a Human fell in love and she took the Dreamstone and ran off with him. Norvik is now pretty much all asleep.

In the Faerie Village we find that the Faeries are prejudiced against all humans. Honestly Queen, I get it. We kinda suck. XD

Made my way to the Skyfell Tower and climbed to the top, finding the King's Crown along with Robbin' 'Ood! He DID get me with a quick little trap door... that dropped me a single floor down. Went back up, chased after him, and had my FIRST BOSS BATTLE! He was no match for my crew as we walloped him good!

I return to Romaria to return the Crown to the King and he OFFERS TO LET ME BE THE KING INSTEAD?!?? Sure, why not?! LOLZ! I popped a trophy for accepting his offer, but his Chancellor lets me know this is basically so the King can go off to watch the Monster Arena fights and the second I want to leave I should just go to the arena and tell him to be King again.

About to head out to the Desert to find the Magic Key, cause apparently this whole world is covered with multiple doors that only have ONE key that works with them that are often lost/stolen? That seems entirely inconvenient and really not the best option.

Current Status of my Team?

Hero - Level 13 Meathead
Mage - Level 13 Wit
Monster Wrangler - Level 13 Lone Wolf
Priest - Level 14 Genius

I would have included a Merchant in your party because they eventually get an ability which allows you to summon an item shop, inn or church at will. You can even use it in most dungeons which is super useful for replenishing your HP/MP.

Yeah, there's a point where you have the option to change classes.

Your character will go back to level 1 and your stats get reduced, but you keep any abilities/spells that you learned.

LOL!!! Ohhh god I love this game.

There are small catacombs under the Palace of Ibis. I go down there, grab a treasure from an ominously placed treasure chest. Meteorite Bracer! FANTASTIC! Some spirit pops out of a sarcophagus and is like, "WERE YOU THE ONE RANSACKING MY TOMB?!?" and I say Yes, yes I was. "AND WERE YOU THE ONE WHO RANSACKED MY PRECIOUS CHEST??!?!" and again... yes, yes I was.

Alrighty then, don't let me keep you.

LOL, love that the game will just randomly reward you for just telling the truth.

I braved the Pyramid and defeated the Ripper of the Rift! He mentioned something about the Boss Troll making short work of me, but bring it on bitch!

I haven't COMPLETELY explored it yet. Right after I beat the Ripper, my buddies wanted to hop on BG3 so my PS5 is sitting there in hibernation waiting for me to return.

I got the Golden Claws. How annoying.

Great game, but I was done with it by the time I got to the final boss. Didn't bother sticking around for the post game.

I'm pretty sure the 'curse' only lasts inside the Pyramid in later versions of the game. In the NES version it indeed 'worked everywhere'.

Yeah. Once you're out of the pyramid, the curse is broken.

I will keep them around, they do sell for a good amount if I need emergency gold.

I made my way to Portoga, and the King said he would give me his ship if I brought him Pepper from the "Eastern Lands" and gave me a letter to give to Nordby to let me pass through that little mine/tunnel.

Seems crazy to think an entire ship for some black pepper, but whatevs the dude can just be a crazy person, works for me.

People IRL went to war for spices. A ship is small beans compared to that.

Remake was great. Juat know it starts super easy and gets harder and harder

I'm on Draconian so I'm expecting it to be hard

Made my way over to Baharatra or whatever only to have the son of the dude with the precious Black Pepper take off to save his beloved in den of thieves! He begs me to go save his son and his I guess soon to be daughter in law? I head into the Thieves Hideout and wouldn't you know it, that lousy Robbin 'Ood is at it again! I beat his ass for a second time and he begs for his life like the sniveling coward he is. I just can't say no to a guy wanting to reform his ways, so I let him run like the coward he is, and Gopal and Tanaya are finally free to return home!

The Gupta's don't have any fuckin black pepper!??! They do send me however to... ALLTRADES ABBEY!!! Finally the Abbey! They have a trader here who should have the black pepper. How fun!

Now, if I remember correctly, as opposed to later DQ games, DQ3 isn't really designed for you to switch jobs too often. You maybe master like 2 different ones? And you have to get the stupid clown one to 20 to get a great vocation from that?

Multiple class changes is great for post game, but yeah, just changing once is fine for the story because you carry over skills and spells.

The Gadabout can change to Sage from level 20, but the tower north of Alltrades has an item that allows anyone to become a Sage once. There's only a few in the game, though (as well as a version of the item with infinite uses in the post game).

I'm around level 20 with my main classes, is it worth it to change now? Or should I power level up around 25-30 before thinking about it?

I returned to the King of Portoga and he is a man of his word. I brought him some pepper, and he gave me a fuckin ship! SHIP GET! Had myself a crazy dream that told me to seek out the orbs and to follow the righteous path to continue on my journey. Sounds like fun! Time to sail literally everywhere else, probably go to a high level area and get massacred. >_>

I traveled around and unlocked a bunch of different places, but I think the most important thing I'm doing right now is I bought some Fading Jenny's, cause they seem to make me invisible? That will let me sneak into Edina, since they are jerks and seem to turn away everyone. Jokes on you asshole, I'm gonna wander right on by you.

It depends. If you have a magic class you may want to keep them where they are until they learn every spell. I kept my priest until she learned Kazing then made her a monster wrangler. Generally the more people you have that can heal the better.

OH MY GOD THE BOTTOMLESS POT!!! I actually remember this part of the game. Such an odd way to get the fucking ULTIMATE KEY!

One orb was real easy to get in the original and in this remake it's super hard.

I got the Ultimate Key and wandered around to some other places randomly, fucking went to that city that has the spirits that are in the city at night only but that boss battle fucked me up. Also tried the one where you have to fight solo and that fucked me up.

Gonna go to Jipang and see if I can deal with Orochi? @_@

Urgh, I beat the first Orochi fight, but the second fight and that fucking Inferno is melting me.

Done! Fucking bitch, posing as the Queen of Jipang while actually being the dreaded Orochi!

I'm a little ahead of you. I beat Orochi and now I'm in Menoza trying to beat that boss battle. The Mirror of Ra was easy to get after I class changed a few of my guys. I haven't really found a scary dungeon yet, it's always the boss fights I have to prepare for. I mean, you basically have unlimited MP from all the items you get and multi hit attacks really mop up random encounters, especially Pile-On.

Oh and I beat the fight in Theddon on my second try after getting my ass handed to me. The key was my Monster Wrangler getting that boulder toss ability. Monster Pile-On is usually better but because of the way the spirits keep summoning friends having very wide and strong AoE attacks really helped me win. My Hero was around level 30 I think.

Got the Red Orb from the Pirate's Den, which was super easy.

I'm gonna go back to Theddon and try that one again. Draconian is pushing me pretty hard now.

Theddon is complete! Sheesh what a fucking AWFUL boss battle. I know Dragon Quest has ALWAYS done it where you attack a "group" rather than targeting an individual of that group, but for a fight like the Dying Flames and Phantasm's? Ugh

Yeah that spirit fight is what i was talking about. It didn't exist in the original, you just get the orb. Boss fight blew me away when I played.

I only ever played DQ3 on the NES, and I really enjoyed it. I'm tempted to get this game, but only when it's on sale, dangit.

Orochi phase 2 was the hardest boss for me.
