I've done a fair bit of travel around the world and seen how regular people eat in different societies. And short of how I'm sure some parts of the US must be, Scotland has to have one of the worst national diets in the world.

No, I'm not talking about whisky and haggis. Nobody fucking eats that except posh people.

I'm talking large swathes of the population of grown adults who literally cannot stomach a vegetable. Many that cannot do spices. If it's green or a grain they don't touch it. And if someone tried cooking something with some sense of pride they are socially deemed a tory wanker.

100% beige food. Frozen, fried beige things, loosely made out of potatoes and a thousand dead chickens' entrails. I literally know grown ass men and women that eat nothing but potato smileys, chicken nuggets, pot noodles and monster energy drink.

Pot noodles are maybe the worst example of cultural appropriation that exists, btw. Imagine everything you know and love about instant ramen, but there is no spices or vegetables or really anything except for a mild undertone of boiled mushroom juice and about 5 pieces of sweetcorn.

Awful country

Ah, so the last lamb you had was probably cooked Orlesian style. Food shouldn't be frilly and pretentious like that. Now here in Ferelden, we do things right. We take our ingredients, throw them into the largest pot we can find, and cook them for as long as possible until everything is a uniform grey color. As soon as it looks completely bland and unappetizing, that's when I know it's done.

It's either that or the other culinary method: in the oven at 180C for 20 minutes

Scotland has effectively two cultures: embarrassing highlander and edinburgh folk who are the kilt-wearing, haggis eating, poetry reading kind, and the other, which is everybody else. And that second lot are basically just trailer trash, except council subsidised apartments instead of trailers.

Edinburgh is a blast. If someone does a scotland trip, they should do two things with their time and money: go to edinburgh, and do a tour around the highlands, maybe stop off on an island. You can skip the rest of scotland. You'll have to look for too long and too hard to find something good.

Since I'm on one -

Today I saw a quintessential white scottish man at an indian street food stall ask if they have anything without onions in it. The poor Sikh man just looked confused, like someone has asked if they had any food without food in it

That's actually not weird. It's quite common for Indian places to have onion-free options because Jains and some Hindus don't eat onions.

It's a buddhist thing too.

Some Buddhists abstain from eating onions and garlic, as well as other pungent vegetables like chives, leeks, and shallots. This is because these foods are believed to stimulate strong emotions and desires, hindering spiritual development.

I try to eat a varied diet like fish, meat and pasta. The only green stuff I have is peas with either fish or mince & tatties. I do eat carrots & turnip when I have roasts as well as stovies.

I am Scottish, used to be a chef, have lived and worked all over the country in various levels from roadside cafes to fine dining restaurants and unfortunately TC is pretty much right. The majority of Scots have a fucking awful relationship with food, it's been hitting home recently after having first kid and seeing other parents feed 12 month old kids packets of crisps, pot noodles and sausage rolls. Absolute national disgrace to be fair, someone above mentioned the comparison to the Midwest and a better comparison might be Detroit, absolute post industrial hellscape, lack of hope etc.

It was children that inspired this topic actually. I see a lot of parents just don't even fucking try with their kids. Any resistance at all and they give in and concede to chips and mayonnaise for dinner again.

My partner has a 6 year old and I fight against this shit every day with him because he gets it at school. He wants mayonnaise on everything.

You know what he wanted on his ramen noodles today? Fucking mayonnaise.

I said he can add some mayonnaise if he first tries it with Soy sauce and sesame oil. Gee whiz, he liked it! Go figure.

I've taken it as a personal challenge to prove him wrong about food stuff.

He tells me that he doesn't like garlic because it's spicy.

"Yeah kid, but when you cook garlic for a long time its sweet. That's why you liked your pasta, which had 6 cloves of garlic in it."

Genuine look of stunned thoughtfulness on his face at that one. Some people say pettiness is a toxic trait but ive found a way to weaponise it for good...
