There are definitely bad female characters, and Im not saying people shouldnt complain about them. Plenty of them are poorly written. But even the ones that arent great tend to get way more hate than they deserve.

I started thinking about this because of Heavy Rain. The mother did nothing wrong she just asked Ethan to not let their other kid die, which is a pretty reasonable thing to say after losing one child. Meanwhile, Ethan is one of the worst dads in gaming who isnt an outright villain or from the Pokmon world and somehow shes the one people hate.

Ashley from Resident Evil 4. People acted like she was the most annoying character ever, but she really wasnt that bad. Yeah, she needed to be rescued sometimes.

The ultimate example is Skyler White. I watched Breaking Bad after the hype and expected her to be awful based on how much people hated her. But she wasnt. Walt was. The guy who named himself after a Nazi and murders people is obviously the worst, yet somehow Skyler was the one who got the most hate.

Figured this would come to Skyler eventually. I don't know what is about Skylar that everyone hated so much. I mean I definitely did not like her. And neither did my gf. But I don't seethe over her like some people. I didn't like Marie in Season 1 either, but I feel like she quickly turned around and became a good character. I disliked Hank more than Skyler though. He was so shitty to Marie.

It's interesting, if you ever delve into the "pop media writing critique" video essayist sphere, how scrutinized bad female characters are compared to males.

If a female character is bad, it's a result of pc/feminist/sjw/woke/dei culture. If a male character is bad, it's just bad.

Same people will insist that the "correct" way to make a female character is to just write an amorphous blob of personality that just happens to be female. (The anecdote about the casting for Ripley from Alien is always brought up as the standard.) If you reference anything that might actually be uniquely relevant to a woman's lived experience, it's politics and deleterious to the work. But then when works have characters that don't "need" to be female, they'll criticize the work for tokenism.

I think its a sign of lack of media literacy. A lot of people watched breaking bad because they liked seeing walter and jesse be drug lords and do crime. That was basically the extent of their interest in the show. Skylar was a barrier in the way and thats why they dislike her

The thing that makes me roll my eyes the most is when someone insistent that the reason a female character is more popular than their preferred male character is because people want to have sex with her. Yes, this is accurate in some franchises but I've seen it happen in literally every single franchise, up to completely nonsexual ones like Kirby. They're clearly just outing themselves.

Speaking of Pokemon, Cynthia is a shining example too. Forget her music, her team composition, her relevance, nah it's solely because they want to fuck her.

Because Walt is the main character and she gets in the way of that. She also makes all of his decisions and treats him like a burden/obligation before he becomes a drug dealer. She completely disregarded how he felt about getting cancer treatment.

tbf, they had a son who was on the border of being special needs (he was independent, but potentially needed some help) and a newborn daughter.

ideally, someone should feel like they should be able to die how they want, when they want, but when you have a family who needs you, it can be selfish.

plus, he was someone she loved and the thought of him dying like that was a huge blow to her too.

Yep, Fire Emblem is a notable one too. I've seen so many people claim people only like Edelgard for her looks and she'd be hated, even as a villain, if she was male completely forgetting how well received Ashnard, Walhart, and Alvis are. Hell, even Alvis still gets his share of people genuinely believing he did nothing wrong. And of course some of those Edelgard dismissers think Alvis is a peak character.

The one thing you can hate Skyler White for is smoking while pregnant. Of course, for most people it's just because she "ruins the fun". God forbid a wife be concerned for his husband going out at weird hours, having a second cell phone, and other things. Of course later on her concerns are even more justified.

People hated Carmella Soprano too. She's actually a flawed character with her own faults. She's vain, materialistic, hypocritical while also sanctimonious at times. Even when she was called out for profiting off of blood money, she didn't change. The thing is, most of the dumbest complaints just boiled down to sexism and her being a "harpy" who "nags" at Tony.

And people hated Kay Adams from The Godfather because of one certain major plot point in Part II and is even considered worse than her murderous mob boss husband.

Yeah I was thinking about this the other day. Like people immediately accepted John Wick as this ultimate badass who can kill basically everyone while naked and unarmed despite nothing really justifying it in the movie. Especially at first since one of the first things to happen in the first movie is John gets his ass kicked but Rey from SW is treated like the greatest Mary Sue to ever Mary Sue because she's half-way competent despite being the chosen one in a setting with literal magic.

Basically women characters have to earn their competence whereas male characters can just be competent or even insanely overpowered and require no justification for it.

If you identify with a character then it's easier to just be happy when everything perfectly goes their way because things going their way is things going your way! The societal problem is there's a shit ton of people that just accept John Wick isn't the type of movie for them, whereas there's a vocal group that thinks they're neutral unbiased and therefore every movie made should appeal to them.

Idk. I feel like you just picked a few examples that fit this narrative.

Both Skyler and Kay Adams appear as the female partner of an anti hero. By definition, the lead is a shitty person that we are made to like. Sure Kyler was disliked but I think that was by design and just good writing more than anything. There are examples of women in similar roles that arent hated (Carmela Soprano).

Some people use fictional characters and women in the media as a vehicle for their seething misogynist hatred.

It's not always the people you expect either. They aren't all far right MAGA religious types.

Plenty of male characters are hated too, of course, but are rarely subject to the same intensely vile, sexually focused, abuse as women.

People just have a tendency to really hate characters, and it's not always clear why. I wouldn't even say female characters necessarily. Example, people say people accept John Wick but not Rey, but there's a difference. John Wick basically establishes itself as Wick being a badass from the start that wanted to get out of the game and be left alone. Star Wars establishes Rey as a nobody that seems to magically be good at things with no explanation.

Kim Possible is a high school girl that's super competent and has a less competent partner for some of the tasks she performs. Most don't have a problem with her. She's almost the same level of super competence as John Wick, and she's just a cheerleader lol.

I think what really matters is the fan base itself and the types of people they are for what they accept. IE, Katara fans really complained about Katara in the live action version, not because she was made more competent in battle, but because she was reduced to nothing but the muscle of the group and they removed her arc from season 1 and all of her interesting quirks.

Some fanbases are just really bad. It can be sexism, as someone else mentioned fire emblem. Female lords really seem to get disproportionate amounts of hate, but I've always believed that female lords IS always seems to take more risks with them than the male lords, which makes them more controversial.

??? Wtf kind of response is this? People like Leia and she's clearly a female, people like Jyn well enough in Rogue One. Ahsoka had more people that liked her than dislikes her last I checked. People LOVE Kreia from Kotor 2 and the hatred of Kreia comes more from the character being designed to be divisive more than being a woman. People like Mira from there as well.

I made comparisons to other franchises because it makes sense to talk about a multitude of franchises rather than just stick with one character that wasn't met with reception from a series of films that were not met with good reception versus another character that happens to be male and a hell of a lot more fleshed out from media that has overall more positives for it than negatives.

The comparison is night and day.
