I'm surprised it took them this long to do it. I feel like a decent Reddit alternative needs to step it up now.

I mean that's fucked up and kind of turns me off from the site. That said though, it says it won't be any of the existing subreddits.

Edit: I removed the word clearly because it isn't clear. But I think it's probably correct.

It better not be the porn subs. Thats the only reason I go to Reddit.

Putting paywalls up is a surefire way to tank your audience. And we've seen from Twitter/X that people are willing to put up with a lot as long as they don't need to majorly change any habits.

Having to pay to access when you didn't use to is one of the most obvious ways to force a lot of people to change those habits.

On Reddit the theory on a sub I lurk there is that it will be the porn subs that get paywalled. To compete with OF.

Shame GameFAQs banned hornyposting. If true it would show the audience for hornyposting is increasing.

Don't worry, they'll get around to banning porn eventually like every other site before them that got super popular, banned it because the advertisers didn't like it, and then was immediately replaced by a different service within a year or two.

Reddit's paywall would ostensibly only apply to certain new subreddit types, not any subreddits currently available. In August, Huffman said that even with paywalled content, free Reddit would "continue to exist and grow and thrive."

So this likely going to be for porn content. Like the general porn subreddits are going to be for discovery/advertising. And the place to find more porn will be paywalled by the porn creators.

I poked my head in there a while back. Greenbigot is already back in there on an alt doing the same old shit.

Reddit just turned a profit for the first time. As part of its third quarter earnings results released on Tuesday, the company reported a profit of $29.9 million, along with $348.4 million in revenue a 68 percent increase year over year.

The company hasnt been profitable at any point in its nearly 20-year history. Since going public, Reddit lost $575 million during its first quarter on the market, but it decreased that loss to $10 million last quarter and is now finally in the black.

Social Media sites are weird like that, where they can lose tens to hundreds of millions a year for a decade and investors will still keep throwing money at it, so while we should absolutely criticize companies that make bank and choose to screw over their customers even more, is it fair to call them greedy when this is the first time in twenty years that they didn't lose money?

And to think, when he tried to back out of the deal and everyone pushed to force the deal through while aggressively taunting him about it, if they had even a modicum of common sense and just let him walk away, they could have avoided this entire travesty.

The article just says new ones would have the option to be paywalled. All the old ones people in this sub are fearful wont be paywalled.

OF models/porn people making private subs seems to be the most likely use of this paywall.

unfortunately reddit is in a state where there's over a decade of great information for various questions asked over time. so even if a competitor launched today and stole all reddits users, that does nothing for all the historical content on reddit which you get to via google searches

also the enshittification began when they stopped third party apps working. people didnt see it at the time though, people saw it as, "i hate reddit admins, and reddit admins disagree with this, therefore i agree with blocking apps to spite the admins"
