I don't think it starts in a very good place for Japanese

I rarely use it personally anymore but it's good to remember a few small phases and kanji. But for fluency and long conversations I don't think it's reliable.

It's an okay way to get introduced to it but it's not going to get you very far

They really know how to milk free advertising. It's gonna be a move from twitter to bluesky.

For most languages my understanding about duolingo is that it's good to get you some basic understanding and speaking ability but that's about it. That said, some basic ability like that is often all you really need to then go immerse yourself in the language. Besides taking classes with a proper instructor? I'm not sure what the best method is for learning a language without immersion in it.

I use it mostly to keep my 2 semesters of Japanese fresh. You won't learn much about the grammer of the language from Duolingo. My biggest issue was remembering vocabulary, and the app helps a lot with that.

it's outright atrocious in the long term, but it's good enough to see if you are interested enough to want to learn more. If it teaches the basic hiragana/katakana, honestly that's a great breaking point, then you can look elsewhere for better lessons. Online has so many resources for free, it's almost overwhelming.

For reference, it's become a bit of a meme that people who do duolingo japanese for 3+ years still struggle to pass even the lowest level japanese proficiency tests, which like, anyone could pass with a single year of japanese in school/college
