IQ Test - FAQs Mensa International

I took the challenge and got 102 which is lower than I expected. I expected a 116 like the estimate I got when I was interviewed for career.

I took an IQ test once when I was much younger and think I scored in the low 120s. But I may not even be remembering correctly because my memory is terrible, I'm fuzzy on anything spatial, and I'm a little trash goblin nature girl.
But, anyway, a test is an inadequate measurement of a person and I would rather sit on my ass doing nothing than waste my time on one.

One thing to keep in mind, it changes with age. Whatever your IQ is measured at when you're 20 is not necessarily going to be the same as when you're 40, or when you were 12.

It's also worth remembering that, if you've taken an IQ test online, you probably haven't actually taken an IQ test. If you want an actual valid IQ test, it generally needs to be administered in-person, because it includes aspects (like being a timed test) that most online tests usually don't take into account (if they're anything resembling an IQ test at all, and not just a Buzzfeed quiz giving you an arbitrary score).

All that being said, I was tested in college (about 30 years ago) as part of my psychology course, and I scored 148. Which would be more like a 170 going by usual Internet quiz standards. I was actually offered the chance to apply to Mensa, but I never did.

if we are subtracting 22 points from online scores that would put my iq at 80 XD

If I take an online IQ test I get every question right and get like 140 pretty consistently. If I take a real IQ test (when I was 15) I aced some parts of it so hard they couldn't measure it, and then flunked the grammar part of it because I didn't know a bunch of dumb words I've never heard in my life, so it averaged out to be 115.

I also have unmedicated ADHD so it means I can just have a bad day, or a day where I'm super focused on something. This is basically why I think innate intelligence as a concept is bullshit, because I can fluctuate like that just based off how hard my brain can focus. If you took the "dumbest" person here and gave them anxiety and a neurotic personality type they would obsess over things until they were a "genius". It doesn't necessarily make them any more useful irl.

Also yes I acknowledge my above post.

Well the doctor told me the first part and my take is the second. So I'm just really good at pattern recognition and really bad at grammar. They told me my adhd wasn't helping either.

This was also when I was young, and my generation is the first to really play 3D video games, which apparently really alters your spacial understanding skills. So portions of the test I did faster than he could hold up the cards.

Haven't tested officially. Received a promising figure now and then from unofficial ones, but presumably those just meant I'm good with certain tests. We're talking at least 20 years ago, though. Last time may have been for a larger IT party that ran a load of tests by me, though I wasn't given a detailled outcome.

Chronic illness now does not affect my thinking at this time and hopefully won't, but it does limit my energy and I'd have to plan the right time to sit down with a test. Not particularly bothered.

Also, this test is kinda bullshit because it likes to spam you with xor operations, which I have a lot of practice with being a programmer, and the vast majority of people do not.

I ran out of time, which is why I got a couple wrong, ruined my 140 score again.

If you ever take one again learn what XOR operations are first because that's probably where you got stonewalled.

I think the point is that you're supposed to figure out what a XOR is on the spot, and then recognize it, and that's what makes you "smart".

Sorry if this is a cheating spoiler.

I think the XOR ones were some of the easiest, actually, assuming we're talking about the same thing (the ones where the third picture in the row consisted of only the elements that appeared in exactly one of the other two pictures). I generally recognized those almost immediately, and figuring out the answer from there was easy. I'm pretty sure my main problem was overthinking others (probably including missing ones that would have been simple XOR problems if I'd noticed), but I'm also just a bit brain foggy today.

Broadly, IQ is meant to be a test of mathematical and linguistic reasoning ability. This test focuses more on spatial intelligence and pattern recognition, but those are related skills to math/linguistic reasoning. While those are arguably important elements of determining whether or not somebody is smart, it's still definitely an incomplete assessment of how well people think. One can be "smart" without being good at math.

More generally, "smart" can be broken down into three broad concepts: Knowledge, intelligence, and wisdom.

Knowledge is simply what you know. Knowing more means you're better-equipped to handle situations in which that knowledge is useful. Assessing this in terms of an individual's abilities entails looking at how many different pieces of knowledge they can remember and for how long.

Intelligence can be best described as mental flexibility/adaptability. It's a measure of your ability to recognize patterns, make connections between existing pieces of information, and synthesize new knowledge based on those connections. This is the main thing IQ tests aim to measure. Arguably, this is the most useful form of "smart" because it's the one that reflects your ability to learn new concepts/skills, but that's really only applicable in contexts where you frequently need to learn new stuff.

Wisdom is understanding how to apply the knowledge you have, and is mostly a matter of experience (which is itself a mix of knowledge and intelligence in that it consists of learning information and figuring out how that information can be generalized). Being mostly experiential, wisdom is less about innate mental traits and more about how well you've let yourself learn from your experiences.

If you're looking at a leader, you generally want a mix of the three: They need to know what they're doing, they need to be able to adapt to unfamiliar situations, and they need to understand the significance and limitations of what they know. A highly intelligent person that knows very little and has no experience can learn quickly, but will make many mistakes in the process. Somebody who knows a lot but doesn't understand how to apply that knowledge is going to struggle outside of very specific scenarios that ask for that knowledge. Somebody with tons of experience but who lacks knowledge about a specific subject is going to have a hard time doing anything with that subject (as an example, look at Congress trying to legislate anything tech-related), especially if they aren't intelligent enough to acquire and synthesize the necessary knowledge quickly.

At the end of the day, though, as far as most interactions and activities go, being smart doesn't matter as much as simply knowing what you're doing. I've spent my entire life being significantly smarter than the vast majority of people around me, and that really doesn't mean anything at all. For all I've learned and can synthesize, I'm still a layperson in the vast majority of fields and therefore need to defer to the expertise of people with more experience. That's not to say those experts are always right (like I had a plumbing issue in my apartment and I figured out and suggested a solution three visits before the property manager and plumber finally tried my idea and discovered I was right all along, though I have a feeling that was more because the property manager doesn't really know what she's doing and the plumber was taking advantage of that), but I need to constantly keep in mind that I'm in prime Dunning-Kruger territory and make a point of trying to understand why my knowledge/opinion seems to differ from theirs. Being intelligent doesn't make me knowledgeable or wise.

Bernie definitely seems very intelligent, but he needs other people to be smart with him to understand what he's saying when he uses all these big words. Smart Republicans know he's right and that he's just their enemy. He just wants to take their rich money.

But as a poor man with piss poor education Trump go maga maga maga, and that really speak to me. It's why Reagan privatized college, so people would be dumb enough to vote red. It was a losing battle if everyone was educated. Also, I feel like while Trump is definitely no genius, he's definitely smarter than he puts on, and he treats his voters like the idiot marks that they are by acting like he has no grasp on reality.

If you ask me it's all just Marxist theory playing out exactly as it always does. Capital likes to accumulate into a big black hole and that's just the natural way of things, everything else just bends over to make that happen.
