Current Events > It's not normal for a virus scan to lag your PC, right?

This started happening months ago. The virus scanner does a daily scan every morning but I never noticed it because it didn't impact the performance. But now whenever it starts, there's massive hiccups where if I click anything it takes several seconds to register. So I essentially just have to wait a few minutes for the scan to finish before I can even do anything again.

virus scans can be resource hogs, yes. check your task manager to see if it's using large amounts of CPU or RAM

It shouldn't be causing your PC to become unresponsive like that but virus scans do put some strain on your CPU.

What's the antivirus? Maybe there was a recent update which caused a memory leak perhaps. I don't think it's a sign of malware though.

It's VIPRE.

But yeah, maybe I should change the daily scan to a time I don't tend to use the PC a lot.

It is a fairly old computer so maybe it's begging to get an upgrade, tbh. 8GB RAM and an Intel Core 9400 CPU, lol.

But it's good to know it seems normal.

It can cause slowdown depending how big of a task it wants to do, what you're doing, what else is going on, and what hardware you're rocking.

Windows Defender doesn't slow down my personal PC while gaming at all but my work PC where it wants to know everything that git and my code environment are doing, it will slow it down quite a bit.
