Gene Park in particular (WaPo journalist who loves games) is really going hard on Xenoblade X DE (he played a preview copy) and the franchise in general and I'm actually kinda loving it. He says stuff like "if you miss how Final Fantasy used to be, please consider picking up Xenoblade. It's everything you could ever ask for." Gameplay notwithstanding I think I'd tend to agree, though not quite as strongly. But Xenoblade feels like FF's glory days in many ways. I haven't played any Trails games yet so I dunno personally how those fare, but I've seen many Xenoblade fans love that series so I'm sure it scratches similar itches. I guess I'd say to anyone who's wary to try it because of the artstyle, is to not let its looks fool you into thinking it's trash. It's a top tier jRPG franchise. --- Game collection: http://www.backloggery.com/bakonbitz Gaming channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwVQm69J7bGScbv3_50C0dA ... Copied to Clipboard!

I loved 2, even as cringe as it could be at times. Once you understood the combat properly, it is a good system (I've only played 2, so can't comment if it's similar in other games in the franchise) but very overwhelming at first. A few years back I nearly bought a Wii U specifically for X. So glad I didn't now haha only other game I wanted was Wind Waker and rumours are it's on its way eventually. Looking forward to X coming out. Gimme the mechs! Even if it takes forever to get to that part --- Stand out, fit in ... Copied to Clipboard!

1 and X are the best ones. 1 for being the JRPG we needed after the garbage dump of crappy anime-tie-ins, low budget horny-fests like Neptunia, and poor Ff games. 1 took itself seriously, was unique for the time, and was also packed with side content, which was lacking in games at that time. X was great for being an incredibly immersive world with believable alien life, environments, and atmosphere. It has a lot of options, customization, and side content. It looks nice outside of the dooey faces. And the only big flaw people ever mention is the dumb Tatsu and Lin scenes, and the NLA music. Everything else has been addressed in the remake, like unfinished sidequests and lack of followthrough with story beats. --- ORAS secret base: http://imgur.com/V9nAVrd 3DS friend code: 0173-1465-1236 ... I admit, it's become one of my more favorite series in the (relative) "newer" era. Few games can really draw me in, like 1 & 2 did. Really considering picking up XCX's Definitive Edition; I didn't get around to the original until it was well out of print, & would really like to own a physical copy, for collector's sake & the fact it's supposed to wrap up the cliffhanger. buddah86 posted... Once you understood the combat properly, it is a good system (I've only played 2, so can't comment if it's similar in other games in the franchise) but very overwhelming at first. XB2 is a legitimately fun game with what is easily the most engaging system, once you get the hang of it, that is, assuming you aren't going to get obsessed over which blade designs are too sexy. My biggest complaint is that it has too many arbitrary restrictions on allowing you to use the system's full potential. In XB1, you can use chain attack as soon as you have enough party members, but for XB2, it's locked to a battle that's halfway through Uraya; I can accept the plot reason for XB3's chain attack, especially since it's given relatively early, but XB2 withholds it for too long for no really good reason. Then there's the blades; no reason why you can't immediately equip a full set of 3, besides 'reasons'. I can accept that Tora's blade options are restricted by plot, but the Poppiswap limitations of not allowing him to switch Poppi's element just plain undermines the tradeoff of the limit that his blade is a modular robot. --- Remember kids, it's only an RPG until someone gets hit with a meteor; Then it's a JRPG! I'm one of the few who actually really adores XC3's story. It might not be the most exciting story, and admittedly at first it didn't grab me like the other two in the main trilogy, but it does the most to help make the characters feel "real" in my eyes, with it tackling some hard-hitting subjects at the forefront. It's also the game that benefits the most from revisiting it, and the Event Theater helps so much with that. I swear the more I revisit cutscenes in the game the more things I catch on to, including possibly intentional nods to elements and themes from the previous two games. The sidequests also do a ton to help flesh out the characters and set the tone that each Chapter is trying to set. --- Game collection: http://www.backloggery.com/bakonbitz Gaming channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwVQm69J7bGScbv3_50C0dA ...
