tl;dw: Basically anything with lighting, transparency, video files, and jpg background stuff is fucked up when it got ported from Dreamcast to Gamecube (and the later ports)

Especially anything involving a computer screen. Wow did they drop the ball hard on those scenes

The person who made the videos you linked to is responsible for a lot of SA1/SA2 mods that fix the games. You can mod SA1 so that it's basically 1:1 to the Dreamcast version and even play the original calendar-specific DLC that was available in it too.

IIRC there's not an all-in-one Dreamcast conversion mod for SA2 that makes as widespread changes as SA1, but I've got a list of GameBanana mods (in order) that you can try.

  • No Model Tinting
  • Cutscene Revamp
  • High Quality Textures
  • Oddity Patch
  • Eggman Lighting Fix
  • SA2 Volume Controls
  • SA2 Input Controls


I also have SA2 Render Fix installed which is more of an overhaul mod, but it's turned off right now. I haven't had the time to test it to see if it's compatible with the other mods above. Might be worth trying.

A. They couldve written shorter lines or had the actors say them faster (in the scene you linked, Sonic and Shadow both sound super hammy, in part because they take their sweet time delivering lines) or slowed the visuals down (its not like the lip flaps matched the audio anyway).
B. That doesnt explain the scenes where the music completely muffles the dialogue.

If so, yes that the original Dreamcast version. When it got ported to GCN, it added a couple of things like way more multiplayer maps and characters (though it removed Big the Cat from it lol) as well as extra Chao Garden stuff like Chao Karate.

The original DC intro was also way lamer compared to the GCN version >_>

sa2 multiplayer kinda sucks outside of like 3 stages but the dreamcast version had no content and ran considerably worse. i don't care about the chao garden but it was awful on dreamcast (felt like a beta in sa1)

the good changes vastly outweigh the oddities added

Nah it's the perfect way to give a sonic game a versus mode imo

While it's not the most balanced, it's really fun to do head to head races, hunting or shooting battles with the various characters introduced

specials basically kill off any chances of it being any good tbh. same with the awful checkpoint system. i think downtown race and the grind level are the only two racing levels that are any good.

Yeah the special moves are pretty hit & miss, I believe they add to the games meta but I understand the dislikes they get

The checkpoint system is perfect tho since theirs a catch up mechanic, but if I don't want my opponent to catch up by dying I'll just skip them

That actually was because they were unable to delay the animations and clips and had to make the Japanese text work in English, and English sentences can take longer to speak

It doesn't bother me in that particular instance but it pretty much happens regardless of the characters relationship with each other and just makes it hilarious.

Also, this has nothing to do with the Japanese to English, but the soun editing is laughably bad even for 90s game standards
