Catnap is absolutely one of my favorite monsters from a game that, beforehand, I held no stock in whatsoever. But then this furball walked in and decided to genuinely be a threat that just oozes malice and danger. I realize now that since this was aesthetics over context, I probably would've been better picking someone like Boxy Boo if I was going for a Poppy character specifically. Hell, even Huggy Wuggy woulda done better, I think. (Or Yarnaby, but Chapter 4 wasn't out at the time.) Ah well, hindsight is 20/20, and at least getting this far was pretty solid. I guess I'll get back to talking about who you picked. I knew I had to pick an Ace Attorney character because they're fun to practice when I draw. There's so much vibrant personality and expression and colour in the design of this franchise that I can't get enough of, even after six mainline games and multiple spinoffs. Now, why I didn't pick Edgeworth instead (see: my icon), that's a secret. I have a feeling Maya, or the Ace Attorney series as a whole would have done better if a bigger picture was considered, so I can't say I'm fussed about her placement. Like yeah, her charm lies in how different and wacky she is when placed next to Phoenix and I get that. I am however a massive bow truther. I love the big bow. We stan big bow supremacy in my house. Hes another exceptionally dressed man, but unlike the others below him, Megumi Kitanji has a very strong aesthetic. Look at that pattern on his suit, that cocky stance, the small amounts of color in an otherwise black-and-white scheme. This is a man who cares very deeply about appearances. This tracks because hes the Conductor of the Reapers Game, and his job is to make sure things run a certain way. Kitanji has attitude to spare, and enough determination to enact his will on others. There isnt much to really analyze; its such a simple yet effective design. The headphones and sunglasses are a nice touch. I look at him and I go, oh youre the antagonist, that tracks. What a great design, very economical. Kitanji just really knocks it out of the park hes only not higher because there are 109 characters that do it even better. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Dante (Devil May Cry 5) KamikazePotato https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/b/bd938c75.jpg Here we have another tier separator. When I was adding characters to the ranking I often asked myself if they were better or worse than Dante. Dante, epitome of regular, conventionally attractive man; Dante, the prettiest macho man in gaming; Dante, who says volumes with one facial expression. More than anyone else so far, Dantes personality is on full display. Hes a strong delineator for the rest of the ranking. I dont love his design. The clothes are whatever. The weaponry two guns, one pointed at another person, and a sword strapped to his back says hes battle ready. Thats fine. Thats not the big selling point. Dantes big selling point is his face. That little smirk. That smirk says the following things: - I know youre no threat to me, but lets have fun anyway. - I know Im more attractive than you, but Ill still fuck you. - I know Im more memorable and cleverer than you, but Ill let you think youll get in a one-liner or two. - I am in control. Period. All of that from one little smirk. I would not be friends with this man, but I would be transfixed by his face, and not because of his conventional attractiveness. He has the stare of a lion who can have any meal in the jungle that he wants, and hes chosen you, and you can try to run, but if you get away, its because he allowed you to get away. And he can come back and eat you later any time he wants. He is a predator. That much is entirely conveyed by that little smirk. Very effective. ... Copied to Clipboard!

My primary concern with writeups is twofold: 1) Giving myself enough time to write them 2) Making sure each character has enough time in the spotlight For #1, with the friend ranking I did one writeup in the morning and one in the evening, but they were already all written beforehand, and while these writeups don't take me too long to write because I have notes already, it's still something I need to set aside time to do, so it's not always expedient since my schedule can vary depending on the day. #2 is why I tend not to post too many writeups at once, and also why I try to wait until somebody's commented on a writeup before posting another. ... 108. Storm (X-Men 97) someone https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/d/dcd6d661.jpg Im surprised Im ranking this one comparatively low Storms cartoon look is very iconic. But like I said, everything at this stage is at least kind of cool. And Storms updated look has a few flaws. First off, the positives. It seems like Storms X-Men 97 look is identical to her original 90s cartoon appearance, except for one thing: her hair. I absolutely love her windswept, pointing-upward hairdo. Her long, flowing hair is definitely iconic (and might be what Storm fans think of first when they think of her? Unsure), but this haircut makes more sense from an in-universe perspective. Storm is flying all over the place, controlling lightning and rain and such. If her hair was that long, surely it would just get in the way all the time, right? Like I have no doubt Storm is capable enough to use her mutant powers to keep her hair out of her face, but its one extra thing she has to worry about in a fight. Her shorter cropped hair in this design therefore makes more practical sense. Plus it just looks cooler. It looks like its perpetually held aloft bywell, the wind. Excellent blending of her powers and her design. But the rest of her costume is like, I dont knowweird? Her sleeves are all bunched up for some reason. She has two capes for some reason (again). I dont love the little X pins over her chest; I think the costume would be improved without them, partially because they distract from the very cool yellow stripe that runs throughout and the silver and yellow color scheme that really pops (and pairs nicely with her hair). These are things I never noticed with her original design, even though the costume seems the same. You cant fool me twice, Ororo! ... Copied to Clipboard!

107. Utsuho Reiuji (Touhou Project) @MacArrowny https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/e/ea4b0b85.jpg You might not be able to tell from looking at the art, but Utsuho Reiuji has one of the most complicated designs in the ranking not necessarily in appearance, but in lore. She represents the concept of nuclear fusion, wearing a nuclear control rod on her right arm; a mass representing the elephants foot of Chernobyl on her right foot; and an orbit of electrons around her left ankle. Thats one layer. Theres another layer on top of all that: she also represents a raven, since theres a myth about a three-legged crow associated with the power of the sun (hence, nuclear reactor). Her black and white wings are raven-y (ravenous?). She also has a cape with a starry pattern on the inside, and her long, dark brown hair is evocative of a bird. Theres another layer even beyond that. The Touhou Wiki goes into detail about the legend of the god of nuclear fusion, Yatagarasu, who grants Utsuho the abilities to manipulate nuclear fusion. The red eye on her chest exists as proof that Utsuho obtained this power through absorbing Yatagarasu, since his eyes are red. Her job in-universe is the manage the fires of Hell. So yeah, thats a lot, and to see it all laid out like this is cool. The prooooooblem with Utsuho from my perspective is I dont learn anything about her personality from her design. Or maybe its that I learn the wrong things. In contrast with her determined and a little playful appearance in the art, Utsuho is actually quite ditzy. She doesnt even seem to understand why shes the antagonist of Subterranean Animism! And Im not getting that through the art. I learned about the history of Chernobyl, but I cant see why Utsuho loves Cinnamon Toast Crunch. It feels like she has a conceptual design. Theres something cooking here but you need to really be familiar with the game and the lore to understand it. I appreciate all the details and meaning in every inch of her design, but like, the cape is the coolest part and it has nothing to do with any of the lore that I could see, so maybe Im just not the intended audience! ... Chloe Price - I remember thinking she was an anime character because I saw fan art of her first, so it was fun to learn that her cast members all have normal hair colours and no tattoos. Life is Strange doesn't particularly have an aesthetic choice I enjoy, but her design is a good enough for me. Juste Belmont - I don't normally care for the pretty boy subgenre of men, but I love his poofy sleeves and high boots SO much. I don't know if he screams "reserved", though. Maybe his in-game design isn't so .... bright? Saiki Kusuo - He looks both weird and normal to me. The colour choices are striking in a way I like, those little antennae things are totally sci-fi cheesy B-movie fare, but I feel like he's being held back somehow. Alicia - I like how she's a soft and dainty character, but with inner strength too. I'm a bigger fan of Silmeria's design but they work so well together. Golden Harvest - the perfect example of a background pony character. There's ones I like more, but she's the perfect middle ground between unremarkable, and interesting. Megumi Aikawa - Can't lie I didn't notice her arm at first. I like women in suits but I don't have much thoughts on this one. Her hair is cool. Matt Damon - Well, this design makes me laugh every time I see it, and that counts for something I think. Rambley - This design is literally peak to me. He's very simple in design, but the way he's drawn and animated, his shape language and silhouette is such a standout to me. He's got so much PERSONALITY! I love him. Remilia Scarlet - I like this twist on jer design, but not the art. The fact that I cannot see her arms in here is just too weird, but I love everything else. ... Copied to Clipboard!

106. 2B (NieR:Automata) @MysteriousStan https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/0/028ef45c.jpg 2B is a YoRHa android. Cold and sarcastic, 2B is forced to battle the Machine lifeforms. She has a specific role to play in her partnership with fellow android 9S, a role she is none too happy about. 2B also appears in a variety of crossovers, though I stuck to her appearance in her debut title. 2B cuts a very striking, very imposing figure. Everything about her body is impractical. More than half of her form seems to be legs. She has this flowing dress that seems like it would barely stay on her body in combat. An ample boob window pokes out over her top half. I dont know what protection any of this actually gives her in combat, but the end result is an odd juxtaposition. Whats even odder is its not a ridiculous design it all seems to congeal nicely together (the color helps with that see below) and gives her an otherworldly, inhuman vibe. The blindfold over her eyes is a curious addition too, nestled neatly beneath her white hair. I really dont know what to make of 2B. Im a little intimidated by her off-kilterness, and given that I think thats the point, I have to give high marks. Her color scheme is all black, white, and pale skin. As stated before, Im naturally drawn to character designs that rely on a black and white palette; here it makes elements of her design stand out, like the contrast between her black blindfold and white hair, and the slightly different shades of black in her legs and upper body enhance the detail. Pretty neat! Contextually, 2B is tricky for me because I tried to steer clear of spoilers. What I gathered from 2Bs design is that shes inhuman (correct), stoic (correct), and an unwilling puppet (seems to be correct). Her uncanny valleyness is very prominent, which is good. I do wonder how much waifu bait 2B is for a lot of people, and whether my impressions of her as off-putting are out of the norm, but this is my ranking, so neener neener. She does suffer a bit because of the male gazey type stuff. Shes a lot of legs and boobs, and while thats presented in an interesting package, I dont really look at her and see something iconic. I see, like, a kinky robot French maid. Its an intriguing take, sure, but I guess, while I think 2Bs design is eye-catching, I wouldnt call it super memorable. Needs more zippers obviously. ...
