You ever have that one piece of media, a TV show, ad, game, book, or random internet thing that you swear existed, but you just cant find anymore? Maybe you vaguely remember a weird animated short from your childhood, a commercial that nobody else seems to recall, or a game you played once and never saw again.

For me, its this bizarre educational PC game from the early 2000s that had some kind of talking fish and a creepy underwater lab. I swear it was real, but Ive found zero trace of it.

Whats your lost media mystery? Have you ever successfully tracked one down?

My brother and I found three board games for our childhood, but there is still an arcade game from the early 80s I could never find.

All the time. There was one that I found the answer to, actually from PotD! My cousin used to have a song on an 8-track that he'd play. I thought he called it the "Michael Jordan Baby Song", and it was a baby babbling and singing something I thought sounded like "Ookoo See, Ookoo Sah".

Turns out it was this, I found the answer after 25 years!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KwpU0T3PLA

Also a ton of videos from Youtube. There was one I remember called "VG Dogs" that was a shitty animation of furry art and one line I remember specifically was "What does your butt smell like? Like Daikatana!"

I used to live in an apartment complex that had a built in library. The library was tiny but it had nothing but high quality sci-fi and fantasy novels and an impressively comfy couch.

I once picked up a sci-fi book at random and read about a chapter of it, but I put it back down wanting to pick it back up later. I ended up moving away and now I want to go find that book again but I can't remember anything about it, including the name or the author.

The only thing I remember clearly was that it was that it was written by a woman, it was an older sci-fi novel, it was in hardcover, the cover was black and it was about a college dropout who is making contact with aliens.

This book has since become my white whale. Since it is an old book it's not sold in any book stores near me. I check all my library's sci-fi collection and none of them have it. The only thing I know for certain is that I'll know it when I find it.

I @#$%ing hate online book search algorithms because they only prioritize popular novels and novels written recently.

A book series I read in middle school. I remember having to get one of the books from the city library, so maybe there's a record and I can find out what the series was. Trying to find a fantasy series with wizards, dragons, and mountains to go on only is a bit too much to ask lol.

I was recently vaguely remembering a PC game I played as a kid that consisted of flying around collecting mana orbs for the sake of "restoring equilibrium," which I remembered absolutely nothing about except that basic premise and the fact that I think it came bundled with one of the Compaq PCs my family owned. I'd figured that wasn't much to go on, but this topic promtped me to look, and apparently Google understands exactly what "Compaq game mana equilibrium" means:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Carpet_(video_game)

So I guess this media isn't that lost. I also recently had to do a bit of digging to find an old Maxis game I'd played as a kid that I now recognize was largely a rip-off of The Incredible Machine, but I also pretty easily figured out that I was thinking of Widget Workshop (which I'm remembering as one of the reasons I understood Boolean operators from a relatively early age, well before I learned that they were called "Boolean operators"). Off-hand, I can't think of anything else I'd like to track down.

it was a vhs porn tape

the title was like suck barbossa, or fuck barbossa, but apparently it was not, the internet knows nothing about it and i've even asked that one subreddit that's entirely about finding specific porn based off of what you can remember.

it's not even good, from what little i do remember, but the title turned into an in joke with some friends

Some SpongeBob YTP I saw when I was five or six.

I cant remember much other than it being based on the episode Artist Unknown. It had a scene where Squidward drew a bad circle on his chalkboard, except the YTP edits the circle into having an asscrack when hes done.

A different YTP had Squidward saying heres your shit on a stick, edited from a scene at the beginning of Just One Bite.

To this day, I havent been able to find either video.

Most of the videos from Bath Boys comedy group. They're not lost in the sense that no one knows or remembers them, it's that they are literally lost. They've been pulled from Youtube and never reuploaded. And I can't get any archives from Wayback Machine either.

One where they made a song about Jacob wearing his headphones everywhere to hide his vagina-ears. One where they were trying to find out where the shitload of asparagus in the fridge came from. The one where everyone dressed up as Peter for Halloween just to wreck his brain. All gone. There were a couple I was able to find archives of and save, though. Friend Zoo and Forehead Boss.

Yeah I was thinking about a porns awhile back and asked a forum once but its kinda difficult when there's like millions of leaves on that tree. Maybe Ai could figure it out now a days but I don't care that much.

Another was an early animated cgi movie called "santa vs the snowman" I remember being kinda hard to look up any info about but eventually it was put up on youtube and stuff.

There's some song from like napster or kazaa I cant really even remember how to describe them now but it was probably some mislabeled thing or some indie trying to slip their song under a more popular bands filename so probably undiscoverable.

There was a smooth jazz track I had ripped from one of mom's CDs a long time ago that had no metadata other than the name, Rhythm of Soul. I couldn't find anything else about the track until last year, when I found that someone just happened to have posted an Ebay listing of the album the track came from. I scooped that up real quick.

There was this series of illustrated children's books from like the 70's. I don't know what style to call them; they were kind of like the stuff Mister Rogers would talk about; teaching kids about different feelings and experiences as they get older, that it's natural to feel that way, and the right and wrong ways to handle them.

I don't know the name of the series or the company that made them, so I basically have nothing to go on to find it. I just remember the name of one particular book; "You're All Right." My siblings and I would make all kinds of dumb drawings and captions in the book, making up our own stories with the pictures.

In the early 2000s there was a Ford commercial where a Ford pickup dragged a Chevy pickup out of a lake, and then some comment about how the Chevy sunk "like a rock" (which was Chevy's slogan at the time).

I don't remember exactly how the commercial went, but I found it hilarious.

The flash games on Newgrounds. There was one I remember called Orgasm Girl. Probably shouldn't talk about the details here, but I remember it being a surprisingly intriguing "puzzle" game that actually wasn't really balanced well. Not a finished game either, I think it was just a demo. But there was like one very specific method you had to take to beat the level in a very specific order.

As far as video goes, I've pretty much downloaded everything that has seemed interesting to me in the past 15 years just in case I want to watch it again or use it for something. I have an 8tb hard drive half filled. And this is after me going through and purging stuff I don't care about anymore.

I think it was an edutainment game on the school PC. For some reason I was thinking it was called "Mana Quest" so I picked it, thinking it might be some kind of fantasy/RPG game. It first launched into a central hungry space that felt like it was animated and navigated like Myst. It was in a home in the forest and you prepared stuff for traveling, and then the gameplay portion was first person perspective riding a bike.

A sonic the hedgehog fanfic.... yeah.

In late 2006, I read a fanfic on the IGN boards called "The Emerald Hill Horror". It was a horror slasher parody deal where tails goes crazy and starts killing other sonic character with a chainsaw and I really liked it, It was pretty ambitious and really funny, or at least my 12 year old self thought it was funny... Fan fiction were a fairly new concept for me at the time and this one was one of the first significant ones I remember reading.

I've been searching for it on and off for years now. I don't think it exists on the internet anymore. I've come across references to it and even some fan art of it but the fanfic itself is lost media as far as I can tell.

Oh, there was this tv show I used to watch called Candle Cove...

But seriously, years ago, a PotDer posted a clip from some h-manga. I was never able to find the full thing.

There are tons of things I haven't been able to locate again, though. It's especially true of books because shit goes out of print and anything pre-2000 often doesn't have web presence. Plus, there's so much of it out there. There was this children's anthology I was glancing through in a Goodwill or a Savers once that featured a story about kids being locked underground in a magic school where one student would always stay trapped in the school. I liked the concept and have brought it up at times, but I can never remember the book or story name.

...actually, there are a lot of anthologies that I have similar issues with. But it's kinda hard because there might be one story in a collection that I focus on, but because it's just that one story, it's impossible to find again.

The full scene or the full movie? Knowyourmeme has the full movie's name and a link to buy. Once you know the movie's name, the full scene's easy enough to find.

There was a comedy special that I remember very vividly, but I don't remember who performed it. He had this joke that every time someone did something stupid, a fat guy wearing nothing but a speedo and a bowtie would burst through the nearest door and in an operatic voice declare "MIIIIISTAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!"

Never saw videos of it since, but it always stuck in my mind every time I saw somebody do something stupid.

I forgot about another one, and I actually made a topic asking about it a while ago. But there was a bit of a movie I saw on Comedy Central years ago while flipping through channels of a guy who went to a store looking for condoms but was nervous about it. He was imagining all the people looking at him in disdain and judging him in hushed tones. And then an acappella song starts playing over the PA how "Greg is having lots of sex". I think his name was Greg, can't be sure. It was some normie name like that.

It follows with a scene at home after he's bought the condoms with his wife or girlfriend or whatever and he says nervously, "Alright, sex with a condom! This is hot!" as if it's not something they normally do and he's not used to it. But I changed the channel after that point.

Okay here's another one I suddenly remembered, vaguely.

There was a German singer I stumbled upon a few years ago who was obviously doing a comedic bit, but he was intentionally obnoxious and flamboyant. I can't really remember any of the songs particularly but there was one where he was trying to make pineapple toast or something like that for breakfast and his mom was screaming at him from the other room while he was singing the song. Can't remember who he was at all and it honestly feels like something I dreamt. But I specifically remember the way he sang "Ananas" in sort of a cringe, "sexy" way.

Edit: Okay, nevermind I found it. That was quick.
