I think they are, I think people just misinterpreted Sakamoto's statement of calling them a side story.

Presumably this is still pre-Metroid 2.

That too, yeah. Sakamoto was in charge of overseeing that remake so I think he did that to close the gap.

You could also argue that since there are Mochtroids, it can't be after Super. The series is almost as bad as its inspiration Alien about having the monsters show up where/when they shouldn't/"can't" and explaining it with Looney Tunes logic.

Literally all we know about Mochtroids is that they were the Space Pirates' first attempt at cloning Metroids. Nothing about them suggests there are time frames where they couldn't exist except before Metroid 1.

Anyway, I was considering it and another streamer I watch mentioned it so I'm positing a theory here:

We're not playing as Samus Aran. In the trailer we're seeing a nearly opaque (or fully reflective) purple helmet viewport and I can see almost no detail behind it. The Prime series was always very particular in making sure we could see Samus' face and now we can't.

Just putting a pin there.
