That's one way to look at it. But you are getting your same lifespan out of it either way.

How is dying earlier than you would otherwise "getting your same lifespan"?

You are currently 40.
You would die at 80 in the original time line.
You would live to 40 in the new timeline. You still live 80 years, 40 in original, 40 in the new.

Live to 44 years old. This is discounting the first 4 years you skipped if you accept.

But you are correct. You see the same time either way.

Can you explain any merit you think this hypothetical would provide?
That is entirely up to you, if you think you would rather spend your remaining time in your youth in the past.

Let's see - I get all my memories of my life from after I turn 4 to the time I take this deal, but I only have the maturity of a 4 year old to go with them? Hard pass

Yeah it just doesn't work.

Yeah that's not how math works. A new 40 years in a new time line is only 40 years. There is no additional 40 years.

It's the same 40 years you would have spent in the present, or in the past.

The time being taken off is the time you already spent in the present.

Also because it keeps getting asked, the cause of death would most likely be different. Like if you are going to die due to chronic health, you most likely will not have that same chronic health issue in the past. But if you don't, something else will get you.

More subtly different. The broad strokes would be largely the same, just that you cannot count on certain events to happen or to happen the same way.

And I would still retain the knowledge and intelligence I have now, but in a four year old?

Yes but your ability to process that information will be as limited as a four year old.

Don't you idiots see? If you come back as a robot, you keep your memories, and you beat death by putting your brain into a robot body. You'll be immortal. Plus, you'll have the strength of five gorillas. Did you think I was kidding? Also, any language you want will be programmed into your brain. I'm choosing Italian, so my robot-self can pick up women.

It's a different timeline which means it is only 40 years.

How so? Did I screw up the math?

Not so much the math, but the older one is the shorter time you'd get from the rerun.

I'm 70, probably won't live past 100. By your rules I'll die at 34, which would barely give 6 years with my beautiful redhead (that's if I can even find her). She's my one regret in life and six years just isn't enough.

it would be fine go back if it weren't the lifespan penalty. most of us in our 40's and will probably won't be dead until our 80's/90's so we would be dead before adulthood.

yeah... there's absolutely nothing wrong with the current knowledge, but maturity of a child. it adds a level of challenge. people here really underestimate how well behaved children can be.

-The only thing you take with you is your memories, no possessions.
-You don't bring your emotional and mental maturity with you. You will still be in the same headspace you were at 4 years old and you will still experience the process of growing up.

These points are contradictory. Emotional and mental maturity IS dependent on life experience. If you go back with that life experience, you're going back with that maturity by default. Maybe your younger brain will make it become more difficult to have certain skills like anger management and critical thinking, but no different than what a traumatic brain injury or PTSD would cause. But it would also give you the benefit of higher functioning memory retention and learning skills.

Aside from this, it's a toss up. It might be enticing to basically "reroll" your life with different world events, but there's also a lot from this reality to lose, even if I hate where I'm at. And the cut life expectancy doesn't bother me at all. I really don't have much value for it already and I'd technically not be losing any time in total. But this isn't really something that could be possible or guaranteed anyways. Anything can happen and we can all die at any time. What's stopping me from doing it myself?

If you have memories then you would have the maturity to go with them. You can't have one without the other. It just would not work.
