It seems to me like if tariffs worked like Trump has said, that they will punish other countries, if you think about it, it doesn't make sense.

Hey China, if you wanna ship million of pounds of soybeans to the US, you're going to have to pay tariffs!

*china finds somewhere else to send those soybeans, thus avoiding the tax*

like, if tariffs worked as claimed, how would that even work or do anything but incentivize, directly, other countries to find other buyers?

The fact that some countries only get a 10% tariff while its immediate neighbor gets a higher tariff means exporters of that country will be incentivized to move their stuff to the country with the lower tariff and label them as "made in <10% tariff country>" before shipping them from there to the US.

Interesting that you bring up China and soybeans. China is actually the biggest importer of soybeans in the world. Trump's first term trade war with China was detrimental to US soybean farmers and now China gets most of their soybeans from Brazil.

Sounds like the guy believes Trump's lies that tariffs are paid by the other countries, so if an American company is paying a tariff on importing from Chile, it must be because Chile put a tariff on the US. He doesn't understand that his company is paying Trump's tariff.

The biggest issue is finding another country or countries willing to buy as much. The US is a big market, finding other countries willing to buy the same amount is a massive undertaking. Which is why the orange fuckbucket thinks he has the upper hand. Good thing other countries will be willing to take the hit just to fuck him.
