They shouldn't have been 11 and 14, but should have been Final Fantasy Online 1 and 2.

14 is like the only good mainline one since 10 though

If anything everything after 10 should not be mainline except 14. So, Final Fantasy 14 is now Final Fantasy 11.

Also I haven't played 11 but 14 definitely feels like a single player game just adapted to MMO format. It makes it really hard for me to get into.

12 is more like 14 and 11 than it is like 10 IMO

I'll agree that they shouldn't have been part of the numbered series. Just call them Final Fantasy Online or something; it wouldn't be anywhere close to the first time a full game was established as a spinoff and not part of the main line, like Tactics or Crystal Chronicles.

Tactics has the right to call itself a numbered game, and I certainly wouldn't have complained if they did back in the day.

The bottom line is they can't afford not to and risk being seen as spinoffs with their costs of development and upkeep.

Id prefer that they hadnt, but they absolutely did it to market the game, particularly in the case of FFXI. It would likely sell better if it was seen as the next game in the series.

Ultimately though, it is meaningless.

Every game past 10 has been so radically different that you can't really well define what a mainline Final Fantasy is supposed to be anymore other than that it is available on the latest hardware and using that to its full advantage.

I would have agreed back in the day, but since then Square has fucked up the franchise beyond repair and the concept of the mainline no longer matters.

I remember seeing an old clip from an event held somewhere where they announced FF 9 10 and 11 all at once. To my knowledge it was not fully filmed and only a small number of people were invited. But the moment where they reveal 3 new Final Fantasy games got recorded and you hear the audience insanely excited. But then a minute later they learn 11 is an mmo and I think there are groans heard. Even back then, there were people who hated mmos and didn't want a main FF game to be online only

I would prefer they didn't have a mainline number myself since it makes my collection appear incomplete, not that I have anything against them. It's only a mild preference however, so ultimately It's fine. I'm not as big of a fan of the action rpg turn as it is.
