Heck, look at Chuck. In the game he has Primeape and Poliwrath, so when the anime changes it up, you'd think one of those would be replaced with Hitmontop. But nope, just replace Primeape with Machoke.

Considering Gold and Silver were the second pair of games it's more like they were trying to use plenty of Pokemon from what was at the time the entire series rather than specifically liking Gen 1.

People bring this up all the time but I don't think it's good or bad. In my opinion this just speaks to the ethos of Gen 2 being more like an expansion of Gen 1. Figuratively and literally, since Johto is literally a short walk to the west of Kanto. Yes Kanto pokemon are all over Johto. And some Johto pokemon are only in Kanto. Because Johto isn't trying to be a big separate thing.

It's a thing in the later Gens more where try to individualize themselves. RSE is >95% original Gen 3 pokemon everywhere with some very small smatterings of Gen 1 and 2 pokemon. And then later Gens start to have their own huge new gameplay mechanics unique to their generation, even being dropped afterward. It's just a different ethos.

When Gold/Silver came out, there wasnt talk of "gens." It was just pokemon, and the new mons were basically seen as an expanded roster to the original 151.

Life was simpler.

I think they even realized this mistake with crystal since that game shifts around the mons a bit to make certain gen 2 ones show up sooner.

Iirc people were mad so many couldn't be caught anymore in general 3 even, like people are these days about the dex.
